About Ripple of Knowledge Library

Ripple of Knowledge is a school library interior located in Taipei City. The concept of ripples serves as the central theme of the design. Curved elements define the different zones, while low cabinets work as storage, seating and space dividers, keeping the space open and visually continuous. Curved cabinets and flowing light strips guide circulation. A curved counter faces the main entrance at the center, so the librarian can oversee all areas. A corner with long curved bookshelves, a projector and a screen forms a stage for teaching and events.

Ripple of Knowledge Library by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan engages the contemporary discourse surrounding public knowledge institutions and their evolving role within communities, demonstrating how spatial design can embody values of openness, accessibility, democratic learning, and the fluid circulation of information across both analog and digital platforms within a single coherent architectural gesture. Situated within the lineage of library design that extends from the grand reading rooms of nineteenth-century civic monuments through the functionalist modernism of mid-twentieth-century public libraries to the flexible, technology-integrated learning commons emerging in recent decades, this project participates in conversations about how physical space can facilitate multiple modes of engagement with knowledge—from solitary contemplative reading to collaborative discovery, from browsing physical collections to accessing digital resources, from structured research to serendipitous encounter. The design demonstrates considerable compositional sophistication in its handling of spatial flow and zoning, employing the curved reception desk as both functional threshold and sculptural gesture that introduces organic fluidity into an otherwise orthogonally organized environment, establishing a welcoming entry sequence that metaphorically suggests the spreading ripples of knowledge dissemination referenced in the project title. The chromatic achievement lies in the restrained yet evocative palette that employs cool blues overhead to create a sense of expansive calm and contemplative atmosphere traditionally associated with sky and water, while warm timber tones ground users in material warmth and tactile connection, a vertical color temperature gradient that subtly reinforces the relationship between aspiration and embodiment, thought and physicality, the ethereal realm of ideas and the grounded reality of human learning. Technical facility appears in the integration of exposed structural and mechanical systems within the ceiling plane, treating infrastructure as honest architectural expression rather than concealing it, a strategy that reads as both economical and aesthetically forthright, aligned with contemporary values of transparency and material authenticity. The modular shelving system displays thoughtful proportioning, maintaining waist-height horizontal emphasis that preserves visual connectivity across the space, preventing the oppressive enclosure that floor-to-ceiling stacks can create, instead fostering a sense of democratic openness where knowledge resources remain visible and accessible without physical or psychological barrier. The fenestration strategy deserves particular note, positioning the window band at upper wall level to introduce abundant natural illumination and maintain visual connection to the surrounding landscape while preserving lower wall surfaces for functional program and creating a horizon line that directs attention outward and upward, linking interior sanctuary to exterior natural cycles and seasonal transformation. The work invites contemplation of how physical environments for learning might balance the competing demands of quietude and vitality, individual focus and communal gathering, permanence and flexibility, the honoring of traditional book culture and the integration of evolving digital technologies, and ultimately how spatial design itself can become pedagogical, teaching through material choices, proportional relationships, and organizational logic that information flows like water, knowledge ripples outward from centers of inquiry, and learning spaces should welcome all seekers with equal grace. One might observe how the title's aqueous metaphor finds expression not only in the wavelike desk form but in the overall spatial fluidity, the sense of unobstructed circulation, the visual transparency, and the chromatic reference to water and sky, inviting reflection on libraries as reservoirs from which knowledge flows outward in concentric circles of influence, touching reader after reader in ever-widening patterns of understanding and discovery.

Unique Properties
The library is an essential space for sparking children's curiosity and enriching their imagination. Here, children absorb knowledge through reading, embarking on an infinite journey of thought and discovery. As times evolve, modern school libraries are no longer just repositories for books; they have transformed into dynamic spaces for creativity and diverse learning experiences.
Dimensions & Packaging
1.Work Area:
The curved counter is positioned directly opposite the main entrance and located centrally within the overall space. This setup allows the librarian to oversee all areas of the library effectively, ensuring smooth management and flexibility.
Stage Area:
The library’s corner is transformed into a stage area by using long curved bookshelves along with a projector and screen. This arrangement not only makes the library more versatile but also serves as a space for teaching and events, enhancing its role as a dynamic learning environment.
Information Area:
Tablets are provided for students to access library catalogs. These devices also serve as supplementary teaching tools during class, integrating technology into the learning process.

Production Technology
The space is constructed with pre-fabricated shelf at the factory and finished with on-site carpentry.
Design Challenge
We envision the Ripple of Knowledge not only as a space for focused reading but also as a hub for sparking children's curiosity, inspiring creativity, and broadening their horizons. Here, every child can experience the power of knowledge, set ripples in motion, and carry this energy into the wider world.
Project Duration
The project started in March 2024 in Taipei City and completed in September 2024
Operation Flow
Bookend A - Ripple
Inspired by the spatial concept of "ripple," this bookend is made of water droplet-shaped, translucent acrylic engraved with two types of concentric ripples. When two bookends overlap, they create a complete ripple effect, symbolizing the spread of knowledge.

Bookend B - Dragon Ball
The "Dragon Ball" bookend represents the imagery of a "dragon" and also symbolizes Longshan Elementary School. The combination of the dragon ball with the cloud symbolizes how reading can elevate and inspire individuals, just like riding the "Magic Cloud" to soar through the skies.
Research
Throughout their learning and growth, children go through a continuous cycle of listening, reading, absorbing, and speaking. Knowledge flows like droplets of water falling into the lake of their minds, creating ripples that spread outward. When these ripples meet, they generate new energy, ultimately converging into a powerful force that can influence themselves and the world around them.
Inspiration
In terms of spatial design, the concept of ripples serves as the central theme. Curved elements are used to define different zones, while low-height cabinets function as storage, seating, and space dividers, maintaining a sense of openness and visual continuity. The curved cabinets and flowing light strips create a natural, fluid circulation path, establishing an airy and relaxed rhythm within the space.
