About Open Field Space Office

Open Field Space is an office interior covering 400 square metres. The layout is based on an inner street concept, which creates a staggered configuration within two rooms of 5.5 metres in height. Office, meeting, entertainment and experiential areas are combined in one flexible environment. Wood finishes shift from light brown to deep chestnut, while metal surfaces move from matte to reflective. Cool and warm light sources alternate to add depth to the colour palette. The design moves beyond traditional functional zoning.

Open Field Space Office by Rong Han emerges from a contemporary tradition of creative industry environments that reject conventional corporate aesthetics in favor of spaces reflecting the imaginative work conducted within them, drawing upon post-industrial design vocabularies that celebrate raw structural honesty while layering vibrant chromatic interventions and curated personal collections that transform the workspace into an expressive manifesto of creative identity. The designer demonstrates sophisticated command of spatial hierarchy through the double-height volume that establishes grandeur and breathing room while the lowered ceiling zone delineates intimate working areas, this vertical articulation allowing natural light to penetrate from the mezzanine windows while maintaining acoustic and visual separation between collaborative and focused work zones. The chromatic strategy reveals particular accomplishment in balancing warm architectural surfaces rendered in terracotta and burnt sienna against cool technological accents of cobalt blue LED illumination, creating a dynamic thermal gradient that energizes the space without overwhelming the senses. Material selections evidence thoughtful juxtaposition between industrial authenticity in the exposed concrete ceiling and refined craft in the timber window frames and pressed-tin ceiling panels, suggesting a temporal dialogue between heritage building fabric and contemporary intervention. The curatorial approach to displayed objects transforms functional workplace into gallery and shrine, with illuminated vitrines presenting figurative collectibles as precious artifacts while larger sculptural elements including the motorcycle and oversized character figure establish focal points that reward exploration. The inclusion of lush plantings introduces biophilic elements that soften the technological emphasis and contribute to occupant wellbeing. What might viewers discover about the relationship between creative work and the environments that nurture it when examining how personal passions and professional practice merge within such deliberately unconventional spaces?

Production Technology
The transition of the wood finish from a light brown to a deep chestnut, along with the shift in the metal elements from a matte to a reflective surface, enhances the color depth of the environment. The adjustment of the lighting color temperature is incorporated. The alternating use of cool and warm light sources adds dynamism and vitality to the overall color palette. This approach delivers a visual experience that is cohesive yet diverse, reconciling with the ambiance of the inner street.
Design Challenge
A collection of team logos was developed in various styles, along with visual elements such as a comic rendition of the team portrait. A critical consideration during the design process was how to seamlessly incorporate these visual designs into the overall space, ensuring they not only emphasize the cultural identity but also align with the overarching aesthetic of the environment. Achieving an equilibrium between spatial arrangement and visual communication was essential.
Project Duration
The project was officially initiated in July 2024 and successfully concluded in February 2025 in Xi an.
Operation Flow
The property was designed with two spacious rooms, each measuring 5.5 meters in height. The designer intended to create a multifunctional experimental area that combines office, entertainment, meeting, and experiential elements within the constraints of the existing space. The initial layout of the property has been transformed by incorporating inner street design, resulting in a staggered configuration that enhances the capacity of the interior space and accommodates a variety of uses.
Research
The variety of spaces and the dynamic configuration of the building often lead individuals to overlook its identity as an office, which aligns perfectly with the objectives set by the team. The vibrant neon cityscape coexists with the warmth of a home. This design not only disrupts the uniformity typically associated with traditional office spaces but also delivers an engaging experience, allowing individuals to appreciate the excitement of creative interactions within the workplace.
Inspiration
The office setting should not be limited to conventional format, particularly for a team focused on spatial design. Their workspace ought to embody diversity and foster innovative thought. The design was inspired from a focus to craft an agile, open, and inclusive environment, with a view to transcending the limitations of traditional functional zoning and embracing a more adaptable design language.
