About Spring Breeze Office Space
Spring Breeze is an office space in Kunming, Yunnan, China. The project is the renovation of a single-family steel-structured building with an indoor area of 1000 square meters. A wooden hanging house was built inside the original structure with traditional techniques, using tenon and mortise joints without nails. Two rows of columns and beams support the suspended rooms and corridors. A double-wall design controls the sunlight entering the work area through the glass facade. The wooden house forms a visual contrast with the steel building.
Spring Breeze Office Space by Qingtao Ji exemplifies a distinctive approach to commercial interior architecture that elevates the transitional corridor from mere circulation necessity to an experience of spatial poetry, demonstrating how contemporary design practitioners working within Asian aesthetic traditions continue to reimagine the relationship between movement, materiality, and atmospheric presence. The work appears to draw upon longstanding cultural values that honor threshold experiences and the meditative potential of passage, transforming what might conventionally serve as purely functional connection between programmatic zones into an opportunity for contemplation and sensory engagement. The technical achievement evident in the timber batten system suggests extraordinary precision in fabrication and installation, with each vertical element maintaining consistent proportional relationships while collectively describing a gentle curve that introduces organic dynamism into the geometric framework. The two translucent columns function as the compositional and luminous heart of the design, their material selection likely involving engineered stone or resin compounds capable of transmitting soft diffused light while maintaining structural presence, crowned with brushed brass rings that provide chromatic accent and visual termination. The color strategy demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how warm neutral tones create psychological welcome and perceptual expansion within contained architectural volumes. The floor material selection establishes visual continuity while the perpendicular orientation of planks to the primary movement axis subtly accelerates perceived progression through the space. One might observe how the design achieves its effects through restraint rather than assertion, allowing material qualities and light behavior to generate atmosphere without recourse to decorative elaboration. Viewers may wish to consider how such transitional spaces shape daily experience within working environments and how architectural attention to passage might influence the quality of attention brought to the destinations such corridors connect.
