About Shanghai Wzt Aristo Pavilion Interior Design
Shanghai Wzt Aristo Pavilion is a cultural exhibition interior covering 600 square meters in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The design promotes traditional Chinese culture and draws on the Huizhou architecture of the Jiangnan region in China. Beams and columns, once purely load bearing, are reused and displayed as central elements of the interior. Column bases are carved with Huizhou stone carving techniques, showing plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum as the four seasons. A minimalist long table with transparent acrylic panels joins modern and traditional elements.
Liang Wei's Shanghai Wzt Aristo Pavilion Interior Design presents a compelling meditation on temporal dialogue, where the substantial presence of reclaimed or historically referenced timber architecture establishes an envelope of cultural memory within which contemporary spatial practices unfold with elegant restraint, the work suggesting affinities with the growing movement toward heritage-conscious contemporary design that seeks neither nostalgic recreation nor dismissive modernization but rather a thoughtful conversation between epochs, the monumental wooden framework with its traditional bracket system and carved embellishments speaks to centuries of refined carpentry tradition, its warm presence softened by age into a patina that carries the quiet authority of accumulated time, against this ancestral backdrop the designer has introduced furnishings of stark contemporary simplicity, the low black tables with their mirror-like surfaces creating geometric counterpoint to the organic timber forms while the soft gray cushions arranged in ceremonial rows invite communal gathering in modes that honor traditional practices of floor-seated contemplation whether for tea ceremony, scholarly exchange, or meditative practice, the chromatic strategy demonstrates remarkable sophistication in its calibration of warm wood tones against cool neutrals, punctuated by the culturally resonant vermillion and gold of the calligraphic inscriptions that serve as both spiritual touchstone and visual terminus, the spatial organization along a clear central axis creates a processional quality, drawing visitors through the timber threshold toward the altar arrangement in a journey that the architecture choreographs with ceremonial deliberation, the work achieves that rare quality of feeling simultaneously rooted in deep tradition and entirely of its moment, inviting consideration of how contemporary spatial practice might honor ancestral wisdom while serving present needs, what forms of gathering and contemplation does such a space make possible that purely modern environments cannot?

- Unique Properties
- The interior design of Aristo Mansion, committed to promoting the exchange of traditional Chinese culture, distinguishes itself from the conventional neo-Chinese design style. The project exhibits beams and columns, which are integral load-bearing structures in traditional Chinese architecture, as part of the interior design. This not only embodies the structural aesthetics of Chinese architecture but also ensures the utility of the space. Additionally, it accents the harmonious integration of the functionality of the structure with its ornamental aspects.
- Dimensions & Packaging

- Production Technology
- To restore the original beam and column structure interiorly, the project reuses components. The column bases are intricately carved using Huizhou stone carving techniques, symbolizing the alternating of four seasons represented by Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum. The desktop crafted from transparent acrylic panels delivers a visually appealing experience where modern and traditional spaces reflect and complement each other.
- Design Challenge
- Making an accurate trade-off between modernity and tradition, and achieving a harmonious coexistence without conflict, poses a great challenge in the field of design. The minimalist long table and its accompanying cushions seamlessly integrate modern elements. The minimalist design language not only reconciles with modern aesthetics, but also upholds the continuity of blending to the traditional environment without surprise.
- Project Duration
- At the entrance of the architectural space, the hanging wall structure, a sort of suspended partition, only unveils a rocky landscape and atomized water beneath the suspended interface. Actually a pine tree is concealed behind this hanging wall which holds great significance in Chinese culture as a symbol of perseverance, nobility and non-corruption. Through the clever installation of this pine tree, it metaphorically embodies the traditional Chinese virtue of a "gentleman" characterized by modesty and reservation.
- Operation Flow
- The project kicked off on March 2021 in Xuhui District, Shanghai, and is scheduled to be finalized and put into operation by September 2021.

- Inspiration
- The project is inspired from the essence of ancient architecture in the Jiangnan region of China, particularly the architectural style of Huizhou. This style has drastically influenced the conceptualization of the project. The design team extensively studied the core components of Huizhou architecture, such as column bases and wax gourd beams, along with other iconic structural elements. This enables them to link traditional with modern design contexts.
