About Embrace The Poetry Of Self Apparel

Embrace the Poetry of Self is a womenswear collection based on the dress. The structure of a traditional men's shirt is embedded into a feminine dress, and three dimensional cutting is used to merge the two forms. Clothing structures are deconstructed and reshaped to blur the boundaries between gendered garments. The result is one garment that can be worn in several ways. Function and appearance are combined in a single piece. The collection reflects on female identity and on the spatial relationship between clothing and the body.

Ji Yibo's Embrace The Poetry Of Self Apparel emerges from contemporary fashion design's ongoing interrogation of garment as sculptural medium and personal expression as choreographed gesture, situating itself within a lineage of conceptual apparel that privileges architectural form and material investigation over decorative embellishment. The work demonstrates sophisticated technical command in its construction methodology, employing what appears to be pattern-making strategies that embrace controlled asymmetry and deliberate volume manipulation, visible in the upper garment's complex origami-like folding at the chest and the cascading panel extensions that activate space beyond the body's core silhouette. The halter construction with its wrapped collar and posterior bow detail suggests both traditional Eastern garment-tying conventions and contemporary experimental pattern-cutting techniques, creating a hybrid vocabulary that honors craft heritage while advancing formal innovation. The chromatic restraint, operating almost exclusively within the achromatic spectrum of white, black, and grey, focuses interpretive attention entirely on form, proportion, and the play of light across textile topography rather than dispersing visual energy through chromatic variety, a choice that aligns the work with minimalist design philosophy and demonstrates confidence in the sufficiency of structure as primary expressive vehicle. The dramatic pose, with its pronounced backward extension of the head and neck, transforms what might be conventional fashion documentation into something more psychologically resonant, suggesting themes of aspiration, release, vulnerability, ecstasy, or transcendence, the closed or upward-cast eyes removing the confrontational directness of camera-meeting gaze and instead proposing interior experience, private reverie, or spiritual elevation. The belt's slender horizontal intervention at the natural waist serves both practical anchoring function and symbolic division, marking the transition between the light-animated sculptural complexity above and the grounded, absorptive simplicity below, creating a compositional hinge that organizes the visual field into distinct but related territories. The work invites contemplation of how garments participate in identity construction and self-presentation, how fabric draped upon the body becomes extension of personal expression, how the designed object mediates between private self and public visibility, and how fashion design at its most thoughtful operates as wearable poetry, translating interior states into material form. One might consider how the stark chromatic division between white and black engages archetypal dualities, light and shadow, conscious and unconscious, structure and void, containment and freedom, and how the figure's gesture of opening, extending, offering upward suggests the garment itself as vehicle for transformation or revelation of essential self beneath social costume.

Production Technology
In terms of structure design, the transformation and fusion of the garment's three-dimensional structure change its functionality. By embedding the structure of a traditional men's shirt into a feminine dress, the designer employed three-dimensional cutting to enhance its integration, making it versatile and practical, offering "one garment with multiple styles." At the same time, the functional and aesthetic qualities of the clothing merge seamlessly, providing women with a broader range of styling possibilities.
Design Challenge
Balancing fit and comfort can be challenging, as different body types have varying needs. Choosing fabrics that meet aesthetic, comfort, and functionality requirements is essential. Cost control is another difficulty, as high-quality materials and intricate craftsmanship can increase expenses. Additionally, the complexity of designs may affect production efficiency. Rapid changes in market trends require quick responses to keep up with fashion. Sustainability poses challenges as eco-friendly materials and processes often come with higher costs and limited technology. These difficulties demand that designers find the best balance between creativity, aesthetics, technology, and market demands.
Project Duration
The project started in September 2016 in Nanjing and finished in September 2017 in Nanjing, exhibiting in Nanjing University of the Arts.

Research
Ergonomic analysis to optimize fit and comfort; material technology research to select breathable, waterproof, and antibacterial functional fabrics; fashion trend analysis to integrate market demands with stylish elements; craftsmanship and structural optimization to enhance tailoring techniques and durability; eco-friendly and sustainable design using recycled materials and environmentally friendly processes; and smart wearable technology with features such as temperature control and health monitoring. These research approaches ensure that clothing achieves the best balance of comfort, functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.
Inspiration
The Embrace the Poetry of Self collection is inspired by a profound reflection on female identity and the spatial structure of the body. As a staple in women's daily wardrobes, the dress symbolizes both fashion and femininity.
