About Tubedex Bus Station
Tubedex is a bus stop designed for post-industrial cities. The form is inspired by industrial pipes and is expressed through deconstructed circular tube elements. Brushed stainless steel is the main material, joined by cast connectors and screws. Solar panels above the roof supply energy, while LED lights behind frosted glass illuminate the waiting area. An interactive screen in bold red shows real-time information such as time, weather and the expected bus load rate. The aim is to make bus service information clearer and easier to read.
Wenkai Xue's Tubedex Bus Station engages the evolving discourse surrounding public infrastructure as designed experience, positioning functional street furniture within broader conversations about civic dignity, universal accessibility, and the aesthetic elevation of everyday urban encounters that millions of transit users navigate daily, the work appearing to draw upon rationalist design traditions wherein structural logic becomes visible poetry, each element serving clear functional purpose while contributing to overall formal coherence reminiscent of mid-century Scandinavian design philosophy that rejected superfluous ornament in favor of material honesty and ergonomic refinement, the color strategy demonstrates sophisticated restraint as the predominantly neutral gray palette establishes calm visual field while concentrated scarlet red accents function as cognitive landmarks guiding user attention toward critical wayfinding information, this chromatic hierarchy reflecting contemporary understanding of environmental psychology and information design principles wherein high-contrast focal points against neutral backgrounds optimize rapid information processing particularly valuable in transit contexts where users often navigate while distracted or hurried, the structural system reveals elegant engineering economy as slender circular-section verticals demonstrate tensile efficiency while the curved overhead supports distribute canopy loads through geometric rather than mass-based strategies, the shelter's formal vocabulary speaking to manufacturing considerations as uniform tube diameters and repeated connection details suggest modular production enabling cost-effective fabrication and simplified maintenance protocols essential for municipal infrastructure deployed across multiple sites, the integration of informational displays directly into the shelter architecture rather than as afterthought additions demonstrates holistic design thinking wherein wayfinding becomes architecturally embedded rather than applied graphics, the transit map panel with its soft pastel route coding and clear hierarchical typography exemplifies contemporary cartographic design that must balance information density with instantaneous legibility, the horizontal bench element extending along the shelter's length provides generous seating capacity while its low profile maintains visual transparency preserving sightlines important for safety and urban spatial flow, material selections suggesting durability considerations as matte powder-coated finishes resist visible weathering while glossy informational panels facilitate cleaning, the canopy's subtle longitudinal ridging perhaps indicating structural ribs that stiffen the spanning element against wind loads or suggesting textile-inspired formal language that introduces organic texture to otherwise industrial palette, the gentle terminal curve where canopy meets support demonstrates attention to detail as this refinement softens what could be harsh perpendicular intersection while potentially serving functional purpose of directing water runoff, the freestanding information pylon operating as satellite element extends the shelter's informational reach serving passengers who may be scanning for their route from distance, the design's overall restraint and systematic logic inviting consideration of public space as designed commons where infrastructure serves not merely functional necessity but expresses collective values regarding accessibility, clarity, dignity, and the recognition that transit users deserve environments designed with same care afforded private commercial spaces, how does this shelter suggest that design excellence in public infrastructure constitutes not luxury but essential investment in urban quality of life and the daily experiences of diverse populations navigating shared civic space?

- Unique Properties
- Tubedex, a new form of bus station, designed for post-industrial cities. Its uniqueness lies in the deconstructed expression of industrial circular tube elements in its appearance, trying to capture the extension and elegance of its shape semantics. The innovative eye-catching and beautiful interactive interface brings more transparent bus operation information to the public and gives more intuitive visual expression of information. Bring more innovative attempts to urban public facilities.

- Production Technology
- We chose brushed stainless steel as the main material of Tubedex, which is strong and reliable, but also brings the unique texture of the metal reflected from different angles. Strong solar panels above the ceiling provide energy for the products, while a combination of luminous leds and frosted glass provide light for the citizens below. The whole product is divided into universal body parts and cast connectors and combined with screws to find a balance between economy and aesthetics.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge of our design is that we cannot find a reasonable way in it’s appearance which is satisfying in function at the beginning. After a certain number of sketching and discussing of our project, we finally find the proper selection which achieves the desired effect.
- Project Duration
- The project started in February 2025 in LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and finished in March 2025 in National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA.
- Operation Flow
- Tubedex's interactive interface is divided into standard screen and 16:9 screen. The standard provides real-time data such as time, weather and full load rate. According to the passenger density data of each vehicle and passenger data of each platform, the data is counted and sorted under the strategy of smart city, and the expected arrival full load rate is finally calculated for visual presentation. The 16:9 screen combines the first two. Information classification is sorted according to the importance of the user journey, achieving a complete logic from user needs to information transfer to entity interaction.
- Research
- As the concept of smart cities continues to gain popularity, the Internet of Things has changed People's Daily lives. At present, major cities are actively promoting the wisdom of public transport systems, and improving the limitations of existing public transport systems has been developing towards universality. The existing bus service system has several problems waiting to be solved, such as rigid information transmission, opacity, and one-way interaction. The design team decided to re-explore the interactive value of bus stations in public space from the perspective of informatization, wisdom and art. That's the beginning of Tubedex.
- Inspiration
- The shape of Tubedex is inspired by the industrial pipes that can be seen everywhere in post-industrial cities. Inspired by the epitome of this urban cultural symbol, we try to preserve the traces and memories of industrial city clusters and try to eliminate the bad stereotypes inherent in traditional industrial cities. The main color of the interactive interface is bold red, ensuring recognition while conforming to the color inspiration of bravery, aggressiveness and efficiency.
