About Happy Excursion Model House

Happy Excursion is a model house interior in Shenzhen, China, covering about 418 square meters. The exhibition hall integrates wind, light and water to connect people with nature. The flooring carries a blue stone texture that suggests a calm river under the feet of visitors. A three-dimensional wall of Fantasy White Jade stone forms the central feature, and its surface changes as daylight shifts. A skylight panel with a light film creates soft lighting effects. The wooden cabinets are made from selected, dyed and finished wood veneer.

Z-work Design's Happy Excursion Model House exemplifies a contemporary approach to interior architecture that draws upon traditions of East Asian spatial philosophy while engaging with current discourses on phenomenological experience and material poetry. The installation appears to investigate the liminal qualities between transparency and opacity, between the tangible architectural envelope and the intangible atmospheric conditions of light and reflection, suggesting an awareness of how spatial boundaries might function as permeable membranes rather than rigid dividers. The curving translucent screen, with its delicate chromatic washes evocative of traditional ink wash painting or dyed textile techniques, serves as the compositional and conceptual centerpiece, establishing a threshold condition that invites passage while simultaneously encouraging pause and contemplation. Technical accomplishment is evident in the seamless integration of architectural systems, where concealed cove lighting produces an even ambient luminosity that complements the recessed downlights and reflective floor surfaces work in concert to dematerialize the ground plane. The biomorphic sculptural elements positioned within the space provide essential formal counterpoints, their dense material presence and contained organic geometries creating productive tension against the ethereal lightness of the screen and the expansive horizontal floor. The chromatic strategy demonstrates refined sensibility, limiting the palette to closely related cool hues while introducing subtle warm accents through lighting that create spatial depth and visual interest without disrupting the meditative atmosphere. One might observe resonances with the spatial concerns of contemporary environmental psychology, where architecture seeks to support contemplative states through careful modulation of light, material, and proportion. The work invites viewers to consider how architectural surfaces might function as grounds for artistic expression, how reflection and transparency can multiply spatial readings, and how the careful orchestration of sensory experience contributes to a sense of sanctuary and renewal within the built environment.

Production Technology
The exhibition hall is thoughtfully designed to integrate natural elements such as wind, light, and water, beautifully reflecting the idea of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. The flooring, adorned with a stone texture reminiscent of the shimmering blue Danube, creates a captivating illusion of a tranquil river flowing beneath the visitors' feet, instilling a profound sense of serenity and intrigue in the space.
Design Challenge
To enhance the natural beauty and luxurious feel of the wooden cabinets, the designer meticulously oversees each step of the process, from selecting the wood veneer and dyeing it to arranging the wood grain and applying the finish. The goal is to achieve a perfect harmony between nature and sophistication.
Project Duration
The project was finalized in October, 2024 in Shenzen, China.
Operation Flow
At the focal point of the hall stands an exquisite 3D wall crafted from delicate Fantasy White Jade stone. This stunning feature not only provides a fresh and pure visual experience but also exudes an air of sophistication and elegance. As the natural light shifts throughout the day, the wall comes alive, showcasing a dynamic array of sheens that accentuate its dimensionality and depth, engaging visitors and inviting them to immerse themselves in the harmonious interplay of design and nature.
Research
The undulating patterns of the end wall gracefully extend into the corridor, beautifully complementing the soft linen curtains and the striking main art wall, which together foster an atmosphere of dramatic tension. The vibrant Amazon green floor, reminiscent of gentle waves, radiates warmth and vitality, collaborating with the layered landscape painting curtains to create a captivating focal point. Meanwhile, the skylight panel utilizes an innovative light film technique, casting enchanting lighting effects that infuse the space with energy and lend it a light, ethereal quality.
Inspiration
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Shenzhen's development area, this project draws inspiration from the timeless design philosophies of Butterfly Isle, Northern Abyss, and Whale Cliff, as found in Zhuangzi book A Happy Excursion. It seeks to cultivate an environment that embodies a sense of freedom and tranquility, liberated from the burdens of modern life.
