About Tabli Coffee Machine

Tabli is a new Lavazza system and represents a revolution in the world of single serve coffee. While capsule machines are extremely convenient and offer a great taste experience with guaranteed consistent quality, they also have a significant environmental impact. For this reason, Lavazza developed a completely capsule free system. A coffee tab without capsule. No aluminium. No plastic. No coating. Just ground coffee.

Florian Seidl's Tabli Coffee Machine exemplifies the contemporary evolution of domestic beverage appliances toward objects that transcend mere utility to become meaningful elements within the curated home environment. This award-winning design emerges from a design philosophy that recognizes the coffee ritual as a daily moment of contemplation and sensory pleasure deserving of thoughtfully crafted tools. The formal language demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how curvilinear volumes can communicate both approachability and precision, the sweeping arc from control panel through brewing chamber suggesting fluid movement while the vertical reservoir provides stabilizing visual counterpoint. Material selection reveals deliberate consideration of tactile and visual experience, where the warm rose-gold metallic surface introduces chromatic warmth typically associated with precious metals and artisanal craft, while the charcoal polymer body grounds the composition in contemporary technological confidence. The transparency of the water reservoir serves dual purposes, providing practical visibility of water levels while introducing lightness and depth to the overall form. Technical execution demonstrates refined attention to surface transitions, with radii and fillets calibrated to create continuous visual flow rather than abrupt geometric intersections. The control interface exemplifies restraint, three clearly delineated functions presented through minimal iconography suggesting an interaction philosophy that prioritizes intuitive use over feature complexity. The perforated drip platform introduces geometric texture that acknowledges the machine's functional requirements while contributing to the overall aesthetic vocabulary. Within the broader context of kitchen appliance design, this work participates in an ongoing conversation about elevating everyday objects to objects worthy of affection and display. How might the presence of such thoughtfully designed tools transform our relationship with daily domestic rituals?

Design Challenge
Tabli is a completely new system and required a lot of technical development on multiple levels.
Project Duration
The project was designed in Turin, Italy. The complete process to develop this new system from initial concept to final product took about five years.
Operation Flow
To prepare a coffee, a tab is inserted into the machine, which was specifically designed by Lavazzas own in-house design team. The design and user experience of the appliance appropriately express the novelty that this system represents on the market. The slider with integrated UI is a new and innovative solution. A fluid and simple gesture reveals the insertion area. Once closed, the preparation is selected, and the machine does the rest. The pleasure of a perfectly prepared coffee remains.
Research
Development process through conceptual and formal research, 3D modelling, physical mock-ups, prototyping.
Inspiration
Tabli is a blend of research and design, unleashing aroma, colour, and flavour of coffee for a complete sensory experience. The machine is composed of several different volumes. A solid main body and a big external water tank. The slider, vaguely resembling a coffee bean, also integrates the UI. Designed with love, many aspects came together to create a new, innovative and sustainable system. All elements, the name, packaging, machine, and accessories, form a coherent whole.
