Interview with TONG WEN

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I learned fine arts at Parsons the New School. Art allows me to express my feelings. Design allows me to create new things.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Working as a freelancer is challenging but interesting. Clients are different, demands are different. So design outcome would be different too,
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
If the client really trusts me, then the design experience would be wonderful
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I really like MUJIRUSHIRYOYHIN Wall Bluetooth Speaker. It is simple, elegant and natural.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The most charming part of design is that it is infinite. I cannot see the future because i know it will surprise me.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I would say it is simple and elegant. Exploring new styles is hard, because designers are usually only familiar with one style. So work harder!
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live at Bay Area, California. Yes, I love traditional style very much. Pros are like you can reach out to a lot of local art pieces, cons are like it is hard to meet different designers living other places.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Iteration is important. Listening to your audiences/users is important.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
positive part is like I can explore new topics everyday, it is a lot of fun. Negative part is like I may feel stuck sometimes, that is really frastrating.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
If you are really designing something, you won't feel the time.
What was your most important job experience?
I worked as a freelancer for long time. That experience is very beneficial.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I like to design all kinds of work, especially something I have never designed before.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I would design till I can not feel any fun during design process. Working on next project.
