About W Chengdu Hotel
W Chengdu is a hotel interior design completed in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. The project covers 26800 square meters, including public areas on five levels and about 297 guest rooms and suites. The design draws on the natural colors of Jiuzhaigou, motifs from Sichuan Opera, and the local history of poets and poems. Neutral stone and wood tones are accented with vivid hues and dichroic glass, which shifts color as light changes. A waterfall installation stands in the lobby, and a fluid stone floor pattern guides guests through the spaces.
Drawing from the intersection of Eastern philosophical traditions and contemporary luxury aesthetics, this Golden A' Design Award-winning interior by Glyph Design Studio represents a remarkable achievement in hospitality spatial design, where the eternal symbolism of water, light, and stone converges to create an environment of transcendent beauty. The central installation, suggesting both a frozen cascade and a column of concentrated azure light, establishes an unmistakable vertical axis that connects earthly experience to celestial aspiration—a spatial gesture deeply rooted in sacred architectural traditions across cultures. The selection of dramatically veined green marble, with its swirling patterns of emerald, black, and cream, introduces geological time into the human-scaled environment, each slab presenting millions of years of mineral formation as a backdrop to contemporary experience. The designers demonstrate exceptional sensitivity to material dialogue, positioning the organic turbulence of stone against the precise geometry of suspended glass elements and the fluid curves of architectural ribbons that traverse the upper volumes like captured wind. Chromatic decisions reveal sophisticated understanding of color psychology and cultural resonance: the deep cerulean blue carries associations of depth, wisdom, and infinite sky, while warm amber tones visible through illuminated apertures suggest welcome and human warmth within the monumental scale. The serpentine seating furniture, upholstered in soft sage tones, provides necessary human intimacy within the vertiginous space, its curved form echoing the architectural language while offering tactile comfort. Water features at floor level demonstrate the ancient practice of incorporating reflective surfaces to multiply spatial perception and introduce meditative tranquility. One might contemplate how this space orchestrates the visitor's emotional journey from awe to comfort, from recognition of natural grandeur to embrace of cultivated hospitality.

- Inspiration
- Sophisticated and sensual with ample playfulness. Custom elements are beautifully resolved: selection of stone coloration and special layout arrangements, over-scaled Shu Brocade-inspired wall graphics, and large suspended metal mesh echoes the drama of sweeping curtains. Polished and hairline textured metals reflect patron’s movement, lighting and objects creating an indefinite atmosphere. Public engagement through design by sensory stimulation, touch and material exploration allows guests and locals alike to experience the best of Chengdu within W.
Guest room design was drawn on an abstract notion of Bian Lian performances at local theatres. The mysterious and transformation aspects were magnified. Super graphic at headboard is animated by textured acrylic panels at front creating an effect similar to lenticular printing. The forms and shapes widely used for the Bian Lian masks are translated to organic shapes throughout the rooms. - Image Credits
