About Ramesh Armchair

Ramesh is an armchair inspired by the poised stance of a gazelle. The chair is composed of two main elements. The rear structure extends from the back legs to the armrests and backrest, forming a continuous arc. The front structure provides stability and is joined with cylindrical wood joints and reinforced rivet connectors. Cup-like armrests and a contoured, segmented backrest support ergonomic comfort. The frame is made of hardwood, shaped by computer controlled milling and refined by hand, while the upholstery is leather.

Sepideh Bayat's Ramesh Armchair engages the enduring conversation between structural expression and sensory comfort that has animated furniture design discourse since the pioneering bentwood experiments of the nineteenth century through the organic modernism of mid-twentieth-century masters and into contemporary parametric craft practices, positioning itself within a lineage that honors material authenticity and celebrates the sculptural potential inherent in functional objects designed for daily human interaction and repose, the compositional achievement of this seating design rests substantially in its resolution of competing formal demands, the cantilevered backrest sweeping upward and outward in a gesture of dynamic movement and generous support while the continuous bent wood frame creates structural integrity through its unbroken loop that simultaneously serves as armrest, rear leg, and primary load-bearing member, this formal solution demonstrating both engineering intelligence and aesthetic refinement as the wood's grain direction follows the stress lines inherent in the cantilever creating visual and structural coherence, the horizontal leather slats introduce a secondary rhythm that provides flexible support and visual warmth, their regular spacing creating a textile-like surface that contrasts productively with the monumental wood elements while the cognac coloration establishes chromatic harmony within the earth-tone palette, the finish quality throughout suggests meticulous attention to surface preparation and coating application with the wood achieving depth and luminosity through what appears to be multiple sealing and polishing stages, thematically the work invites contemplation of materiality and making, celebrating the particular qualities of bent hardwood with its capacity for structural performance and sensuous curvature while honoring leather's traditional role in seating as a durable yet yielding surface that responds to body heat and develops character through use, the design appears to explore questions of presence and lightness, achieving substantial visual mass through the bold backrest gesture while maintaining transparency through the slat construction and open frame that allows visual passage and suggests approachability rather than monumental distance, one might observe resonances with the organic wooden seating explorations of designers working in Northern traditions during the postwar period where plywood lamination and steam-bending techniques enabled new formal possibilities that married craft traditions with industrial production capabilities, equally the work seems to acknowledge contemporary interests in parametric variation and digital fabrication's capacity to achieve complex curves with precision while retaining handcraft finishing sensibilities, the presentation itself with its careful lighting and neutral environment positions the chairs as objects worthy of sustained looking, inviting viewers to consider how functional furniture transcends mere utility to participate in sculptural discourse and how domestic objects carry cultural memory and design heritage forward through thoughtful reinterpretation and material celebration, the viewer might contemplate the relationship between sitting and being held, between the vulnerability of repose and the reassurance of structural embrace that this generous backrest form seems to offer, or reflect upon how design choices in everyday objects shape daily experience and domestic atmosphere through their presence, proportions, and the particular qualities of their surfaces and forms.

Production Technology
Its bold structure conveys a sense of gravity and presence, while its finely sculpted lines soften this assertion, revealing an underlying elegance. The form mirrors the poised stillness of a gazelle, capturing both its muscular endurance and its gentle, fluid movement. The chair is composed of two main elements. The realization of Ramesh required a fusion of advanced digital modeling, traditional woodworking, and precision upholstery craftsmanship. The frame should be constructed from high-quality hardwood, shape with CNC precision and refine by hand to maintain the organic flow of its contours. The leather elements are meticulously selected and should stitch to ensure longevity and luxurious comfort. The connection points are engineered for both visual harmony and durability, seamlessly integrating into the form without disrupting its purity.
Design Challenge
One of the greatest challenges in crafting Ramesh was achieving a structure that maintains its bold, heavy presence while expressing a sense of refined lightness. The seamless transition between the backrest, armrests, and rear legs required meticulous engineering, ensuring that the material thickness and curvature would support weight without compromising visual elegance. The integration of organic, sculptural form with strict ergonomic function demanded a balance between traditional craftsmanship and digital precision. Another challenge lay in ensuring that the chair's two main structural components, the front and rear sections, could be assembled in a way that maintains the illusion of continuity while also allowing for stability and flexibility in production. Through extensive prototyping, the final design achieves a sublime balance of form, function, and artistry.
Project Duration
The project was conceived in Philadelphia, USA and Tabriz, IRAN simultaneously, and developed over an extensive design phase, ensuring precision in materiality, craftsmanship, and ergonomic refinement for constructing phase.
Operation Flow
Designed for contemplation and comfort, Ramesh invites the user into a refined experience of sitting. The carefully sculpted seat cradles the body, while the upward-sweeping backrest subtly encourages proper posture. The arc-like transitions of the frame create a dynamic engagement between user and object, making the act of sitting feel intentional and elevated. The leather components add an element of tactile luxury, allowing the user to fully immerse themselves in the experience of the chair's Timeless form.
Research
The conceptual foundation of Ramesh was built upon the study of biomorphic forms, architectural movement, and high-end craftsmanship. Extensive research into animal biomechanics, particularly the motion and stance of gazelles, informed the chair's overall posture. Additionally, explorations into luxury automotive design, notably the aerodynamic curves of a 1990 Porsche's rear wheel arches, inspired the seamless flow of the chair's form. Materials research emphasized sustainability and longevity, ensuring that the wood and leather used in the chair not only enhance its aesthetic value but also align with ethical craftsmanship. The chair was developed with an understanding of how balance and elegance can coexist in furniture, borrowing principles from both classical and modernist design philosophies.
Inspiration
Inspired by the poised elegance and dynamic stillness of a gazelle, Ramesh is a statement of power, movement, and balance. The design captures the tension between fluidity and solidity, translating the graceful arcs of a gazelle's hind legs into a chair that embodies strength and sophistication. The chair's dual-component structure symbolizes the harmony of opposites, bold yet refined, structured yet flowing, assertive yet inviting. Wood flows into leather, blending nature, craft, and luxury.
