About Lattice Chair Weaving Armchair

The word “lattice” means lines intertwined with, and intersecting, each other horizontally and vertically.Especially use Taiwan's high-quality bamboo with excellent toughness, combines bamboo craft into woodcraft via weaving bamboos and bent woods together. By preserving and integrating the flexibility of bamboos and the firmness of wood, so weight of the chair is only 4 kg, but it can withstand more than 120 kg, the lighter weight allows the elderly and children to move around more easily.
Single-sided armrest design allows users to sit in a variety of ways, more free and flexible.

Chen Kuan-Cheng's Lattice Chair Weaving Armchair emerges from a rich lineage of bentwood furniture innovation while charting distinctly contemporary territory through its remarkable synthesis of traditional weaving craft and modern structural engineering. The work demonstrates exceptional technical virtuosity in the manipulation of laminated wood strips, which flow continuously from the chair's skeletal frame through the seating surface, creating an integrated structural and comfort system that eliminates the conventional distinction between frame and upholstery. This approach suggests deep engagement with material properties, as each curved element must be precisely steam-bent or laminated to achieve the flowing organic geometry while maintaining sufficient resilience to support the human body. The lattice weaving pattern at the seat and back creates a visually dynamic surface that appears to breathe and flex, inviting tactile investigation while providing ergonomic support through its inherent spring-like quality. Compositionally, the armchair achieves remarkable visual lightness despite its substantial presence, the negative spaces between woven elements allowing light to penetrate and shadows to form intricate patterns that shift throughout the day. The solid cylindrical members of the frame, particularly the elegantly curved armrests and sturdy legs, provide visual grounding and structural stability that anchor the more delicate woven passages. This interplay between solid and void, between rigid frame and flexible weave, creates productive tension that animates the form and rewards extended contemplation. The staging of the photograph itself demonstrates curatorial intelligence, positioning the chair against neutral concrete surfaces that emphasize the warmth of natural wood while the carefully placed book and spectacles introduce human narrative, suggesting the thoughtful reader who might pause here to engage with ideas. The dramatic shadow cast upon the wall functions almost as a secondary artwork, abstracting the chair's complex three-dimensional geometry into a graphic interpretation that reveals underlying pattern logic. How might this chair transform the daily ritual of sitting into an encounter with living craft tradition?

Production Technology
Use the Taiwan-Specific Moso bamboo, and bending technology to complete the more difficult small angle bending.
Design Challenge
Bending wood can also be cut in different ways and turned into double armchairs or series of other furniture.
Project Duration
The project started in April 2019 in Taiwan and finished in december 2019 in taiwan.
Operation Flow
Single-sided armrest design allows users to sit in a variety of ways, more free and flexible, and unlike ordinary solid wood seats, the woven elasticity makes sitting more comfortable, and the lighter weight allows the elderly and children to move around more easily.
Inspiration
Inspired by the waterfall, the back and armrests of the chair flow downward in a beautiful lattice pattern, symbolizing the fusion of wood and bamboo, and the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.
Combining the flexibility of bamboo and the strength of wood to form the perfect chair.
