About Serene Moon Residence

Serene Moon is a residential interior design completed in Taiwan in 2023. The layout is open plan, so the study, living room and dining area are visible from the main entrance. The study is enclosed with Moru glass set in a white iron frame, which keeps the area light and transparent, and it can serve as a guest room or a quiet workspace. A hidden door near the dining area preserves privacy while keeping the wall surface continuous. Reclaimed railway wood is used in the entryway, and a hand-painted gradient wall recalls distant mountain ranges.

Serene Moon Residence represents a contemporary residential interior achievement that emerges from East Asian design philosophies emphasizing spatial clarity, material restraint, and the cultivation of tranquility within domestic environments, drawing upon traditions that value negative space as active compositional element and honor natural materials through minimal intervention, the design demonstrates sophisticated command of neutral chromatic relationships where warm wood tones dialogue with cool gray surfaces and soft whites to create atmospheric cohesion without chromatic distraction, the compositional intelligence evident in how distinct functional zones—culinary preparation, communal dining, and individual repose—achieve definition through subtle architectural gestures rather than divisive barriers, maintaining visual and experiential continuity across the open-plan envelope, the material palette exhibits disciplined selectivity with honey-toned wood flooring providing organic warmth and textural richness, dove-gray paneled surfaces offering serene backdrop neutrality, and blonde wood furnishings introducing sculptural presence through their refined proportions and visible grain character, lighting strategy integrates ambient natural daylight admission through generous glazing with carefully positioned artificial sources including concealed linear fixtures that wash surfaces with gentle illumination and a sculptural pendant that provides functional task lighting while serving as focal element above the dining table, the handleless cabinetry and minimal hardware throughout signal contemporary sensibility while the organic botanical arrangements in ceramic vessels introduce living natural elements that soften geometric precision, furniture selection demonstrates aesthetic coherence with mid-century inspired forms whose tapered legs and organic contours reference design heritage emphasizing craft, proportion, and human scale, the juxtaposition of continuous bench seating with individual chairs around the dining table suggests flexible social configurations accommodating both intimate meals and larger gatherings, spatial proportions establish generous scale that prevents the neutral palette from registering as austere, instead creating breathing room that supports contemplative inhabitation, the threshold column serves dual function as structural necessity and compositional anchor establishing visual weight that balances the horizontal expanse, surface treatments favor matte finishes that absorb rather than reflect light maintaining atmospheric softness, the integration of floor-to-ceiling glazing dissolves interior-exterior boundaries inviting natural light deep into the plan while framing views that extend spatial perception, this residential environment invites consideration of how restrained design vocabularies paradoxically create richness through careful attention to proportion, material character, light quality, and the choreography of daily domestic rituals, how spatial generosity and minimal ornamentation cultivate psychological ease, and how the integration of natural elements within geometric frameworks honors both human rationality and organic connection, the work exemplifies contemporary residential design movements that privilege tranquility, material honesty, and the creation of environments supporting mindful inhabitation rather than ostentatious display.

Unique Properties
The project stands out for its meticulous attention to detail. A key feature is the versatile study design, using Moru glass and a white iron frame for a light, transparent look. The study can adapt to various functions, from a guest room to a tranquil workspace, offering a sense of calm and belonging. The interpretation of wabi-sabi is also prominent, with discarded railway wood repurposed in the entryway, and a hand-painted gradient wall resembling mountain ranges. These elements blend nature and craftsmanship, creating a harmonious, transcendent space.
Dimensions & Packaging
The layout centers around an open-plan design, offering an expansive view upon entering the main door. The study, living room, and dining area are all visible, fostering seamless interaction among family members and creating a warm, connected home atmosphere. Near the dining area, a hidden door integrates seamlessly into the wall design, preserving the visual cohesion of the space while ensuring privacy. This thoughtful approach achieves a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics, enhancing the overall flow and feel of the home.

Production Technology
The project blends special paint, glass, wood, laminate flooring, and iron to embody natural simplicity and functional aesthetics. The light color palette creates a soft, airy atmosphere while highlighting the natural textures of the wood. Glass diffuses natural light, casting it onto stone-like painted walls, evoking the beauty of morning mist over mountains. Iron and laminated flooring balance visual appeal with practicality, offering modernity and durability. The space is brought to life with dynamic, intricate details that enhance its serene yet vibrant essence.
Design Challenge
The project, made of natural materials, posed challenges during planning, particularly with ceiling beams. Larger beams could create visual pressure, affecting comfort. To address this, the designer used light to soften the beams, creating a more open, unobstructed ambiance through carefully placed lighting and shadow effects. Additionally, the stone-pattern coating required several adjustments to its color and texture to achieve a layered, natural look, enhancing both the aesthetic and tactile experience of the space.
Project Duration
The project finished in April 2023 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
Throughout the project, the homeowner deeply appreciated the designer's professionalism and dedication, building a strong foundation of trust. As the project progressed, the homeowner was thrilled to see their 'dream home' evolve from blueprint to reality. Upon completion, they admired the designer's creativity and execution, especially the natural warmth and harmonious ambiance of the space. The thoughtful color coordination, material selection, and seamless flow all contributed to a peaceful, welcoming environment where the family found a true sense of belonging.
Research
'Serene Moon' embodies a harmonious balance of colors and tranquility, reflecting the homeowner's desire for a pure, comfortable lifestyle. Combining Japanese wabi-sabi with Scandinavian minimalism, the design creates a serene, cozy space. The light-toned palette, interplay of wood, and natural light foster warmth. The versatile study, with moru glass and ironwork, seamlessly integrates into the open-plan space. Hidden doors preserve privacy while maintaining visual flow. Every material choice, from reclaimed wood to hand-painted walls, speaks to authenticity and depth.
Inspiration
Inspired by Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics and Scandinavian minimalist design, the space embodies a warm Japandi home. The homeowner seeks a serene, understated atmosphere, prioritizing functionality and practicality. The designer incorporated large expanses of stone and wood, highlighting the authentic textures of natural materials in line with wabi-sabi's reverence for time and nature. Soft Nordic tones were introduced as accents, creating a tranquil and inviting space that fosters relaxation and connection with the natural world.
