About Eclipse Residential Interior

Eclipse is a residential interior design for a private home of about 115 square meters in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The layout follows a sun and moon concept. Soft warm lighting and flowing curves reduce the visual impact of the structural columns. Engineered wood veneer, faux stone panels, mineral-based coatings and custom metal finishes are combined with hidden doors and fine linear detailing. Public and private zones are arranged for smooth movement. The result is a layered and modern space shaped around family life.

Chen Yu Chiu's Eclipse Residential Interior exemplifies the sophisticated evolution of contemporary residential design where material restraint and spatial layering converge to produce environments of contemplative richness, this project appears to draw upon multiple design lineages including the Scandinavian tradition of materiality and light, Japanese spatial philosophy emphasizing threshold and transition, and the geometric rigor characteristic of mid-century modernist discipline, synthesizing these influences into a cohesive domestic realm that feels simultaneously grounded in craft tradition and oriented toward contemporary life. The compositional achievement of this interior resides substantially in its mastery of axial organization and perspectival choreography, the designer has orchestrated a powerful one-point perspective that draws the eye through sequential spatial zones, each threshold marked by subtle material and luminous shifts that articulate functional differentiation while maintaining experiential continuity, the overhead timber ceiling plane functions as unifying datum connecting foreground living zone to background dining area, establishing a warm horizontal counterpoint to the vertical wall planes and creating an enveloping sense of shelter characteristic of residential intimacy at its most refined. Chromatic sophistication manifests through a disciplined palette anchored in natural material expression, the honeyed amber of book-matched timber veneer introduces organic warmth and linear rhythm overhead, while the cool gray-taupe of polished plaster or microcement walls provides neutral ground that neither competes nor recedes, instead offering a subtle atmospheric presence that allows furnishings and inhabitant activity to claim visual primacy, darker charcoal and near-black elements including the honed stone wall cladding and minimal furniture silhouettes introduce grounding weight and chromatic depth without heaviness, the overall effect suggesting restrained luxury where quality of surface finish and precision of detail execution communicate value more eloquently than decorative elaboration ever could. The lighting design demonstrates particular accomplishment, revealing a layered strategy where concealed ambient sources wash the timber ceiling creating overall luminous warmth, recessed linear slots provide functional task illumination with crisp directionality, and subtle perimeter cove lighting lifts wall surfaces dissolving corners and expanding perceived volume, this tripartite approach produces spatial modeling through graduated brightness rather than dramatic contrast, supporting the contemplative atmosphere while ensuring functional adequacy for domestic inhabitation. Thematically, Eclipse Residential Interior appears to explore the possibility of creating domestic sanctuary within contemporary urban contexts, spaces that honor quietude and material authenticity as antidotes to visual overstimulation and surface superficiality, the design seems to propose that meaningful dwelling emerges through thoughtful curation of material, proportion, and light rather than through accumulation of objects or decorative gesture. The sequential spatial organization with its framed vistas and layered thresholds evokes traditional courtyard house typologies where progression through space involves rhythmic alternation between compression and release, privacy and revelation, this spatial narrative embedded in the architecture itself suggests ritual dimension to daily movement, transforming mundane domestic circulation into choreographed experience worthy of mindful attention. One observes potential visual kinship with the minimalist material explorations of John Pawson, the tectonic precision of Peter Zumthor's domestic interiors, and the spatial fluidity characteristic of traditional Japanese residential architecture, though the work synthesizes rather than merely references these precedents, creating spatial identity distinct and appropriate to its own context and program. The viewer encountering this space through photographic documentation might consider how contemporary residential design increasingly functions as counterbalance to accelerated digital life, offering physical environments that slow perception, reward sustained attention, and ground experience in tactile materiality and calibrated luminosity, how might such spaces reshape daily habits and attentional patterns for those who dwell within them, and what cultural values regarding domesticity, privacy, simplicity, and material authenticity find architectural expression in projects like Eclipse Residential Interior?

Production Technology
Our design was realized through precise integration of structural elements, where techniques like repositioning the daughter's room door minimized column intrusion and maintained uninterrupted sight lines. Advanced production methods were employed using engineered wood veneer, faux stone panels, mineral-based coatings, and custom metal finishes. Meticulous craftsmanship and innovative material junctions ensured both aesthetic refinement and sustainability.
Design Challenge
The toughest challenge was balancing deep familial narratives with modern structural demands. Integrating historical and social influences while meeting strict building codes, limited material options, and production constraints required extensive research and innovative problem-solving. This iterative process ensured the design maintained artistic integrity and addressed all external and internal factors.
Project Duration
The project commenced in November 2022 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan and was completed in March 2023, spanning a four‐month period. Executed at a private urban residence, this design reflects a collaborative effort that seamlessly integrates technical innovation with aesthetic refinement, capturing the essence of contemporary residential living.
Operation Flow
The design creates a natural, intuitive flow throughout the home. Hidden doors and open pathways guide residents smoothly between communal spaces and private areas. Key moments, like transitioning from the living room to a secluded retreat, are highlighted by soft lighting and unobstructed views. This thoughtful layout encourages casual interaction and a sense of continuity, making everyday living more comfortable and engaging.
Inspiration
Inspired by deep familial bonds and the gentle interplay of light, this project harnesses the symbolism of a rising moon and steadfast sun. It fuses tender emotion with resilient strength, using natural light, soft curves, and refined textures to evoke warmth and balance. Every element is chosen to express personal sentiment and technical innovation, creating an environment that resonates with modern elegance and heartfelt inspiration. Additionally, precise detailing reflects sustainability.
