About Luyao x National Palace Museum Trendy Toys

Luyao x National Palace Museum is a series of collectible figurines inspired by artifacts held in the National Palace Museum. The Hedgehog figures use a porcelain-like translucency to represent children with autism and the idea of self-protection. SU Zombie Alpha addresses food waste, and Kakigoori Kuma refers to global warming. The Jadeite Cabbage Hedgehog is made of polyurethane resin, while the smaller figures are made of PVC vinyl with faux-porcelain painting. The series joins classical decorative motifs with modern character design to raise public awareness.

Positioned at the intersection of contemporary collectible design and classical cultural heritage, these trendy toys by Shih Ting Ling represent a thoughtful dialogue between traditional museum artifacts and contemporary character-based design sensibilities, demonstrating how venerable aesthetic traditions may find renewed expression through the visual language of designer vinyl figures. The collection appears to draw inspiration from historical treasures, reinterpreting classical motifs including the celebrated jadeite cabbage and blue-and-white porcelain traditions through the accessible and engaging format of collectible toys, thereby creating objects that function simultaneously as playful companions and vessels of cultural memory. The technical accomplishment evident in these figures merits particular attention, from the complex sculptural articulation of the central character's elaborate headdress with its multiple tiers of undulating blue forms accented by precisely applied gilding, to the masterful handling of translucent materials in the jade-toned companion that captures the luminous quality of carved stone. The chromatic decisions demonstrate sophisticated understanding of traditional color symbolism, with the dominant blue-and-white palette evoking centuries of ceramic tradition while the jade green and gold accents reference the precious materials historically associated with imperial patronage and cultural refinement. Each figure balances reverence for source material with contemporary playfulness, their rounded forms and expressive simplified features inviting handling and emotional connection while their material quality and decorative complexity reward sustained visual engagement. The presentation against neutral darkness elevates these objects beyond mere merchandise into contemplative artifacts that invite consideration of how cultural heritage travels across time and format, finding new audiences through unexpected vessels.

Production Technology
This collection intertwines modern and traditional aesthetics using PU resin and PVC enamel to mirror porcelain textures. The Jadeite Cabbage Hedgehogs emulate jadeite luminescence, whereas Blue and White Porcelain Hedgehogs introduce classical elegance with lotus patterns. The SU Zombie Alpha leverages lacquer techniques to reflect cultural relics. The Kakigoori Kuma, juxtaposing translucent design with chrysanthemum patterns, fuses classic grace with playful charm.
Design Challenge
The design process faced challenges of integrating antiquities with modern toys, achieving porcelain-like translucency in vinyl toys, and technical difficulties in painting. Despite these obstacles, creativity and artistic value thrived through experimentation. The project, influenced by the zeitgeist, dealt with intellectual property protection in partnership with the National Palace Museum and addressed constraints related to materials, craftsmanship, and technical expertise.
Project Duration
This series began its design process in Taichung, Taiwan in June 2022 and was completed in October 2022 in the same location.
Operation Flow
Autism is symbolized through hedgehog forms, signifying self-protection. Jadeite Cabbage hedgehog merges art, culture, and layered craftsmanship. The piece, made from PU resin, encourages inner strength. Autism awareness is highlighted using a Ming Xuande bowl design and faux-porcelain painting techniques. Food waste issues are explored through a sushi-inspired zombie design in three shades of blue. The polar bear character emphasizes environmental concerns.
Research
Through meticulous research of the National Palace Museum's artifacts, the design process integrated features of ancient porcelain into soft vinyl toys. This innovative approach explored the fusion of classical culture within modern society, striving to merge creativity with history. Extensive paint tests ensured accurate representation of artifacts' features, with the goal of providing fresh perspectives on history while raising societal and environmental awareness.
Inspiration
The Hedgehog series, drawing inspiration from autistic children, uses porcelain like translucency to embody vulnerability, promoting empathetic public understanding. Meanwhile, the SU Zombie Alpha and Kakigoori Kuma confront environmental issues through creative designs, advocating for waste reduction and global warming action. These creations collectively amplify public awareness and compassion, uniting artistry with critical societal dialogues.
