About Wuhan University Science Park Exhibition Hall

Wuhan University Science Park is a cultural exhibition hall in Wuhan, China. The interior covers 365 square meters and reaches a height of 4.3 meters. Water, drawn from the nearby lake, is the main design inspiration. Curved surfaces, uniform material colors and landscape elements set into the gaps shape the spatial experience. Light travels through the space and creates changing impressions. The layout also addresses the lack of daylight in the corridor and the congestion at the main entrance, while presenting the corporate culture in an ordered way.

Yang Ding's Wuhan University Science Park Exhibition Hall presents an architectural meditation on the dialogue between human construction and geological time, positioning a singular basalt boulder as the protagonist within a sweeping rotunda of contemporary spatial refinement. The installation participates in a lineage of contemplative architectural spaces that employ natural light as primary medium, suggesting affinities with the phenomenological investigations that have characterized museum and gallery design since the late twentieth century. The ovoid oculus serves not merely as illumination source but as cosmological reference, its elliptical form evoking celestial bodies while delivering a quality of light that transforms throughout diurnal cycles. The chromatic restraint of the architectural envelope, executed in gradations from warm white to cool gray, establishes a neutral field against which the dramatic materiality of the volcanic stone asserts its ancient presence. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the seamless integration of concealed lighting systems that wash the left corridor in atmospheric cerulean, creating a chromatic journey from warm rotunda to cool passage that guides visitor circulation through thermal color suggestion. The reflective pool surrounding the boulder introduces a meditative element, its mirror surface doubling the stone while referencing traditions of contemplative water features in both Eastern and Western architectural heritage. The curvilinear walls demonstrate sophisticated surface development, their compound curves requiring advanced fabrication techniques while achieving the organic flow that characterizes biomorphic design philosophy. Thematically, the work appears to explore tensions between permanence and impermanence, between the geological timescales embedded in volcanic formation and the human timescales of architectural intervention. The boulder, potentially sourced from significant terrain, stands as witness to processes spanning millennia, while the pristine architecture represents contemporary human achievement. What conversations might emerge from this encounter between the raw and the refined, between that which endures through cosmic time and that which we construct within our brief moments of presence?

Unique Properties
The landscape and creative scenes are organically combined, the natural form is incorporated, the space is constructed, and the space is used as a touch point for display and publicity. The focus is on creating a sense of space experience and mobilizing the emotions of visitors. The effective delivery method activates the value of space, deeply impresses visitors, and drives actual value conversion.

Production Technology
The relationship between the curved surfaces, the uniform material colors, and the landscape implanted in the gaps convey the spatial emotions in a free state.
Design Challenge
According to the design task requirements and the conditions of the site itself, it is necessary to solve the problem of lack of lighting in the corridor, the problem of blockage at the main entrance, the problem of creative display of space, and the problem of the application of theme culture and elements in space. But the most important thing is how to create a creative space, express corporate culture in an orderly manner and maximize the activation of space value.
Project Duration
Located in Wuhan, China, the project was designed in November 2023
Operation Flow
Conceiving a heterogeneous object to impact the original order, destroying the original stable and unified single narrative, giving the old experience a strange side, and the stable old system begins to collapse, thus triggering the possibility of reinterpreting the system.
Research
Dedicated to the study of spatial visual structure and character experience psychology, he is good at subverting the conventional physical structure experience space and creating a higher value composite experience space.
Inspiration
The project is located beside the Thomson Lake in Wuhan. The designer used water as the design inspiration for the space. The changing state of water is dynamic and full of energy. We drew inspiration from water and creatively applied it to the exhibition hall space. At the same time, the integration of landscape injects vitality into the space, and the light travels through the space, bringing a different experience.
