About Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel

Muh Shoou Xixi is a hotel set within the Xixi Wetland. The hotel is renovated from five old buildings that stood on the site. The structural transformation was made with minimal intervention, so the buildings connect smoothly with the surrounding forest and water system. Trees with a trunk diameter of 10 centimeters or more were recorded by species, name and root level, and the layout follows the original vegetation, mainly persimmon trees. A banquet hall of 300 square meters is enclosed by windows on three sides. A water route based on the original landform allows arrival by boat.

Drawing upon traditions of landscape-integrated hospitality architecture that honor the profound dialogue between built form and natural environment, Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel by GOA (Group of Architects) presents a compelling vision of contemporary resort design that achieves remarkable synthesis between vernacular architectural language and modernist spatial clarity. The work demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to site conditions, with the architectural ensemble positioned to embrace rather than dominate its wetland setting, creating a symbiotic relationship where building and landscape appear to have evolved together organically over time. The compositional achievement lies in the sophisticated articulation of multiple interconnected pavilion structures unified through consistent material expression and roof geometry, generating visual coherence while maintaining spatial variety and programmatic flexibility characteristic of refined hospitality environments. The chromatic restraint evident in the neutral gray roofscape allows the architecture to assume a quietly dignified presence within the verdant context, neither competing with nor disappearing into the surrounding landscape but rather establishing a measured dialogue of complement and contrast. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precise roof detailing, where traditional pitched forms receive contemporary reinterpretation through clean edges, minimal ornament, and sophisticated material selection that suggests both regional heritage and international design discourse. The integration of water elements and preserved forest establishes biophilic principles at the master planning scale, inviting contemplation of architecture's capacity to enhance rather than diminish natural beauty while providing the comfort and amenity expected of luxury hospitality. One might observe how the elevated perspective reveals the careful choreography of circulation paths that connect pavilions while creating opportunities for discovery and contemplation, suggesting the architects' attention to experiential journey as much as formal composition.

Unique Properties
The project boasts typical wetland ecology with water path, land route as well as native vegetation surrounding.
There are many kinds of plants surrounding the hotel, most of them are persimmon trees, among which the oldest tree is 100-year-old. The building team recorded root elevation, species and names of all trees with DBH of 10 cm one by one, and "weaved" the building into the environment so as to adapt to the layout of the original vegetation.

Production Technology
The banquet hall with plentiful lights is surrounded by 270 ° French window, and its indoor space covering an area of 300 ㎡ seamless blend with outdoor natural forests, lawns and waterside terrace. It would be a unique experience to hold a banquet, clothing show, auto show or any other activities in a such a forest-like place.

The design of water route is based on the original land-form of the wetland, enabling people who are accustomed to land transporting to travel along the ancient waterway to the hotel. In the water waves stirred by the oars, people could appreciate the beauty of Xixi Wetland from a different perspective.
Design Challenge
The hotel is renovated from five old buildings originally on this site. The challenge to architects is how to meet the needs of modern hotels in an ecologically optimal way. After making a large number of on-site investigations, architects completed the structural transformation and integrated system layout with extremely minimal intervention, so that the building could be connected with surrounding forest and water system smoothly.
Project Duration
The project started design in 2015 and finished in 2018.
Operation Flow
The architect attempts to present the natural beauty of Xixi Wetland - coldness, quietness, uniqueness, wildness and seclusion - to visitors through the design and evoke the resonance between human and the primitive nature through the architecture.

Inspiration
Muh Shoou Xixi originally means the last fruit left by farmers on the tree with the special intention of sharing it with animals in nature so as to pray for the harvest of the coming year. That's just where the name of Muh Shoou Xixi comes. The architect attempts to present the natural beauty of Xixi Wetland - coldness, quietness, uniqueness, wildness and seclusion - to visitors through the design and evoke the resonance between human and the primitive nature through the architecture.
