About Fengqi Chang’an Aesthetics Museum Exhibition Hall

Fengqi Chang'an Aesthetics Museum is an exhibition building in Chang'an, China. The design is inspired by nature, traditional Chinese gardens and landscape paintings. Functional volumes of different sizes are combined with courtyards and verandas to form a continuous and flexible garden space. Each courtyard serves a purpose, such as display, communication, meditation or activities, and crisscrossed corridors link them. Glass surfaces, wide door leaves and large overhanging eaves create an orderly frame. The building covers 6,400 square meters on a 16,000 square meter site.

Within the discourse of contemporary architecture that seeks meaningful dialogue with traditional building cultures, GOA (Group of Architects)'s Fengqi Chang'an Aesthetics Museum Exhibition Hall emerges as a thoughtful meditation on the relationship between heritage forms and modern spatial experience, the design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how vernacular architectural elements including sweeping roof profiles, timber screens, and courtyard water features can be reinterpreted through contemporary construction methodologies while retaining their essential poetic and functional qualities, the rendering captured during a rain shower reveals the architects' deliberate engagement with atmospheric conditions as active participants in the spatial experience rather than elements to be merely excluded, the composition of interconnected pavilions arranged around a central reflecting pool establishes a processional sequence that recalls the layered thresholds of traditional compound architecture while the generous glazing and illuminated interiors suggest contemporary transparency and openness to community gathering, the material palette demonstrates restraint and consistency with warm timber screens providing visual warmth and textural richness against the cooler tones of metal roofing and stone paving, the integration of a mature tree within the water court speaks to a biophilic design sensibility that honors the presence of nature within architectural intervention, particularly notable is the treatment of the roof forms which achieve a delicate balance between historical reference and contemporary expression through their gently curved profiles executed in standing seam metal, the overall effect suggests a place of cultural contemplation where visitors might experience both the achievements of human craft and the gentle drama of natural phenomena, one is invited to consider how architecture might serve as a threshold between the bustle of contemporary life and spaces of reflection and aesthetic appreciation.
