About Flowing Diffusion Residence
Flowing Diffusion is a residential interior for an apartment of 462.8 square meters. The living and dining areas share an open plan that expands the sense of space and hosts more guests. A curved ceiling of metal and translucent panels joins the two areas, and the lighting changes color to suit different occasions. A wavy titanium coated metal facade lines the walkway. Titanium coated metal, metallic paint and large tiles are used throughout. Separate bedrooms on opposite sides of the social area reduce disturbance between family members.
Chien-Chien Peng's Flowing Diffusion Residence exemplifies a remarkable synthesis of organic architectural expression and contemporary residential refinement, positioning itself within the evolving tradition of biomorphic design that traces lineages through the curved geometries of mid-century modernism to the computational fluidity of twenty-first-century parametric practice. The work's most distinctive achievement resides in its extraordinary ceiling treatment, where an intricate network of curvilinear structural members frames softly illuminated panels that suggest the venation patterns of leaves, the cellular organization of living tissue, or the gentle branching of natural waterways, thus bringing the language of organic growth into dialogue with precise architectural craft. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of this sculptural overhead plane with the practical requirements of residential living, where functional lighting, spatial definition, and aesthetic ambition merge without apparent compromise. The material palette demonstrates remarkable chromatic sensitivity, balancing the warmth of richly hued leather upholstery against cool stone surfaces and the neutral luminosity of the ceiling plane, creating an environment that feels simultaneously dramatic and deeply habitable. The designer appears to engage with themes of shelter and sanctuary, proposing that contemporary dwelling might embrace expressive architectural gesture while maintaining the comfort and ease essential to domestic life. One might consider how the ceiling's organic forms suggest a protective canopy, perhaps evoking primordial memories of forest cover or the sheltering embrace of natural formations, thus connecting modern inhabitants to ancient human experiences of dwelling beneath living structures. The interplay between the fluid ceiling and the geometric precision of the furniture arrangement invites contemplation of the productive tension between nature and culture, between organic emergence and human intention, that animates much contemporary design discourse. Viewers are encouraged to consider how architectural surfaces might transcend mere functional enclosure to become expressive elements that shape emotional experience and spatial memory.

- Unique Properties
- Creating Magic with Brilliant Lighting: The social area features a ceiling of curved metal and translucent panels, seamlessly integrating the living and dining spaces. The lighting changes colors to suit different occasions, and the 'side-emitting' metal emits a subtle glow, enhancing textures and hues.
Metal Facade Creating Aesthetics: The titanium-coated metal facade, inspired by the building's exterior, has gracefully curved edges, balancing strength and softness. Positioned in the walkway, it offers a view reminiscent of prestigious artwork, becoming a memorable highlight of the home. - Dimensions & Packaging
- The apartment has a total area of 462.8 square meters. The living and dining areas are designed in an open-plan layout to enhance the sense of space. Due to differing family schedules and the growing age of the child, the designer positioned the master bedroom and the daughter's room on opposite sides of the social area. The inclusion of two master bedrooms provides the male and female owners with their own private retreat spaces. This clear delineation of private zones and layouts reduces potential disturbances between family members.

- Production Technology
- Materials: Titanium-coated metal, metallic paint, Italian tiles, large tiles, etc. The ceiling and walls extensively use metal materials, including titanium-coated metal and metallic paint. The designer transcended conventional constraints, infusing a novel and luxurious atmosphere. The dining table top, wall-mounted cabinets, and master bedroom door panels feature tiles selected by the owner, with abstract patterns that impart a distinct personal style to the space. The flooring in the social area is covered with large tiles to minimize seams and avoid segmented lines.
- Design Challenge
- The curved and layered ceiling in the social area posed the most challenging aspect. The designer employed titanium-like metallic paint to minimize unsightly seams. Translucent panels replaced silicone light strips, allowing the saturated light to evenly illuminate the metallic paint, achieving the most ideal visual effect. The wavy titanium-coated metal in the walkway also required considerable effort. Due to the sensitivity of titanium coatings to angular transitions, creating a facade with consistent gleaming quality tested the skills and craftsmanship of the metalworkers.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in December 2023 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The design that integrates the living and dining areas meets the client's social needs while also providing more opportunities for family interaction. To accommodate the family's shared interest in reading, the designer planned a spacious study with a 5-meter-long desk. The private areas are thoughtfully designed with a focus on independence and privacy, ensuring that everyone has their own space to enjoy solitude. The project delineates the boundaries between social and private areas, creating an ideal blueprint for a harmonious and fulfilling lifestyle.
- Research
- The open-plan social area seamlessly integrates the living and dining rooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass sliding doors enhance natural light, while metallic curved forms and dynamic lighting create a striking visual. The designer incorporated the client's preferences, crafting a unique and innovative image for the home, pushing beyond conventional boundaries. The family of four enjoys four separate bedrooms, with warm wooden tones creating a soothing ambiance. The bright study area, centered around a love for reading, offers a space for discussions and shared moments.
- Inspiration
- The client, who works in the tech industry, desires a home centered around metal and geometric elements. The continuity and inclusiveness of the lines shape a distinctive image, creating a unique home style that is difficult to replicate. Given the frequent gatherings during holidays and special occasions, the open plan connects the living and dining areas, increasing the capacity to accommodate guests while simultaneously expanding the sense of space to meet the residents' needs.
