About JW Marriott Hotel Hospitality
JW Marriott Hotel is a hotel located in the seaside district of Fengxian in Shanghai, China. The building covers 52000 square meters and holds 265 guest rooms and suites. The facilities include 1800 square meters of meeting space, a 900 square meter banquet hall, three restaurants, a bar, a spa, a children's activity centre and an executive lounge. The interior is made of marble, timber, metal, stainless steel, glass and carved wood. Curved forms and shades of sable and blue recall the nearby lake and sea.
Situated within the contemporary discourse of luxury hospitality design that synthesizes Eastern spatial philosophy with international modernist principles, Bo Liu's acclaimed interior for this prestigious hospitality environment demonstrates exceptional command of material expression, luminous atmosphere, and ceremonial procession through architectural space. The design appears to draw upon traditional screen architecture—the permeable boundaries that have long characterized refined Asian interior traditions—reinterpreting these historical precedents through contemporary fabrication and material selection that achieves both cultural resonance and timeless sophistication. The towering perforated columns, positioned with precise bilateral symmetry, function simultaneously as structural markers, spatial definers, and sculptural presences that transform the act of arrival into a contemplative threshold experience. The chromatic strategy employs a restrained palette of warm metallics against neutral grounds, creating an envelope of golden luminosity that suggests both natural warmth and refined luxury without ostentation. Technical accomplishment is evident throughout: the precision alignment of hundreds of vertical battens, the carefully calibrated aperture patterns on the central columns, the seamless integration of concealed lighting that activates the architectural surfaces with changing natural light conditions. The composition invites interpretation through the lens of contemporary phenomenological architecture, where material presence, light modulation, and human scale combine to create spaces that engage visitors on sensory and emotional registers beyond mere function. One might observe how the design honors the rituals of hospitality—arrival, pause, orientation, procession—through its carefully choreographed spatial sequence. How might the shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day transform the experience of this space for those who linger within its golden embrace?

- Design Challenge
- We were tasked to design a contemporary JW Marriott branded hotel 52000㎡ that can articulate Marriott International’s luxury portfolio brand strategy, philosophy and globally consistent image while take the owner's tight budget and the operation's need into consideration. One of the biggest challenges is how to balance the cost of design , the cost of maintenance and operation and the expectations and standards of the brand. Furthermore, due to the complexity & diversity of functions within a hotel building, interior designers in the hospitality field need to coordinate with various technical stakeholders including Architects, Structural, Engineers, MEP Engineers, Contractors and manufacturers to ensure all physical features and architectural elements are aligned with the client's vision, business requirements and operation standards.
- Project Duration
- The project starts design in November 2018 and finishes in May 2020, locates in Fengxian Shanghai, China
- Operation Flow
- The whole project is strategically planned and well-thought out. The most efficient planning configurations design solutions were given by the designer to make use of each corner to create more interesting spatial sequence, to keep a minimum amount of circulation and service space. The perception theory was applied to enhance the humanization level of the hotel and get the customers' affirmation.
- Research
- Inspired by the principles of mindfulness, JW Marriott is a brand designed to allow guests to focus on feeling whole – present in mind, nourished in body, and revitalized in spirit – through programs and offerings that encourage them to come together and experience every moment to the fullest. Our research is based on how to cater for sophisticated, mindful travelers who come seeking experiences that help them be fully present, foster meaningful connections and feed the soul.
- Inspiration
- The hotel's style narrative is inspired by its natural surroundings Jinhai Lake, with its exterior imagined as the legendary bird Roc, from the fable of “Roc hopping into the sea”. The sense of creativity is carried throughout the experience, unveiling layer after layer. The design elements also incorporate natural materials such as wood and marble in undulating, curvilinear forms that reflect the waves of the nearby East Sea. The hotel’s 265 guestrooms and suites offer luxurious comfort in restful shades of sable and blue, echoing the beaches and sea with clean modern lines and every thoughtful amenity for guests' comfort and convenience.
