About SkinAI Skin Analyzer
SkinAI is a browser based skin analysis tool for desktop and mobile devices. Users answer a short set of skin related questions and take a guided face photo. Machine learning then evaluates six key skin concerns and returns a health score for each concern. A personalized report is created, along with product recommendations that can be explored or purchased directly. The interface is responsive and follows a mobile first approach, guiding each user step by step with few steps and instant results.
Melisa Aksun's SkinAI Skin Analyzer emerges at the intersection of digital health technology and user-centered interface design, representing a sophisticated contribution to the rapidly evolving beauty technology sector where personalized wellness tools increasingly empower consumers with professional-grade analysis previously accessible only through clinical consultation. This interface accomplishes the complex task of translating dermatological assessment into immediately comprehensible visual language, employing color-coded facial mapping that transforms abstract diagnostic data into intuitive spatial information, the peachy coral, golden yellow, and violet zones distributed across the subject's face creating an accessible visual vocabulary that requires no specialized training to interpret. The compositional achievement lies in the interface's successful balance between informational density and visual clarity, the left-side portrait analysis panel providing immediate diagnostic feedback while the right-side recommendation system seamlessly integrates e-commerce functionality, suggesting that Aksun has thoughtfully considered the complete user journey from analysis through product discovery to purchase decision. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates restraint and purpose, the interface eschewing the garish oversaturation that often plagues health technology applications in favor of a harmonious palette of muted corals, soft violets, sage greens, and neutral grounds that feel both contemporary and calming, appropriate for an application addressing personal appearance concerns where user emotional comfort proves as important as technical accuracy. Technical merit appears consistently throughout the multi-device presentation, the responsive design maintaining visual coherence and functional parity across the laptop's expansive screen real estate and the smartphone's constrained vertical format, demonstrating adaptive layout intelligence rather than mere content scaling. The product recommendation cards exemplify thoughtful component design, each containing sufficient information for informed decision-making while maintaining visual lightness through generous negative space, clean product photography, and clearly hierarchized typography that guides attention from product name through descriptive text to category tags and pricing without creating visual congestion. The interface appears to explore themes of transparency, empowerment, and personalization within wellness technology, the visible diagnostic process demystifying skin analysis while the customized product recommendations acknowledge individual variability, moving beyond one-size-fits-all approaches toward genuinely responsive systems that adapt to user-specific conditions. One observes potential references to contemporary data visualization practices, particularly in healthcare contexts where complex information must be rendered comprehensible to non-specialist audiences, the color overlay methodology sharing conceptual DNA with medical imaging presentations while maintaining accessibility for consumer use. The work invites consideration of how design mediation shapes our relationship with personal health information, how interface aesthetics can reduce anxiety around appearance concerns, and how thoughtfully crafted digital tools might democratize access to sophisticated analysis while maintaining the warmth and encouragement traditionally associated with human consultation, asking viewers to contemplate what it means when technology becomes not merely functional but genuinely supportive of individual wellness journeys.

- Production Technology
- I used Figma for design all interfaces, complemented by user testing via Miro and Figjam. Visual assets were generated with AI tools using specific prompts to ensure alignment with the project concept. High fidelity visuals were finalized in Photoshop, prioritizing a polished, user friendly design.
- Design Challenge
- Balancing advanced AI functionality with an intuitive design was the primary challenge. Ensuring inclusivity for diverse skin tones required sourcing varied datasets and refining the visual output. Iterative usability testing and a focus on responsive design helped overcome technical and user centered challenges.
- Project Duration
- The project started in February 2024 in Istanbul and was finalized in May 2024. Initial research and prototyping phases were conducted remotely, leveraging digital collaboration tools. Key milestones included usability testing, visual refinement, and AI integration, which contributed to the project success.
- Operation Flow
- The design simplifies the skin analysis process through a user-friendly interface that guides the audience step by step. Users answer a brief set of questions and upload a selfie, allowing the tool to analyze their skin conditions and generate a personalized report. The system ensures ease of use with minimal steps, intuitive navigation, and instant results, fostering trust and emotional engagement with its precise and relatable insights.
- Research
- My research began with understanding the real needs and frustrations of users when it comes to skin analysis tools. I aimed to create a design that was not only technologically advanced but also approachable and easy to use. I conducted user surveys, interviewed industry experts, and analyzed competitors to gain a comprehensive perspective. These efforts helped me identify key areas to focus on, such as interface usability, visual clarity, and accessibility. The insights I gathered shaped every stage of my iterative design process, ensuring the final product met both user expectations and functional requirements.
- Inspiration
- Skin AI was inspired by the need to help individuals better understand and improve their skin health. The concept emerged from the idea that personalized analyses focused on specific skin concerns could simplify users' journeys toward the right products. Leveraging the broad accessibility of mobile devices, the tool aims to offer an easy-to-use solution available anywhere, at any time.
