About Lasso Decorative Textile
Lasso as a definition is a long rope with a running noose at one end. Instead of being inspired in; this textile is a result of. It has both special touch and aesthetic besides some special frayed channels so the light can pass through very softly. It is half industrial - half crafted, woven in electronic looms and cut by hand. This project is very attractive and addictive as a candy and has been one of the top challenges and discovery on my career as a textile designer. This project is about serendipia, stumbling upon, chance discovery, fortuity and accident.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- half industrial - half crafted, designed with textile CAD software, woven in jacquard electronic looms and cut by hand. It is woven industrially, but cut by hand which gives job to machines and external people. It forms vertical channels as a kind of fray where the light can pass through very sofltly. The frays are crafted processes and lasts months. A fabric with this kind of processes in the industry mills is nearly impossible but not that much.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Widths available: 1.40 m and 2.80 m. Rapport repeat: 35 cm width x 25 cm height. Uses: lamps, pillows, bedscarfs and decorative curtains. As a finish ironing the loose fur brings more volume and the frayed channels are more obvious. It is of massive production and the loose yarns are strongly moored with a tafeta special weave union.

- Production Technology
- All polyester dyed yarns woven in Jacquard electronic looms. The floated yarns are cut manually by a special tool we call knife shutter. The weave technique is very old (double fabric). However the important aspect is how I applied the weaves interlaced in order to be viable to be produced and not just as a prototype as good productivity performance. The special tool developed reminded textile engineers old techniques to make corduroy.
- Design Challenge
- At the beginning the aim was to develop a fabric with square bags. It would have little bags to put inside tools or jewelry. After weaving and testing different techiques, this came up as a serendipity all of it. There were more than 10 previews designs to get to the final lasso fabric. The weaves interaction result was floats in warp and weft. To cut the yarns in vertical and horizontal, we developed a special tool that works as a long shuttle knife to have a better and faster production. It was an enormous challenge to have it accomplished as a product and to convince the mill that it would work.
- Project Duration
- The project started in March, 2012 and ended in September, 2012.
- Operation Flow
- It has a special appearance as it seems as an extra application or embroidery upon the fabric but in fact it is woven like that. People always want to touch first than see the furry yarns. If there is light behind the soft feeling is quite special and light passes through the frayed parts. This kind of textile can replace goose feathers.
- Research
- The research was completely experimental. Textile engineers were afraid that using this technique on industrial looms could not work, specially the machines weaving. The process of cutting the loose yarns was hard in order to bring a product that because of the hand crafted process would not be so expensive that would not work with the market prices. Besides the lead time to deliver a roll of this product within 3 weeks at least. Since warping process till the client's door. The cut part can be done by external workers so other people get a job.
- Inspiration
- I named it lasso as a long rope with a running noose at one end. This project can be described as: experimentation. This fabric started with the research of something very different from the result. More than inspiration this project is about having luck, stumbling upon, chance discovery, fortuity and accident. It is a piece of hard work, research, mulish and not withdraw.

Design Interview about Lasso Decorative Textile
Experimenting on industrial jacquard machines with yarns and mixing techniques. Always looking to do something different, never repeat myself.
I wanted to make a textile with little bags to keep out little tools or jewelry. But on my way to discover the bags I came with another design: floated yarns with frayed appearance, but very strongly moored to the fabric. My aim for doing this kind of fabric experiments is to get something out of the blue.
Publish it and share it with my clients in order to get more work and more business opportunities. Embrace the chance to get global exposure with my design studio and get clients worldwide.
It took me months to finally get the design indeed from the thinking and experimenting to the actual manufacturing.
I totally pursuit a risk experimenting on techniques half industrial and half hand made.
I already have a deal with one company in Mecico. It has already been commercialized on some catalogues and for other clients with pillows on department stores.
Take challengues and new risks even when mills say no.
This particular work was a serendipia, so maybe indirectly some previous designs influenced just because of the acknowledge of diverse techniques helped me to solve this design.

I have never seen a afbric like this before. It is strange, different, friendly to touch, if there is any light behind it fells very soflty, tenuous and nice.
I came with the idea that once I have these loose yarns woven horizontally which where cut at some point of the process. I thought about shoe lacing or something similar. I named it Lasso, which means a long rope with a running noose at one end used especially to catch horses and cattle. This names fits perfectly because the yarns look like very long but knotted by themselves, into the fabric and the released when they are cut.
I have to make with some engineers a special tool we named shutter kinfe of recycled metal parts of old looms; to cut the loose yarns on both ways: vertical and horizontal. In order to make a viable and affordable product.
I made the design on CAD special textile Sofware because I worked it on electronic industrial jacquard looms, which sometimes is kind of difficult beacuse when you design it into the computer as a drawing, the result specifically on this fabric has nothing to do. It was difficult to visualize how it would come out.

The loose yarns which give different visual, feeling and functional aspects. It is rare to see products half industrial and half hand made. Normally these two things seem to be opposed.
I worked with the help of a textile engineer with the "shuttlle knife" to develop a special tool. Because as part of a finish, the cut part was difficult to do without taking costs very high, so we developed this special tool to get the efficiency and low cost of production.
It is has practically a lot to do. this fabric cannot be woven without technology.
This design has to do with technique, weaves behavior and experimentation on woven jacquard fabrics.
Getting the fur aspect I wanted, be affordable to produce with a fair price, persuading the textile mill it would work on the looms and on the new finish process, plus into the decoration market get the interest in possible buyers.
Because I wanted my design to meet global competition. I already had taken some designs nationally and in Iberoamerican competitions. Now I think this is an opportunity to compete with the world, cause now we are designing for everyone. Also prove myself that my work is really valuable and works. This a big challenge for me.
I have learnt that there no impossibles if you take risks and of you do things, take actions instead just thinking them.
Being on this competition and getting two awards is another big watershed on my textile career.
