About Tsubomiya 3rd Osteopathic Clinic

Tsubomiya 3rd is an osteopathic clinic located in the business district of Osaka, Japan. The interior reinterprets the calm atmosphere of a traditional Japanese ryokan in a contemporary way. A restrained palette of white, gray, and black is warmed by timber doors and delicate wooden latticework. Soft indirect lighting, subtle incense, and quiet music support a tranquil mood. Four private treatment rooms are kept dimmer than the entrance and corridors. The space covers 66.5 square meters and aims to ease both physical and mental tension.

SHUNSUKE OHE's Tsubomiya 3rd Osteopathic Clinic emerges from contemporary healthcare spatial design practices that increasingly recognize the profound influence of environmental quality on therapeutic outcomes and patient well-being, positioning this reception environment within broader cultural movements toward wellness-centered architecture where material choices, lighting orchestration, and spatial proportion serve not merely functional requirements but contribute actively to psychological comfort and physiological ease. The designer demonstrates notable compositional sophistication through the strategic deployment of bilateral symmetry as organizational armature while introducing subtle asymmetrical elements that prevent static rigidity, most evident in the reception desk whose centered position anchors the space yet whose material and lighting treatment creates dynamic visual interest through dramatic tonal contrast and the illusion of weightless suspension achieved via concealed linear illumination casting warm bronze luminescence upward from the desk's base plane. Technical accomplishment manifests particularly in the lighting design, which layers multiple sources and intensities to produce environmental illumination that reads as simultaneously functional and atmospheric, avoiding the clinical harshness often associated with medical environments while maintaining adequate task visibility, the warm color temperature selections throughout suggesting deliberate psychological intention to create associations with natural phenomena such as sunset, firelight, or dawn rather than institutional fluorescence. Material selection reveals careful curation balancing organic warmth through generous timber application in ceiling planes and vertical screening elements with refined contemporary sensibility expressed through smooth stone surfaces and metallic accents, this material dialogue perhaps suggesting the integration of natural therapeutic traditions with modern professional practice that characterizes contemporary osteopathic medicine. The vertical timber slat screen at right deserves particular attention as a passage of notable accomplishment, introducing rhythmic visual texture, partial spatial division without creating complete enclosure, opportunities for shadow play as light filters through the linear intervals, and materiality that softens the otherwise crisp geometric composition, this element potentially referencing vernacular screening traditions found across architectural cultures where privacy, light modulation, and decorative effect combine in functional lattice systems. The background wall niche, subtly illuminated and displaying vertical text characters, creates focal terminus and cultural specificity while the flanking vertical light strips provide gentle wash illumination that emphasizes the alcove's recessed geometry, this compositional device directing visual attention while creating spatial layering and suggested depth beyond the reception zone. Floor materiality transitions from cool-toned veined stone in circulation zones to darker textured surface at right, this material shift potentially delineating functional territories while contributing textural variety to the spatial experience. The lowered timber ceiling plane performs multiple roles simultaneously, establishing human-scaled intimacy within what might be a taller structural volume, providing continuous material warmth overhead, creating linear directional emphasis through plank orientation, and serving as substrate for the rhythmic timber batten intervals and recessed lighting fixtures that articulate the overhead plane. One might observe how this spatial composition negotiates the often-challenging requirement in healthcare environments to project both professional credibility and approachable warmth, achieving this balance through material choices that feel simultaneously natural and refined, lighting that reads as both adequate and atmospheric, and geometric organization that conveys order without austerity. The space invites consideration of how architectural environments communicate institutional values and therapeutic philosophies through purely spatial and material means, how the selection of warm timber over cold metal or stone, indirect glowing light over direct clinical illumination, and human-scaled proportions over monumental volumes collectively construct an experiential narrative about care, attention, craft, and the integration of body-centered healing practices within contemporary professional contexts, encouraging viewers to contemplate the subtle yet significant ways built environments shape our psychological states and bodily comfort even before any explicit therapeutic intervention occurs.

Design Challenge
Many chiropractic clinics in Japan tend to be functional, sterile, and minimalist spaces. However, this project redefines the clinic not merely as a place to adjust the body, but as a space to heal the mind as well. Designed based on a clear concept, this space possesses such an otherworldly quality that, at first glance, it does not appear to be a clinic, surprising and moving visitors who arrive unaware of its true nature.
Project Duration
Project Duration : From June 2025 to July 2025 Project location : Osaka(Japan)
Operation Flow
All four treatment rooms are private, with lighting kept lower than in the entrance and corridors. In these dim, tranquil spaces, the subtle scent of incense and traditional Japanese music create an experience that extends beyond treatment alone, offering deep restoration for both body and mind. The design is defined by its ability not only to relieve physical fatigue, but also to gently ease mental tension.
Research
It is rare for a chiropractic clinic to embody the atmosphere of a high end Japanese ryokan with such authenticity. Going beyond treatment alone, this clinic offers an experience shaped by Japanese aesthetic sensibility and quiet hospitality. In the heart of the city, it stands as a distinctive healing space that leaves visitors with a deep sense of calm and a lasting impression.
Inspiration
Located in Osaka’s business district, this clinic was conceived as a serene, high quality space reminiscent of a traditional Japanese ryokan. Despite its urban setting, stepping inside reveals a tranquil world apart from the city, where soothing music and subtle fragrance envelop visitors. It offers busy professionals a place to unwind while also providing international travelers with a refined and distinctly Japanese spatial experience.
