About White Box Clothing Store

White Box is a clothing store interior located in Rui'an, Wenzhou. The store occupies an area of about 35 square meters. The front door is small, and the traditional display window is replaced by a long horizontal window with a wide white surface below. White is applied across the simple box-like structure, and light beams are arranged to highlight the white terrazzo floor. A small loft was added to increase the usable area and to keep the plan well organized. Oak stairs, footlights and light strips connect the two levels.

Xiaoying Huang's White Box Clothing Store represents a significant contribution to contemporary retail design discourse, positioning itself within the lineage of reductive spatial philosophies that trace through Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian functionalist traditions while achieving a distinctly personal synthesis. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how architectural restraint can elevate the experience of material goods, transforming the commercial act of browsing into an almost ceremonial encounter with carefully selected garments. The technical achievement lies in the orchestration of multiple lighting strategies, where recessed ceiling fixtures provide focused illumination for merchandise while continuous linear LED elements at the floor junction create an ethereal floating quality, suggesting that the pristine walls hover above an illuminated threshold rather than meeting the ground in conventional fashion. The suspended garment racks represent a particularly elegant resolution of the display challenge, their minimal black frames and thin cable supports appearing almost to levitate within the space, allowing garments to be appreciated as sculptural objects rather than mere inventory. The designer seems to engage deliberately with gallery conventions, the horizontal picture rail supporting framed photographs establishing an explicit dialogue between retail and exhibition paradigms, suggesting that clothing merits the same contemplative attention typically reserved for artworks. The monochromatic palette operates not as absence but as presence, the subtle variations between cool wall whites and warmer floor tones creating gentle atmospheric modulation that rewards sustained attention. The diagonal ceiling recess introduces controlled dynamism into an otherwise orthogonal composition, its warm ambient glow creating spatial interest while maintaining the overall sense of meditative calm. Visitors might contemplate how environments shape perception, how the removal of visual noise creates space for deeper engagement with fewer, more carefully considered objects.

Unique Properties
In this case, the store takes an area of only 35 square meters. The front door is small, and the traditional display window is replaced by a horizontally long window with much white at the bottom. In this simple box-liked structure, white is massively used and the light beams are well designed to make the white-colored terrazzo floor more elegant. We built a mini loft to meet its functional purpose. The oak stairs, the footlights and the light stripes are another ingenious designs to connect the space.
Dimensions & Packaging
The project takes an area of 32 square meters. The inner structure has a width of 5300mm and depth of 5250mm and height of 4550mm, which takes an area of 28 square meters. There is an extended area with a width of 5400mm and depth of 690mm, which makes an area of 3.7 square meters.

Production Technology
White is such a permissive color that we make the best of white by using it massively in this room. Light is appropriately used to make the beam of light play a specific guiding role in dealing with the aerial perspective relationship of vertical and horizontal space. The floor is covered with white-colored terrazzo, which makes this clean room even more elegant. The stone would feels like warm and softened under the gentle light.
Design Challenge
The hardest part of this design is the room takes an area of only 35 square meters. It's quite difficult to meet the balance of function and visual appearence.
Project Duration
Located in Rui'an, Wenzhou, the project was designed in April 2019 and finished in May 2019.
Operation Flow
The front door is small, and the traditional display window is replaced by a horizontally long window with much white at the bottom to attract the passerbys. We built a mini loft in this room, because we believe another mini space in a small room will extend the room itself and make it well-organized. Furthermore, the room will also be fully used in functional purpose.
Research
A classic space will never exist without the presence of a human being. The interaction between space and human being always enlivens and warms up the space, making it a full-of-story space, while the designer is just out there to get the story ready to tell. The designer needs to take a prior consideration on the relationship between construction and space to make the space more interesting and memorable and with more speciality.
Inspiration
The space and time are infinitive, the space lives only in the current time. A classic space will never exist without the presence of a human being. The interaction between space and human being always enlivens and warms up the space, making it a full-of-story space, while the designer is just out there to get the story ready to tell.
