About Fragments Sustainable Decorative Objects
Fragmentos is a collection of sustainable decorative objects crafted from upcycled marble that would otherwise be discarded. Each piece (vases, candlesticks, and a side table) follows a circular design approach, where the core of one element becomes the raw material for another. This innovative process maximizes material efficiency while preserving the natural beauty of marble. The result is a timeless collection that blends contemporary aesthetics with responsible craftsmanship, transforming remnants into sculptural works of art.
Ariane Cristina da Rosa's Fragments Sustainable Decorative Objects engages with enduring design traditions that celebrate geometric clarity, material transformation, and environmental stewardship through the creation of functional sculptural vessels that honor both modernist formal vocabularies and contemporary ecological imperatives. Working within craft traditions that extend from early 20th-century design reform movements through mid-century Scandinavian functionalism to present-day sustainable design practices, this collection demonstrates how fundamental geometric principles and disciplined chromatic restraint can produce objects of both visual refinement and conceptual depth. The compositional sophistication evident in the work reveals itself through multiple formal strategies: the mathematical precision of the alternating horizontal bands that wrap each cylindrical and conical form creates optical rhythm and visual unity across diverse vessel typologies, while the asymmetrical arrangement of varying heights, diameters, and proportions establishes dynamic equilibrium rather than static symmetry. The strictly limited palette of pure white and deep black set against warm neutral grounds achieves maximum visual impact through chromatic economy, the high contrast between adjacent bands producing crisp optical vibration at boundaries while the overall monochromatic discipline allows form and proportion to command primary attention. Surface treatment appears uniformly refined with smooth glazed or coated finishes that catch ambient and candlelight gently, the satin sheen suggesting careful material selection and technical proficiency in application methods that achieve seamless coverage and precise stripe delineation. The central vessel form particularly rewards close examination, its generous proportions and classical silhouette suggesting historical ceramic traditions transformed through contemporary patterning strategies, while its function as platform for the shallow dish and twin candles elevates purely decorative potential into participatory ritual object capable of creating ambient warmth and gentle illumination. Thematically, these works invite consideration of several resonant territories: the transformation of discarded or waste materials into objects of beauty and utility speaks to broader cultural conversations surrounding circular economy principles, material recovery, and design's capacity to confer value and dignity upon overlooked resources. The geometric severity and modernist formal vocabulary suggest that environmental responsibility need not compromise aesthetic ambition or visual sophistication, but rather can serve as creative constraint that focuses attention on essential relationships between form, material, and surface. The presence of functional candlelight introduces temporal and experiential dimensions beyond static visual contemplation, as the warm glow animates the cool geometric surfaces and transforms these objects from inert decorative elements into active participants in domestic ritual and atmospheric creation. The collection seems to propose that sustainable design practices can produce work of genuine formal accomplishment and emotional resonance, that material innovation and ecological consciousness can align with rigorous aesthetic standards inherited from modernist design traditions, and that objects crafted with attention to both environmental impact and visual refinement might contribute to more thoughtful, intentional, and appreciative relationships between people and the things that populate their daily environments. One might contemplate how these vessels negotiate the productive tension between sculptural autonomy and functional utility, between the cool rationalism of geometric abstraction and the warm intimacy of candlelight, between historical design vocabularies and contemporary material innovations, inviting viewers to consider what values, priorities, and aesthetic commitments sustainable design might embody as it shapes the visual and material culture of domestic space.

- Production Technology
- Fragments is crafted using advanced stone-cutting techniques combined with traditional craftsmanship. Each piece is extracted from the core of another, utilizing precision CNC machining to maximize material efficiency. The finishing process includes hand-polishing and sealing to enhance durability while preserving the natural beauty of the marble. This innovative method ensures zero waste, transforming discarded stone into elegant, sustainable design objects.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge was transforming discarded marble into a cohesive collection without generating additional waste. The nested design required precise CNC cutting to ensure each piece emerged from the core of another, demanding extensive material studies and prototyping. Balancing sustainability with high-end aesthetics was also crucial, proving that circular design can align with luxury without compromising quality or visual appeal.
- Project Duration
- The project started with an idea in March 2023 in Itajai, Santa Catarina, and was completed in September 2024 in Itapema, Santa Catarina, where it was launched to the public in a signature showcase at Araucaria Moveis.
- Operation Flow
- Fragments invites interaction through its sculptural presence and modular concept. The pieces can be displayed individually or as a set, creating a harmonious composition. The vases, candle holders, and table share a design language that emphasizes continuity, as each emerges from the core of another. This approach not only enhances visual cohesion but also reinforces sustainability, offering a conscious and elegant way to incorporate natural materials into everyday spaces.
- Research
- The research explored circular design in furniture and decor, focusing on repurposing discarded marble. Using CNC cutting techniques, we developed a modular, nested approach that minimizes waste, achieving nearly zero material loss. This innovation merges sustainability with luxury, proving that high-end design can be both responsible and beautiful. The study promotes a shift in the industry, encouraging more conscious material use and sustainable product development.
- Inspiration
- Fragments was born from the desire to give new life to discarded marble, transforming waste into timeless design. Inspired by nature's ability to reshape materials over time, the collection follows an organic process: each piece emerging from the core of another. This approach not only minimizes waste but also highlights the beauty of imperfection, embracing sustainability as both a concept and an aesthetic principle.
