About The Shape of Old Memory Womenswear Collection
The creation of this series of works comes from the designer’s thinking on the innovative application of traditional craft culture in contemporary design and its innovative application value. Traditional craft culture is like a treasure sunk in the deep sea. People can perceive its existence and value but rarely touch it. If it is not salvaged, it will fade away and disappear, which is regrettable. Another innovation in this work is the use of epoxy resin AB glue, it can help the work maintain its good shape like sculpture, and, pay an important role in decoration.
Chen Bingrou's The Shape of Old Memory Womenswear Collection emerges from a rich tradition of textile arts that honor ancestral craft while embracing contemporary sculptural innovation, positioning itself at the intersection of fashion design, wearable art, and cultural heritage preservation. The collection demonstrates exceptional technical mastery in the manipulation of organza, a fabric notoriously challenging to control yet here coaxed into voluminous three-dimensional forms that appear simultaneously architectural and organic, suggesting both constructed shelter and natural growth. The designer's chromatic sensibility reveals sophisticated understanding of how layered transparencies create optical depth, as base tones of warm white interact with applied washes of aqua and turquoise to generate color experiences impossible to achieve through opaque materials alone. Embroidered motifs rendered in gold and earth tones introduce linear counterpoint to the billowing surfaces, their stylized organic forms evoking traditional decorative vocabularies while maintaining contemporary abstraction. The garment's relationship to the body proves equally considered, with the dramatic shoulder construction framing rather than obscuring the wearer, creating visual dialogue between human form and textile architecture. This interplay between revelation and concealment, between body and garment, between tradition and innovation, invites contemplation of how clothing functions as mediator between inner self and outer presentation, between personal memory and collective cultural inheritance. The presentation itself, featuring restrained styling and the model's introspective demeanor, suggests the collection addresses themes of remembrance, transformation, and the persistence of beauty across time. - The innovation of this design is mainly reflected in the application of special materials, the design of apparel structure and the innovative application of traditional Chinese Chaozhou embroidery pattern. The addition of epoxy resin AB glue makes the modeling of this series of clothes become stable like sculpture, more tension, but also more expressive. The application of traditional Chaozhou embroidery pattern makes the works more vibrant.

- Production Technology
- The main technology of this series of works is the application of Epoxy resin AB adhesive. On the one hand, the material used in the edge of clothing cut can play an effective role in shaping and supporting, on the other hand, the material can also better fix other decorative materials on the clothing, has a good decorative effect.
- Design Challenge
- There are two main challenges in the creation process of this series of works. One is about the application of epoxy resin AB glue in costume, and the other is about the application of traditional Chinese Chaozhou embroidery craft culture in this work. In this series, I did not really apply embroidery techniques, but used metal bead chains to represent the extracted embroidery patterns. What I want to discuss is the new possibilities of traditional craft culture in contemporary design.
- Project Duration
- The project started in September 2021 in Guangzhou and finished in May 2022 in Guangzhou, and was exhibited in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in June 2022.
- Operation Flow
- This work is not only wearable clothing, but also can be regarded as decorative sculpture. Because of the application of epoxy resin AB glue in the work, the work can maintain a relatively beautiful shape stably even without the support of human body, and has good ornamental value.
- Research
- This work focuses on the innovative application of new materials and traditional Chinese craft culture in fashion design. Its materials such as epoxy resin AB glue and metal bead chain that I used are relatively rare in the field of fashion design. Their addition not only well decorates the design, but also plays a good shaping role, making the costume more tense
In addition, the patterns in this work are all based on the Chinese traditional Chaozhou embroidery craft works. - Inspiration
- The creation of this series of works comes from the my thinking on the innovative application of traditional craft culture in contemporary design and its innovative application value.
