About Holy Sky Residential House
Holy Sky is a residential interior design created for a Christian family in Taiwan. The 130 square meter home uses floor boundary lines to define the television wall and the living area, extending to the wall to form a cross-like image. Ceiling lighting suggests rays of light descending from above, converging in a circular corridor that connects three doors. An open plan layout links the areas and expands the use of space. Similar materials and colors are applied to the surfaces to create a harmonious whole. Durable green paint and adaptable cabinetry reduce future waste.
ZENG JYUN SHEN's Holy Sky Residential House exemplifies the evolving paradigm of contemporary residential interior design where spatial fluidity, material refinement, and experiential lighting converge to create environments of profound domestic tranquility and understated sophistication, this project participates in broader conversations within twenty-first-century interior architecture regarding the role of residential space as sanctuary and wellspring of psychological restoration, engaging design philosophies that prioritize occupant wellbeing, sensory comfort, and aesthetic serenity over decorative excess or stylistic assertion, the work demonstrates particular affinity with design movements emphasizing organic modernism, where biomorphic forms and curved vocabularies soften the orthogonal geometries of contemporary architecture, and warm minimalism, where restrained material palettes and simplified forms create visual calm without austerity, the spatial planning reveals accomplished understanding of contemporary domestic life patterns, the open-plan configuration dissolving traditional room boundaries to create fluid zones for multiple simultaneous activities, living and dining realms flow seamlessly yet maintain distinct character through subtle material transitions, furniture arrangement, and lighting emphasis, the compositional achievement extends beyond mere functional planning to orchestrate carefully calibrated visual rhythms and spatial sequences that reward movement through the environment and extended habitation, the chromatic sophistication deserves particular attention, the palette operates within narrow tonal range yet avoids monotony through subtle variation, layering warm neutrals from pale taupe through greige to ivory and champagne, punctuated by strategic accent color in the blush pink dining chairs whose dusty rose velvet introduces essential warmth and chromatic variation without disrupting overall harmony, metallic accents in warm bronze and rose gold finishes provide reflective contrast and suggest understated luxury while maintaining tonal coherence with the warm neutral foundation, this color strategy demonstrates nuanced understanding of how restrained palettes create visual coherence and psychological calm while requiring exceptional attention to tonal relationship and textural variation to maintain visual interest, the lighting design constitutes perhaps the most significant formal achievement, employing sophisticated multi-layered strategy that transforms illumination from mere functional necessity into primary architectural material and experiential definer, the integration of linear LED channels recessed into ceiling planes creates graphic luminous drawing that emphasizes spatial geometry and horizontal extension, these glowing lines function simultaneously as ambient light sources, architectural emphasis, and compositional elements guiding eye movement through the space, the dramatically backlit display alcove with its rhythmic vertical ribbing becomes sculptural focal point, its warm amber glow creating visual anchor and atmospheric centerpiece, recessed downlights provide general illumination while decorative pendants above the dining table contribute both focused task lighting and sculptural presence, this layered approach allows varied lighting scenarios supporting different activities and moods while maintaining consistent design language, material selection and detailing reveal commitment to tactile quality and sensory richness within the minimalist vocabulary, smooth painted architectural surfaces provide neutral backdrop, lustrous wood flooring introduces natural material warmth and subtle grain pattern, polished terrazzo or aggregate stone flooring creates textural contrast through speckled composition, upholstery fabrics range from matte linen-like weaves to plush velvet and nubby bouclé introducing essential tactile variation, metallic furniture components and light fixtures provide reflective counterpoint to predominantly matte surfaces, the furniture selection demonstrates sophisticated understanding of contemporary design language, pieces exhibit organic rounded forms eschewing harsh corners in favor of inviting curves, sculptural bases and supports introduce visual lightness through negative space and geometric cutouts, proportions balance substantial comfort with visual refinement avoiding both delicate fragility and heavy mass, the work invites consideration of how residential interior design in the contemporary moment negotiates between competing desires for minimalist clarity and sensory warmth, between open flowing space and intimate enclosure, between architectural statement and comfortable inhabitation, how might such carefully calibrated environments support daily rhythms of domestic life while providing visual and psychological restoration, in what ways does the integration of lighting as primary design element rather than afterthought transform our experience and understanding of interior space, what possibilities emerge when material restraint and refined detail replace decorative accumulation as markers of residential quality and care.

- Unique Properties
- We created a symbol of Jesus’s arrival within the space, using floor boundary lines to define the TV wall and living area, extending all the way to the wall to form a cross-like image.
The surrounding ceiling lighting resembles rays of light pouring down from the heavens, converging in a circular corridor that seamlessly connects the three doors, creating a unique atmosphere within the space. - Dimensions & Packaging
- This space is 130 square meters.

- Production Technology
- In the future, environmental protection on Earth will be a necessary consideration. Therefore, green materials were chosen for the paint.
Durability was also taken into account to reduce the need for repeated applications and minimize waste.
For the cabinetry, flexible designs were used, allowing for adaptability in future updates or space innovations.
This ensures that the cabinets can be continuously reused, reducing environmental waste and enhancing the potential for green materials and recycling. - Design Challenge
- In use, we need to consider different age groups, as their reach and habits vary. Therefore, we designed everything with ease of access and convenience in mind.
Whether it's the simple and intuitive color schemes or the natural flow of movement within the space, everything is aimed at improving the usability and functionality of the environment for users. - Project Duration
- Start in Taiwan in January 2024 and complete in Taiwan in September 2024
- Operation Flow
- We used similar materials and colors for the various surface finishing needs. Whether it's the special paint for the TV wall, the cabinet doors in the entryway, or the flooring materials, everything is matched under the same theme.
This approach creates maximum harmony in the overall space, allowing each area to feel coordinated within the entire environment.
This, in turn, draws the user's attention and enhances their satisfaction with the space. - Research
- In our spatial design, we considered how to use the most efficient method to maximize the space's benefits without wasting any small areas, while also ensuring the overall aesthetics create a pleasant experience for users.
We used an open-plan layout to establish spatial connections and expanded space usage by overlapping areas. As a result, we created a comfortable living environment and enhanced interaction for multiple users within the same space. - Inspiration
- We drew inspiration for the design from Christianity. Since the users are a devout Christian family, we envisioned rays of light descending from heaven and the imagery of the cross, as well as using simple materials to shape the overall design in terms of form, color, and texture.
We also incorporated layers of light and shadow from the heavenly light, creating a sacred, simple, and natural spatial environment. - Image Credits
