About Montigo Experience Store Retail Design
Montigo's Hydration Haven redefines eco-conscious retail through a curvilinear, immersive store at Singapore's Ion Orchard. Centered on a dynamic curved videowall the design replaces disposable posters with adaptive digital content, slashing material waste and carbon footprints. Interactive laser engraving stations and a vibrant color wonderland invite customers to craft personalized thermal bottles. Merges kinetic allure with customization.
Chong Hean Teo's Montigo Experience Store Retail Design exemplifies the evolution of contemporary commercial interior architecture toward experiential environments that transcend transactional function to become immersive brand narratives and spatial storytelling platforms. Working within the design language of twenty-first-century retail innovation, this project demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how spatial composition, material selection, chromatic orchestration, and integrated lighting can collectively construct atmospheric identity and emotional resonance for lifestyle brands seeking to establish meaningful connections with discerning consumers. The compositional achievement here resides in the masterful balance between architectural clarity and organic fluidity, most notably realized through the sculptural counter element whose undulating form provides graceful counterpoint to the rectilinear discipline governing the surrounding display systems and architectural envelope, this formal dialogue between curve and line creating visual interest and spatial dynamism while maintaining overall coherence and navigational legibility. The chromatic sophistication of the palette merits particular attention, as the designer has deployed a carefully calibrated system of cool powder blue as the dominant atmospheric hue suggesting freshness, clarity, and contemporary sensibility, balanced by warm blonde wood tones that introduce organic materiality and tactile approachability, all unified through crisp white surfaces that enhance luminosity and spatial openness, with strategic golden yellow circular accents functioning as punctuation marks that activate the composition and reinforce brand identity through chromatic consistency. The technical facility evident in the material selections and their integration demonstrates refined sensibility, particularly in the translucent ribbed counter panels that appear to glow from within through concealed lighting, creating an ethereal floating quality that elevates a functional service element into a sculptural focal point worthy of contemplation as spatial art. The lighting design reveals sophisticated layering of illumination strategies, combining ambient environmental light that ensures overall visibility and comfort, targeted accent lighting that highlights product zones and creates hierarchical emphasis, and integrated architectural lighting that transforms structural elements into luminous objects, this multivalent approach demonstrating how contemporary retail environments employ light not merely for visibility but as a primary medium for atmospheric construction and emotional calibration. The spatial planning exhibits clarity in its zoning strategy, establishing distinct territories for customer service interaction at the foreground counter, product exploration through the transparent shelving systems that invite browsing and discovery, and digital communication via the large-format screen that introduces narrative content and lifestyle imagery, each zone clearly defined yet visually connected through material and chromatic continuity. This work invites consideration of how physical retail environments in an increasingly digital marketplace must offer experiences that transcend mere product access to provide sensory richness, spatial beauty, and brand immersion that cannot be replicated through screen-based shopping, the designer here suggesting that thoughtfully conceived material environments possess enduring value as spaces for human gathering, discovery, and the pleasure of being present within carefully crafted aesthetic worlds. One might observe how the design balances restraint and vitality, the overall composition maintaining serene minimalist discipline while strategic color accents and the dynamic counter form prevent austerity and inject playful energy, this negotiation between calm and excitement perhaps reflecting the broader challenge facing contemporary lifestyle brands seeking to appear both sophisticated and approachable, both curated and welcoming. The work seems to propose that retail space can function as a form of applied spatial art, where every surface, material transition, light quality, and chromatic relationship contributes to a total aesthetic experience designed to slow perception, invite lingering, and create memorable encounters that build brand affinity through beauty and atmospheric resonance rather than through aggressive commercial persuasion, the space offering itself as a generous stage for human interaction with thoughtfully designed objects within an environment that honors both products and visitors through spatial dignity and visual refinement.

- Production Technology
- the overview design was first draft in freehand , then transfer into AutoCAD to get it's proper layout. and ultimately build and render the 3D models with sketchup & vray.
- Design Challenge
- Designing for a compact, transit-adjacent space demanded strategic use of technology and form. The curved video wall addressed spatial constraints by optimizing vertical visibility, ensuring the store stood out amid visual clutter while serving as a sustainable alternative to disposable signage. Durable, locally sourced materials were prioritized to withstand high foot traffic, aligning with circular design principles.
- Project Duration
- The design process started in June 2024. Videowall was fabricated in Shenzhen. Renovation started in September 2024 and completed in October 2024 in ION Orchard Singapore.
- Operation Flow
- The result is a retail environment transcending transactional space, offering a multisensory journey where customers “drink their way” through color, light, and personalization. By merging digital allure with tactile engagement and sustainable practices, Montigo’s store has become a landmark of experiential retail - driving footfall, dwell time, and emotional connection to the brand while setting a benchmark for eco-conscious retail design.
- Research
- The primary intent was to create a dynamic, interactive environment that mirrors Montigo’s ethos of individuality, vibrancy, and environmental stewardship.
Key goals included:
Elevating the in-store customization journey through tactile and digital touchpoints.
-Capturing attention from fast-moving commuters.
-Reinforcing brand identity through spatial aesthetics.
-Minimizing environmental impact.
The result is a retail environment transcending transactional space, offering a multisensory journey where customers “drink their way” through color, light, and personalization. - Inspiration
- The store’s architectural language draws direct inspiration from Montigo’s thermal bottle silhouette, translating its ergonomic curvature into a full-scale spatial experience. The undulating facade and interior layout echo the bottle’s fluid form, creating a tangible connection between product and environment.
