About Place Of Autumn Green Residential Apartment
Place of Autumn Green is a 316 square metre residential apartment designed as a retirement home in Taiwan. Acoustic performance is treated as a core design element, with thick partition walls and sound guide grooves hidden in the ceiling to support cello practice and music playback. Curved glass screens and grille sliding doors form semi open rooms that shift between an open living area and a private music studio. An emerald green marble wall conceals the television behind a sliding system. Recycled Italian stone is used for the decorative screens.
This residential interior by designer Shi Zhe Luo exemplifies contemporary approaches to domestic space that honor material authenticity while achieving refined aesthetic sophistication through restrained formal vocabulary and careful proportional calibration, situating the work within broader movements toward biophilic design integration, artisanal surface treatment, and the cultivation of sensory richness through tactile variety and chromatic subtlety rather than ornamental excess, the compositional achievement demonstrates mastery of horizontal spatial organization where the dominant stone wall treatment functions simultaneously as architectural envelope and artistic focal element, its modular panel system articulated by slender black mullions creating rhythmic visual intervals that reference both traditional Japanese screen craft and contemporary curtain wall architecture, the textured surfaces themselves exhibiting remarkable material complexity with abstract organic markings suggesting fossilized impressions or natural weathering phenomena rendered through specialized plaster or composite material application that produces authentic depth variation and haptic appeal across each module, the chromatic accomplishment lies in the sophisticated analogous harmony of warm earth tones spanning cream through beige to sienna and taupe, punctuated by sage green accents that provide subtle chromatic relief without disrupting the overall tonal unity, this palette evoking natural landscape references including stone formations, aged wood, autumn foliage, and verdant growth while maintaining contemporary refinement, the integration of architectural elements with furnishing selections demonstrates notable design intelligence where organic sculptural furniture forms provide visual and conceptual counterpoint to the orthogonal architectural geometry, the biomorphic coffee tables with their naturally eroded perimeter contours and cylindrical walnut supports creating dialogue between geometric precision and organic irregularity, material selection throughout celebrates authentic surface qualities with herringbone wood parquet referencing traditional craft while warm honey-toned seating plinths and walnut banding establish rich grain pattern appreciation, the linear recessed ceiling lighting employing diagonal vectors that energize the horizontal emphasis while providing diffused warm illumination that enhances material warmth and creates intimate atmospheric quality appropriate to residential sanctuary, thematic content appears centered on the creation of domestic refuge through material honesty, sensory engagement, and the harmonious integration of natural references within refined contemporary spatial frameworks, the work exploring how textured surfaces, organic forms, and warm earth palettes can cultivate contemplative environments that offer respite from visual overstimulation, the careful curation of objects including publications, ceramic vessels, and delicate branching greenery suggesting attention to the rituals of daily dwelling and the aesthetic dimension of domestic life, potential design references might include the material sensitivity of Japanese tea house traditions where textured walls and natural materials create meditative atmospheres, the organic modernism of mid-century Scandinavian design that integrated biomorphic furniture with natural material palettes, contemporary hospitality design approaches that employ artisanal surface treatments and layered material textures to create memorable spatial character, and the broader movement toward slow design that prioritizes enduring quality, tactile engagement, and environmental connection over transient trends, this interior invites contemplation of how residential environments might serve as sanctuaries that engage multiple senses through material variety, support intimate human gathering through thoughtful furniture arrangement, and cultivate aesthetic appreciation through restrained formal clarity that allows individual material qualities to resonate, how might spaces designed with such attention to textural richness, chromatic subtlety, and organic-geometric dialogue transform daily dwelling into opportunities for sensory mindfulness and aesthetic renewal.

- Unique Properties
- This is a raw residential unit designed as a retirement home. Its uniqueness is in its multi layered approach. The project treats sound as a core design element, seamlessly integrating acoustic strategies into the layout and materials. It translates the imagery of Maple Garden into the home's aesthetics, creating a poetic environment. The layout uses screens and sliding doors to create flexible spaces that are both open and private, adapting to different activities.

- Production Technology
- The design methodology focused on subtraction and integration to create a fluid, continuous living space. Key approaches include using semi open layouts defined by curved glass screens and grille sliding doors. The living room's main wall, made of emerald green marble, conceals the TV behind a sliding system to maintain its sculptural integrity. The design also uses a holistic sound strategy, including wet thick partition walls for insulation and sound guide grooves in the ceiling to absorb echoes, all for optimal music performance.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was to integrate a high performance sound environment for cello practice and audio playback without compromising the open and minimalist aesthetic. This required innovative solutions, such as concealing acoustic engineering within the walls and ceilings. The design also needed to create a flexible space that could be both a serene home and a dedicated music studio, which required a meticulous use of movable screens and doors.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in December 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The design is engineered for flexible and intuitive user interaction. The entire home uses a smart dimming system, allowing residents to easily switch between preset lighting scenarios to match their lifestyle rhythms. The semi open layout with flexible screens and doors allows the owners to transform the space from an open living area to a private music studio with minimal effort. This provides a seamless balance between entertaining and personal use.
- Research
- This project's engineering methodology is defined by its innovative approach to acoustics and sustainability. The use of wet method construction for precisely calculated thick partition walls and sound guide grooves hidden within the ceiling demonstrates a sophisticated approach to sound management. This ensures superior soundproofing without sacrificing usable space. The design team incorporated recycled Italian stone for the decorative screens, significantly reducing the project's carbon footprint. The integrated smart home system also ensures optimal living conditions by controlling humidity and air pressure.
- Inspiration
- The design was inspired by the owners' high standards for daily life and music, as well as the unique landscape of Maple Garden. The motivation was to create a retirement home that blends functionality with poetry. The design translates natural imagery, such as willow like marble walls and water ripple floors, into the interior's aesthetic. This fusion of a personal lifestyle and natural scenery served as the core inspiration for a residence that is both functional and artistic.
