About Monochrome Muse Residence Building

Monochrome Muse is the interior design of the shared areas on the ground floor of a residential building in Taiwan. The space of 376.8 square meters includes a lobby, a lounge area, a meeting room, a gym and a children's playroom. A calm gray tone forms the base and supports the display of large artworks, giving the interior the character of a gallery. Curved forms run from the ceiling to the counters. Sculptures shaped like eyes, feathers and teardrops are placed throughout the shared space. Architectural concrete, wood and marble are the main materials.

Monochrome Muse Residence Building by Xinhui Construction Co., Ltd. engages the evolving dialogue within contemporary residential and hospitality design regarding the dissolution of rigid programmatic boundaries between domestic life and professional activity, proposing instead fluid spatial environments where the rituals of contemplation, collaboration, dining, and repose unfold within a continuous architectural envelope unified by disciplined material restraint and chromatic sophistication. The compositional achievement of this interior environment resides substantially in its mastery of spatial layering and transparency, where black steel-framed glass partitions establish distinct zones while preserving visual continuity, allowing light and sightlines to penetrate through multiple spatial depths while maintaining acoustic separation and programmatic clarity. The material palette demonstrates exceptional refinement, juxtaposing the cool elegance of white marble veined with soft gray striations against the warm organic presence of honey-toned timber cladding, the industrial precision of black powder-coated steel frames, the soft receptive quality of charcoal upholstery fabrics, and the luminous metallic warmth of brass or bronze lighting fixtures, each material selected both for its intrinsic aesthetic qualities and its tactile and atmospheric contribution to the inhabited experience. The geometric pendant chandelier suspended above the marble conference table functions as both functional illumination and sculptural presence, its linear black armature supporting cylindrical metallic pendants that introduce verticality, rhythmic repetition, and warm accent luminosity, establishing a focal hierarchy that draws attention while maintaining the overall spatial restraint. The generous fenestration along the left elevation floods the interior with natural illumination while framing views of lush verdant landscape, introducing biophilic connection and temporal variation as daylight quality shifts throughout hours and seasons, the transparency simultaneously extending spatial perception outward while grounding the interior within its specific environmental context. Technical execution appears meticulous across all visible junctures: the seamless integration of recessed ceiling lighting channels, the precision alignment of steel partition mullions, the flawless book-matched marble surface spanning substantial dimensions, and the crisp detailing where disparate materials meet without visible compromise. The seating arrangement divides into two distinct but visually related groupings: a formal dining configuration surrounding the marble table with structured upright chairs suggesting focused meetings or shared meals, and a more relaxed conversational cluster of four substantial lounge chairs around a lower surface inviting extended dialogue or contemplative rest, this dual provision acknowledging the multiple social and functional registers contemporary living and working environments must accommodate. Thematically, this interior seems to explore material authenticity, spatial transparency, chromatic discipline, and the potential for environments to support both productivity and repose through thoughtful calibration of proportion, light, texture, and programmatic flexibility. The restrained palette and refined detailing suggest influences from contemporary minimalist traditions while avoiding aesthetic austerity through the introduction of warm timber tones, soft textile surfaces, and the organic vitality of exterior landscape views, achieving a balance between formal clarity and human warmth. How might such carefully composed environments influence the quality of human interaction and individual thought, and what does this spatial language suggest about evolving expectations for residential and professional environments in contemporary life?

Unique Properties
The lobby design blends modernity and elegance, with curved structures creating a smooth, dynamic aesthetic from the ceiling to the countertops. The arcs resemble natural eye curves, inviting people into the space as if engaging in silent conversation, sparking deep reflection. Upon entering the gray-toned space, it feels like stepping into an art museum. Artistic elements are seamlessly integrated, with eye, feather, and teardrop sculptures placed throughout the shared space, reinforcing the design's core concept and connection to art exhibitions.
Dimensions & Packaging
The venue has a total area of 376.8 square meters and is located on the first floor. Production Technology
The designer used architectural concrete, eco-friendly wood, and marble as the main materials. Architectural concrete provides a rustic, natural, and modern aesthetic with its original texture and color tone. Natural wood brings warmth and intimacy. Marble on the walls and countertops of the living room adds a touch of elegance and luxury to the space. Green building materials are aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly and emphasize the designer's commitment to sustainability and unadorned beauty.
Design Challenge
The venue has a six-meter-high ceiling with multiple columns and beams. The designer adopted a series of innovative solutions. To reduce the visual pressure of the pillars, the designer chose to cover them with materials of the same color as the surroundings to weaken the structure. Moreover, the designer also utilized lighting and shadow effects to subtly conceal the pillars, keeping the space fluid and unified. The scheme demonstrates the designer's meticulous attention to detail and technical mastery.
Project Duration
The project finished in April 2024 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The animal forest theme in the children's playroom has received positive feedback from residents. Parents noted that the large windows enhanced playtime fun, while the vibrant colors sparked their children's creativity. The artistic atmosphere also fosters children's aesthetic development. The owner is highly satisfied with the design, finding it a perfect balance of practicality and artistry. They plan to use this design as a reference for future projects. These responses highlight the designer's creativity and professionalism.
Research
The 'Monochrome Muse' project is a shared space where color and artwork are deeply connected. The designer used a calm gray tone as the base, enhancing the artwork and creating an intellectual, elegant atmosphere. The space, resembling a gallery, features large-scale artworks, offering a visual and spiritual feast. Art elements are integrated throughout, with sculptures resembling eyes, feathers, and teardrops, symbolizing discovery and beauty. The design invites residents to experience new artistic surprises each time they enter.
Inspiration
The site is a residential building with more than 100 households. The designer's motivation is to create a different kind of living experience for the residents. She attempted to break through the framework of conventional shared facilities design and embed art in every corner of the living space. A calm gray tone is used as the base, and its inclusive nature enhances the display of artwork and sets a sensible and elegant atmosphere. The gallery-like corridor displays several large-scale artworks, bringing a visual and spiritual feast to the residents.
