About Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse
Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu is a clubhouse designed for a residential community in Hangzhou, China. The clubhouse covers about 1860 square meters on two floors and serves as a shared social and wellness space. White stone gives the geometry a pure and abstract character, while timber adds warmth to the communal areas. A mortise and tenon screen spans nine meters around the main staircase without fixings, and a brass pendant is made by hand. The lighting grows dimmer toward the spa areas, supporting a calm and quiet atmosphere.
Justin Bridgland and Jaycee Chui's Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse exemplifies a refined approach to contemporary hospitality design that engages with longstanding architectural traditions of material juxtaposition and spatial choreography while achieving a distinctly modern sensibility. The designers appear to have orchestrated a careful dialogue between warm organic surfaces and cool mineral planes, employing vertically ribbed timber paneling in rich walnut tones alongside pale stone cladding that evokes classical architectural heritage. This material conversation extends throughout the double-height volume, where monumental stone columns establish vertical rhythm and structural clarity while cantilevered balconies introduce sweeping curved profiles that soften the geometric rigor with organic gesture. The suspended sculptural installation of overlapping white elliptical forms represents a particularly accomplished intervention, its abstract botanical or cloud-like configuration creating visual levity within the grand scale while directing attention upward through the atrium space. One observes how the seating arrangements employ furniture with elegant bentwood frames and generous upholstery, their curved silhouettes establishing formal correspondence with both the overhead sculpture and the flowing balcony fascias, suggesting a considered design language operating at multiple scales. The lighting design seems to balance diffused ambient illumination with focused accent lighting, creating a luminous atmosphere without harsh contrasts. The warm golden glow visible in the background gallery space, anchored by what appears to be a circular metallic artwork, provides spatial depth and visual destination. The overall composition invites contemplation of how contemporary design practice might honor material authenticity, spatial generosity, and human comfort while achieving environments of quiet sophistication. Viewers may wish to consider how the interplay of scale—from intimate conversation groupings to soaring architectural volume—shapes the experience of refined hospitality.

- Production Technology
- The purity of the geometry is emphasized by the use of white stone, giving an abstract feeling to the composition. Relevant throughout the project is the use of timber, that populates mainly the communal areas, giving warmth to the space. The areas of the spa are kept more pure and ethereal through the use of stone and paint, creating a distance between the visitor and the architecture, to allow to focus on the inner peace. The private areas display an higher amount of decoration and metals.
- Design Challenge
- The control of proportions has been a fundamental part of the design process. All the elements and their geometries create a system that arouses sense of monumentality and purity. The hardest elements to achieve were the mortise-and-tenon structure, that spans 9 meters without making use of any fixing material. The hand-made art pendant in the centre of the staircase has been developed through a rigorous parametric rationalization and development alongside with a local brass craftsman.
- Project Duration
- The project is located in Hangzhou, China.
Completed in 2019. - Operation Flow
- The fruition of the spaces happens starting from the exterior rich landscape. Once entering the clubhouse, the space reveals itself with a strong view to the outside spaces. The monumental staircase, remembrance of Chinese glorious craftsman traditions, leads down to the lower floor, where the lounge and display area are located. The transition to the wellness area is marked by the lighting, getting dimmer and arising a feeling of quietness and contemplation.
- Research
- The clubhouse spaces are an invitation to leave back the stresses of everyday life while enjoying a moment of self-care. The purity of the forms is a strong statement and generates a certain contemplative distance with the visitors. Along with our research on purity and silence, we brought forward an exploration of Chinese traditional crafts, expressed by the mortise-and-tenon structure around the staircase and the pendant installation, joining parametric design to hand-fabrication.
- Inspiration
- We have been inspired by the surrounding calm landscape, to develop an architectural language of purity. Every element of the design has to join a common dialogue of calm serenity. We tried to make the lush landscape resonate inside the spaces through games of transparency and reflections. Chinese traditional craft has also been of major inspiration, through the development of a fully mortise and tenon joinery technique screen around the main staircase and the old brass pendant installation.
