About Hebei Branch of Cams Cancer Hospital Medical Space
Hebei Branch of Cams Cancer Hospital is a medical interior design covering 593000 square meters. Each area takes a natural theme, such as harbors, mountains, rivers, trees and flowers, expressed through matching forms and materials. Curves and flowing lines link the areas into a bright, soft and soothing whole. The special needs clinic hall recalls rocks, waves and beaches, while the round radiotherapy hall uses nest and abstract flower shapes. The main materials are stone, wall tiles, medical decorative board, latex paint, mineral wool board, PVC and aluminum board.
Calvin Leo's Hebei Branch of Cams Cancer Hospital Medical Space emerges from contemporary healthcare design discourse that increasingly recognizes the therapeutic potential of architectural environments in supporting patient wellbeing and recovery. This remarkable atrium exemplifies the integration of biophilic design principles with the functional requirements of a specialized medical facility, creating a central gathering space that transcends the utilitarian expectations traditionally associated with hospital interiors. The designer demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how natural light, organic materials, and generous spatial volumes can contribute to psychological comfort during times of vulnerability and uncertainty. The dramatic oculus with its delicate diamond lattice pattern serves both practical and symbolic functions, maximizing daylight penetration while creating an architectural gesture that suggests openness, hope, and connection to the natural world beyond. The warm timber cladding wrapping the cylindrical walls references domestic comfort and natural environments, deliberately countering the clinical coldness that historically characterized medical facilities. Technical accomplishment is evident in the seamless integration of complex programmatic requirements including reception services, waiting areas, circulation paths, and wayfinding systems within a unified aesthetic vision that prioritizes human experience. The inclusion of living plant material at the composition's center reinforces the biophilic commitment while providing visual focal points that orient visitors within the expansive space. Accessibility considerations appear thoroughly integrated, with level flooring, clear sightlines, and generous circulation widths accommodating diverse mobility needs. The work invites contemplation of how architectural design might serve as a form of care, creating environments where healing extends beyond medical intervention to encompass the sensory and emotional dimensions of the patient journey.
