About Dreams Playing Cards

Dreams is a conceptual deck of playing cards that explores the relationship between architecture and art through visual narratives. Each card presents a creative figure and shows how imagination moves across disciplines. The deck is intended for play, learning and display. The first edition features Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali, combining modernist architecture with surrealist art. The 52 cards are offset printed on 300 gsm carbon core paper and individually die cut. The box is made of rigid cardboard wrapped in textured paper.

Dreams Playing Cards by Studioefs exemplifies contemporary graphic design's capacity to elevate everyday functional objects into vehicles for aesthetic contemplation and emotional resonance, situating itself within a rich tradition of illustrated playing card design that extends from medieval tarot's symbolic complexity through Art Nouveau's organic ornamentation to twentieth-century modernism's geometric reduction, yet the work distinguishes itself through its particular synthesis of minimalist linear economy and intimate figurative subject matter that transforms the conventional card deck into a meditation on rest, imagination, and the vulnerable creative states accessed through sleep. The packaging design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of modular identity systems and chromatic restraint, employing a deliberately limited palette of warm earth tones, cool neutrals, and a single punctuating accent hue to create visual coherence across multiple format variations while allowing sufficient differentiation to suggest collection-building potential, the dual colorway strategy of dusty terracotta and soft putty providing tonal variety without chromatic disruption, each box surface treated as a compositional field where sans-serif typography and figurative vignettes achieve balanced coexistence through careful scale calibration and spatial distribution. The illustrative approach reveals accomplished command of continuous-line drawing technique, a demanding method requiring the artist to construct complete figures without lifting the drawing implement, resulting in fluid contours that capture essential anatomical structure and postural character through economical means, the recumbent and contemplative poses suggesting dream states, creative reverie, or restful surrender, each figure reading as universal rather than particularized, their reduced features and simplified forms inviting projection and identification across diverse viewer populations. The selective introduction of vermillion accents functions as both compositional punctuation and symbolic elaboration, these crimson elements appearing as hearts, blossoms, or abstract flourishes that inject moments of chromatic vitality into the otherwise achromatic linear field while potentially encoding meanings associated with love, passion, life force, or emotional interiority, their strategic placement creating rhythmic visual accents that guide eye movement across the card faces and box surfaces while suggesting narrative or thematic connections between disparate figurative elements. The photographic presentation itself merits attention for its atmospheric depth construction and material fidelity, the high-angle diagonal arrangement creating dynamic spatial recession that invites the viewer's gaze to travel across multiple packaging examples while the central partially-opened box serves as narrative anchor, its exposed contents promising tactile interaction and revealing the systematic graphic language applied across individual card faces, the whole composition elevated from mere product documentation into considered still-life arrangement through attention to surface variety, shadow transparency, and tonal modulation across the supporting textile ground. Technical execution evidences professional facility across multiple design domains including illustration, typography, structural packaging design, and brand identity development, the unified visual system suggesting coherent creative vision rather than assembled components, each formal decision reinforcing thematic concerns with rest, dreams, imagination, and the transformative potential of everyday rituals like card games or solitary reflection. How might the deliberate pairing of quotidian gaming object and contemplative figurative content invite reconsideration of leisure activities as opportunities for imaginative engagement rather than mere entertainment, and what personal associations or memories of restful moments might these economical sleeping figures and crimson hearts activate in individual viewers encountering this thoughtfully designed deck?

Production Technology
The cards are printed on 300 gsm carbon core playing card paper by Koehler, a premium German brand known for its high opacity and durability. This material is commonly used in professional grade decks for its flexibility and non transparency. Produced using offset printing, each card is individually die cut. The box is made from rigid cardboard and wrapped in custom designed textured paper for a refined finish.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was to create a concept that contributes to collective memory through design. I observed short attention spans and explored learning through play for adults. Another challenge was curating iconic figures with strong contrasts like modern architecture and surrealism. Ensuring long-lasting paper quality was also critical. These very challenges ultimately defined the project’s originality.
Project Duration
The project began in November 2024 in Izmir, Turkey, and was launched for sale in April 2025. It combines architects and artists with collectible design to create an interactive and educational experience.
Operation Flow
The Dreams Playing Cards deck is designed for both intellectual and tactile engagement. Users interact with the deck card by card, discovering characters that bridge art and architecture. The experience encourages users to reflect on each card's symbolism, engage in conversations, and learn through play. The cards foster deeper exploration of cultural memory and creative imagination, turning the act of learning into an interactive, shareable, and enjoyable experience.
Research
The research began with imagining the artists and architects of the Bauhaus era as friends, even though they did not live in the same period. Based on the principles of art, craft, and architecture from that time, the process involved exploring their most significant projects and symbols from their lives through collage techniques. This approach helped us understand their creative processes and shape the design of Dreams Playing Cards.
Inspiration
Dreams Playing Cards was born from a desire to make the memory of architecture and art more accessible and interactive. The project aims to build a contrasting dialogue between the rational minds of architects like Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, and the surreal visions of artists like Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte placing the transformative power of imagination at its core. It offers a collectible experience where thought turns into play and visual narrative.
