About Muhe Residential Space
Muhe is a residential interior design created for co-living in an older apartment. A former bedroom is opened to connect the kitchen island, dining area, and reading wall, forming a shared axis that supports interaction among the residents and their pet. Sliding partitions let the home shift between privacy and connection, and a sliding television wall adjusts sightlines across the zones. A three-zone bathroom, concealed storage, and clear circulation support daily use. Brushed white oak, soft white tones, and layered lighting create a calm atmosphere.
Lo Hsiao-Li's Muhe Residential Space emerges from contemporary design traditions that privilege material authenticity, spatial clarity, and the quiet luxury of restraint, positioning itself within a broader movement toward residential interiors that reject ornamental excess in favor of refined simplicity and the inherent beauty of natural materials thoughtfully deployed. The design demonstrates sophisticated compositional intelligence through its tripartite organization, balancing the functional demands of contemporary domestic life including media technology, book storage, and display of personal objects against the aesthetic aspiration toward serene, uncluttered spatial experience, the horizontal emphasis created by continuous shelving, aligned cabinetry edges, and the low peninsular element establishes visual rhythm while reinforcing the lateral expansiveness of the space, guiding the eye across the panoramic field and creating a sense of breadth that extends beyond the actual meterage. The chromatic achievement lies in the designer's disciplined palette, the warm blonde wood approaching honey or light maple provides foundational warmth and naturalistic texture, while the soft greige of upper cabinetry offers chromatic breathing room and prevents the wood from overwhelming the composition, the strategic deployment of matte black in track lighting, pendant hardware, and the television screen creates crisp linear accents that anchor the otherwise light-toned palette and provide contemporary graphic punctuation, these deliberate color relationships create a space that feels both warm and fresh, grounded yet luminous. The material vocabulary demonstrates technical facility and attention to detail, the seamless integration of upper cabinetry suggests precision fabrication and installation, the open shelving system displays books, ceramics, and framed images in a carefully curated arrangement that balances visual interest against the risk of clutter, the woven rattan pendants introduce organic texture and craft tradition into an otherwise rectilinear composition, their spherical forms and warm amber glow providing sculptural focal points and human-scale intimacy within the expansive volume. The spatial construction reveals understanding of how contemporary dwellers inhabit residential space, the open plan allows visual and physical flow between functional zones traditionally separated into discrete rooms, the integration of entertainment technology within custom millwork demonstrates how design can accommodate contemporary media consumption while maintaining aesthetic integrity, the visible presence of what appears to be a pet crossing the floor introduces an endearing narrative element that reminds viewers this meticulously composed space serves as backdrop for lived experience, spontaneous movement, and the unpredictable vitality of domestic life. The design invites consideration of how residential interiors might balance competing imperatives: the desire for order against the reality of daily use, the aspiration toward aesthetic purity against the functional requirements of storage and technology integration, the preference for material warmth against the discipline of restraint, suggesting that spaces achieving this equilibrium offer inhabitants the gift of environments that feel simultaneously crafted and effortless, environments that support rather than constrain the rhythms of daily life, environments where aesthetic intention creates not a museum-like untouchability but rather a generous framework within which human activity, personal expression, and domestic ritual can unfold with grace and ease.

- Production Technology
- The spatial design emphasizes rhythm and coherence, integrating the kitchen island, dining table, and reading wall into a continuous shared axis. A sliding TV wall enables flexible sightlines and enhances interaction across zones. Slatted elements extend from the entryway through cabinetry and walls, articulating a light yet orderly visual rhythm. A palette of white oak, soft white, and low-saturation textured finishes—paired with charcoal drapery and layered lighting—creates a serene, refined atmosphere with understated depth and material richness.
- Design Challenge
- As diverse living arrangements among partners, friends, and pets become increasingly common, residential design often remains rooted in the logic of the nuclear family. In response to this gap, the design shifts from functional zoning toward a spatial strategy of openness, sliding visual cores, and integrated interfaces—redefining the rhythms and boundaries of co-living. The home is no longer a static container, but a social unit that supports coexistence, emotional flow, and the recognition of varied ways of living together.

Posted on 2025/04/10 - Operation Flow
- The layout is tailored for the fluid needs of multi-person co-living. An open circulation connects cooking, dining, reading, and rest into a seamless daily flow. The sliding TV wall pivots to serve different zones, adapting to varied living scenarios. A three-zone bathroom enables concurrent use, boosting efficiency, while high-frequency storage is aligned along main pathways for quick, intuitive access. A slatted sliding panel conceals utility cabinets while ensuring ventilation and filtered light—supporting smooth transitions between openness and privacy with spatial clarity.
- Research
- Responding to a co-living lifestyle shared by a couple, friends, and a pet, the design departs from room-count-based layouts to prioritize openness and adaptability. One bedroom is released to create a shared spatial axis. The living area omits a traditional sofa, preserving flexibility, while a sliding TV wall enables multi-zone viewing. A three-zone bathroom supports staggered use to improve efficiency. Slatted elements unify storage, concealment, and visual rhythm. Muted tones and intentional blank space provide a calming, stable environment for high-pressure urban living.
- Inspiration
- Breaking from room-based conventions, this design starts with how people live—redefining space around interaction, openness, and adaptability. Shaped for a multi-person, co-living lifestyle, the home becomes a flexible framework for evolving relationships. Circulation and boundaries are carefully designed to balance connection and independence. As daily rhythms shift, the space adapts—offering a quiet, future-ready model for shared living.
