About Contours in Motion Residential Apartment
Contours in Motion is a 304 square meter residential apartment interior created for a family of four in Taiwan. The open layout joins the living room, dining area and bar into one continuous space. Dual circulation paths provide several entry and exit points, so movement through the home stays flexible. Zones are defined by material changes rather than partitions, including herringbone wood flooring and a main wall of CNC processed wave pattern stone. UV resistant curtains and heat insulating window film reduce the afternoon sun.
Shi Zhe Luo's Contours in Motion Residential Apartment participates in the contemporary discourse surrounding residential interior design that seeks to reconcile the opposing demands of technological integration and material warmth, demonstrating how digital media elements can be absorbed into domestic environments without dominating the sensory or aesthetic experience of inhabitation. The design achieves compositional sophistication through its masterful deployment of a feature wall that functions simultaneously as sculptural element, textural focal point, and architectural backdrop, with the vertical fluting creating a rhythmic pattern that activates the surface while the natural veining of the marble or marble-effect material introduces organic irregularity that prevents the geometric rigor from becoming sterile or overly formal, and the designer's chromatic restraint demonstrates confidence in the expressive capacity of neutrals, building a palette of warm and cool tones that interact with particular subtlety as the cream, taupe, ivory, and soft gray of the stone-effect surfaces find counterpoint in the golden-brown wood tones and bronze-hued accent lighting, while the singular injection of saturated yellow through the fresh floral arrangement provides precisely calibrated chromatic energy without disrupting the overall tonal harmony, revealing an understanding of how accent color functions most effectively when deployed sparingly within predominantly neutral schemes. The spatial composition reflects careful attention to scale relationships and proportional balance, with the monumental feature wall providing architectural gravitas while the furniture grouping maintains human scale and domestic intimacy, and the designer's integration of technological components including the flat-screen display and audio equipment demonstrates sensitivity to the challenge of incorporating contemporary media devices into aesthetically refined environments, treating these elements not as afterthoughts but as integral components whose matte black finish and minimal profile allow them to recede visually while remaining functionally accessible, and the lighting strategy deserves particular attention for its layered approach that combines general ambient illumination with focused accent lighting, creating atmospheric depth and allowing the space to modulate between functional brightness and evening intimacy. The material palette celebrates textural diversity within chromatic restraint, juxtaposing the cool smooth expanses of stone-effect surfaces with the warmth of wood grain, the dimensional relief of fluted carving with the planarity of painted surfaces, the organic irregularity of flowering branches with the geometric precision of manufactured forms, and the matte absorption of stone finishes with the mirror-like reflection of glossy black lacquer, creating a sensory richness that rewards sustained attention and close looking while never overwhelming the eye with excessive visual complexity, and this approach suggests affinities with contemporary minimalist traditions that emphasize material honesty, detail resolution, and the expressive potential of simplified form, while also engaging with biophilic design principles through the inclusion of natural elements that connect the interior environment to seasonal cycles and organic growth. What questions about domestic sanctuary does this space invite us to consider regarding the balance between technological convenience and material warmth, between visual simplicity and sensory richness, between architectural monumentality and human-scaled intimacy?
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- This is a residence that redefines open living by balancing visual flow with clear zoning. Its advantage is the strategic use of dual circulation paths in multiple areas, which breaks traditional single route layouts and makes movement more intuitive and engaging. The design also utilizes diverse materials such as wave pattern stone and herringbone wood flooring to create a rich yet cohesive spatial language. This approach maximizes space and enhances the family's daily interactions.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This is a 304 sqm residence.

- Production Technology
- The design employs a strategic approach to layout and materials. The living and dining areas are naturally divided by a shift in floor materials while maintaining visual transparency. The living room's main wall uses CNC processed wave pattern stone to create a continuous, layered focal point without visible seams. The ceiling is outlined with a special golden paint and curved lines. In the master bedroom, the bed wall was repositioned and given a curve to create a sense of psychological enclosure, while incorporating a dual path design for improved flow.
- Design Challenge
- A key challenge was to design a large, open layout that feels unified yet clearly zoned for different functions. This was addressed by using subtle material transitions on the floor and walls to define areas without requiring physical partitions. Another challenge was managing the strong western sun exposure, which was solved with a multi layered strategy of UV protection and an efficient, concealed air conditioning system.
- Project Duration
- The project started in 2023 and finished in December 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The dual circulation path is the core interactive element, allowing users to choose their route through multiple entry and exit points, which adds a sense of choice and exploration to daily movement. The open layout connects the living room, dining area, and bar into a single fluid space for family and guests. An integrated voice controlled smart home system allows for easy adjustments to lighting and climate, enhancing the home's adaptability and user comfort.
- Research
- The project's engineering is defined by its focus on practical solutions for large spaces. To address the strong afternoon sun, the design incorporates UV resistant curtains and heat insulating window film. The concealed air conditioning system in the ceiling uses natural airflow principles for efficient cooling. The selection of high scrub resistance wall fabric ensures easy maintenance and durability in high traffic areas. These engineering choices, combined with sustainable materials like recycled Italian stone, result in a home that is both easy to maintain and environmentally responsible.
- Inspiration
- The design was motivated by the desire to create a home that is both highly functional and aesthetically pleasing for a family of four. The core idea was to transform a raw unit by using an open layout and dual circulation paths to enhance spatial efficiency and user experience. The design draws inspiration from the materials themselves, using their textures and unique properties to create distinct zones and a layered, flowing aesthetic that elevates daily living.
