About Essence of Space Residential Interior
Essence of Space is a residential interior design completed in Taipei, Taiwan. The apartment covers 58 square meters and contains a living area, a dining area, a kitchen, a study and guest room, a master bedroom and a bathroom. An open floor plan allows natural light from one side to reach far into the home. Sliding and folding doors let each area be closed off or joined with the rest. Double glazing reduces noise and helps control temperature. Built-in wooden cabinets and metal racks are fixed to bearing walls for safety.
Studio One's Essence of Space Residential Interior emerges from the confluence of Scandinavian spatial restraint and Japanese material sensitivity, positioning itself within contemporary minimalist residential design traditions that privilege quietude, material authenticity, and carefully calibrated proportion over decorative elaboration or stylistic gesture. The work engages meaningfully with the legacy of mid-century modernism, particularly the material explorations of Mies van der Rohe and the Copenhagen School's democratic elegance, while incorporating the contemplative spatial philosophy evident in Tadao Ando's concrete meditations and the phenomenological richness John Pawson achieves through material reduction. The compositional achievement rests fundamentally in the sophisticated orchestration of horizontal and vertical elements establishing a tranquil geometric order, the full-height charcoal cabinetry providing visual grounding and generous concealed storage while maintaining surface serenity, and the suspended credenza creating a floating horizontal datum that emphasizes the room's lateral extension while providing functional workspace without visual heaviness. The chromatic accomplishment lies in the nuanced calibration of achromatic values, the deep charcoal reading as substantial and enveloping without oppressive weight, the warm oak providing essential thermal balance preventing clinical coldness, and the pale flooring establishing luminous openness that amplifies natural light and enhances spatial generosity. Technical facility manifests in the precision joinery evident in cabinet panel alignment, the seamless integration of media technology within the cabinetry without compromising surface continuity, the sophisticated lighting design layering ambient, task, and accent illumination to support varied activities and atmospheric moods, and the material transitions executed with crisp definition suggesting meticulous detailing and construction quality. The floating credenza passage represents particular accomplishment, the cantilevered element appearing weightless while providing substantial surface area, its speckled terrazzo or composite surface offering textural counterpoint to the surrounding smooth planes while suggesting durability and tactile interest. Thematically, the space invites contemplation of contemporary domesticity reimagined through material essentialism and spatial generosity, suggesting that luxury resides not in decorative accumulation but in spatial quality, material authenticity, and the thoughtful orchestration of light, surface, and proportion. The work explores the productive tension between concealment and revelation, the extensive closed storage allowing daily life's necessary objects to disappear behind uniform surfaces while the open credenza and exposed oak joinery celebrate selective display and material beauty. The composition seems to meditate on horizontal repose and grounded calm, the strong lateral emphasis and low furniture suggesting rest, stability, and intimate human scale rather than vertical aspiration or monumental grandeur. One might observe how the warm oak elements function as gentle interventions preventing the space from becoming austere, their natural grain and honey tones suggesting organic warmth and temporal patina within the otherwise precisely controlled material palette. How does this careful balance between restraint and warmth, concealment and display, geometric order and material softness, create conditions for both social gathering and solitary contemplation, and what might such spatial generosity and material honesty suggest about contemporary values regarding domestic life, essential possession, and the cultivation of daily tranquility?

- Unique Properties
- For design strategies, Studio One adapts the open floor plan to overcame the disadvantage of only one-side natural lights form the space, while applying double-glazing for sound isolation and temperature control form its urban environment. Studio One creates a non-hinderance flow towards space, yet each area could be isolated from each other with flexible sliding/folding doors. The possibilities of the space were based on its flexibilities.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The area of this project is 58sq. m2, which contains living area, dining area, kitchen, study/guest room, master bedroom and bathroom. The space could be separated as an independent zone yet could be also integrated as one open floor plan without solid boundaries.

- Production Technology
- As the project was located in a very urban area, in order to isolate the private house from its busy environment, Studio One applied the double-glazing for sound and heat insulation but maintain the possibility to gain the natural light as much as possible. With the concern often occurs in Taiwan and the age of the house, designer analysis the bearing wall/beam system and design the partition wall to reenforce the existing structure. Built-in wooden structural cabinets and metal rack were all installed onto bearing wall and structure ceiling in order to achieve safe aspect for the interior.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge was to maximizing the limited interior space with more possibilities and flexibilities. How the space or zones were defined without setting up a clear or solid boundaries is the key design objective towards this project. An open plan was introduced to the case in order to achieve the design goal while also allowing natural lights travel as much as it could within the space. As the selection of construction material and structural reinforcement were all designed to solve the existing environment disadvantage and ensure the interior space equipped the strength to withstand the earthquake.
- Project Duration
- The project was completed in Taipei, Taiwan in 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The project is located at a busy urban area with only one side of natural light. As Studio One first approached the case, design goal was to absorb as much as natural lights for the space and isolate the interior from its busy environment. Hence, Studio One adopts the open floor plan to allow one-side natural lights travel as far as it could be while applying double-glazing for sound isolation and temperature control. Studio One creates a non-hinderance flow for the space, yet each area could be isolated from each other with flexible sliding/folding doors. The possibilities of the space were based on its flexibilities. The form of the space could be easily shaped based on client's space demands.
- Research
- a) Relationships between exterior and interior-
The very fundamental problem for designer was to solve the relationship between exterior and interior since the project is located in a populated area on surface floor. Designer applied window wall with adjustable shades to absorb natural light for the space, yet also applied double wall and glazing for sound isolation and temperature control. The privacy and calmness were obtained due to the thoughtful material research and selection.
b) Space form follows function-
In this limited space, designer applied open plan to maximize the possibility and flexibilities for the interior, yet the contour of the space could be re-shaped easily based on client’s space demands. The boundaries between zones could be solid or blur. - Inspiration
- The inspiration was derived from the concept of module system. Each area in the space were seen as an isolate cube, as the cubes re-arranged based on client’s life behavior or space demands, the space could be easily shifted into different contour. Lots of functional design elements such as sliding/folding doors and hardware were introduced for the project. A limited space yet with great possibilities were the core principle for the project. The essence of space, was shown on its diversities.
