About Mia Foldable Cat Bag
Mia is a foldable cat bag designed for use at home and outdoors. Mia opens quickly into a cat bed measuring 460 mm in width, depth and height. When folded, Mia is only 80 mm deep and can be stored like a book. The folding structure is made from DuPont paper and recycled board, materials selected for environmental reasons. Replaceable wearing parts allow easy cleaning and maintenance. The book-like appearance suits home interiors. Mia reduces the space needed to carry and store pet travel supplies.
Ziel Home Furnishing Technology Co., Ltd's Mia Foldable Cat Bag emerges from a contemporary design tradition that celebrates the synthesis of aesthetic refinement with practical functionality, embodying principles that have defined progressive pet product design in recent decades, this work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of material properties, employing what appears to be engineered wood panels with visible grain patterns that reference traditional craftsmanship while achieving the structural flexibility required for its transformative mechanism, the compositional presentation strategically displays both operational states simultaneously, allowing viewers to appreciate the remarkable spatial efficiency achieved through the accordion pleating system that collapses a substantial shelter into a slim portable format, the cat-head silhouette aperture functions as both whimsical brand signature and ergonomically considered entrance, its curved ears and facial outline softening the otherwise geometric vocabulary while creating an immediately recognizable visual identity, technically the design achieves admirable balance between structural integrity when expanded and compactness when stored, the pleated body suggesting influences from both traditional paper folding arts and modern portable architecture, thematically the work engages with contemporary concerns regarding space-conscious urban living where multipurpose transformable objects hold particular value, the presentation setting itself carefully constructed with muted walls, natural greenery, and filtered daylight reinforces positioning within sophisticated domestic environments where pet accessories must harmonize with refined interior design sensibilities rather than disrupting them, the inclusion of an actual feline occupant within the expanded shelter authenticates the design's purpose while adding emotional warmth to the technical demonstration, one might consider how this design participates in broader movements toward elevating everyday domestic objects through thoughtful material selection and form-giving, inviting viewers to contemplate the evolving relationship between human living spaces and the accommodation of beloved animal companions within aesthetically conscious homes.

- Production Technology
- FurBallRetreat is crafted from environmentally friendly materials such as Dupont paper and recycled board, with full consideration given to environmental friendliness. The detachable property of DuPont paper enables it to contract flexibly, creating an extremely convenient product. This design not only emphasizes practicality and portability but also reflects a concern and commitment to sustainability.
- Design Challenge
- One of the greatest challenges we encountered during the implementation and research process was ensuring the compatibility of the FurBallRetreat between home and outdoor spaces. We strive to ensure that people do not have to occupy more space to accommodate the cat bag, and hope that FurBallRetreat will not only solve the problem of carrying the cat bag but also integrate into family life. At the same time, more environmentally friendly materials used in the design of cat nests are researched.
- Project Duration
- The project started in Shenzhen in March 2024 and completed in Shenzhen in June 2024.
- Operation Flow
- Whether you're in a garden, patio, or camping outdoors, FurBallRetreat can be set up quickly. When unfolded, it becomes a cat's bed that can be placed in any space, while when folded, it takes up only the thickness of a book. The use of replaceable wearing parts for easy cleaning and maintenance ensures that the living environment is always clean and hygienic.
- Research
- We surveyed 500 cat owners and discovered that 83% of them carry a cat bag when going out with their cat, while only 12% do not. This indicates that carrying a cat bag is a common phenomenon. However, the cat bag occupies a large space and its storage when not in use is also a problem. In response to this challenge, we designed a portable cat bag for home, aiming to solve the problem of idleness, reduce storage space, make it easy to carry, and provide cats with more security. At the same time, more environmentally friendly materials are selected and matched.
- Inspiration
- When traveling or engaging in outdoor activities with cats, it is often necessary to address the issue of carrying pet outdoor supplies that take up a lot of space. This not only adds to the burden of the owner but also brings the trouble of storing idle items at home. In response to the challenges that families and cats encounter when traveling together, we explored how to design more portable cat shelters, aiming to provide a more convenient and flexible solution.
