About Livre Armchair

Livre was born from the idea to blend together the desire for the concept of an Asian-inspired product with the actual perspective of GallottieRadice. The result of this is an armchair that could be define hybrid for the craftmanship applied to the solid wood base; the upper part is instead an enveloping armchair, that feels like a cocoon, very elegant in its shape in contrast with the base which is thick but at the same time tapered, interesting and very soft as a whole.

Federica Biasi's Livre Armchair emerges from a distinguished lineage of enveloping seating forms that traces through mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian design traditions and earlier precedents in the barrel and tub chair typologies of European decorative arts. The work demonstrates a refined understanding of how furniture might function simultaneously as functional object and sculptural presence within interior environments, with its generous curved backrest rising to wrap around the seated occupant in a gesture suggesting both protection and embrace. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the seamless integration of the upholstered shell's five-panel construction, where vertical seam lines articulate the form's organic geometry while maintaining visual continuity across the enveloping surface. The material dialogue between the warm, tactile softness of the premium textile covering and the architectural precision of the dark-stained wooden base establishes a sophisticated vocabulary of contrasts—yielding and structural, organic and geometric, warm neutral and cool charcoal—that rewards sustained contemplation. The cross-stretcher framework connecting the four cylindrical legs demonstrates structural logic elevated to aesthetic expression, creating a minimal geometric lattice that grounds the hovering organic volume above while referencing craft traditions of furniture joinery. Thematically, the Livre Armchair appears to explore questions of shelter and comfort, creating what might be understood as a portable architectural moment, a defined territory of repose within larger spatial contexts. The form's name, suggesting pages of a book, perhaps invites consideration of how the wrapping backrest might evoke the protective enclosure of an opened volume, creating an intimate space for reading, reflection, or quiet conversation. One might contemplate how this design balances the competing demands of visual lightness and physical comfort, achieving both through considered proportion and material selection.

Design Challenge
The most difficult creative challenge in this project was to combine the softness of the shapes with the desire to highlight one of the main elements of the armchair: the wooden base. My aim was precisely to obtain soft and welcoming lines without neglecting the comfort of the seat, but still leaving the structure evident.
Project Duration
from 2018 to 2020
Operation Flow
The soft line of the armchair invites to moments of absolute relax and comfort.
Research
Livre is somehow particular as I have been studying Asian and Japanese design for a long time, and I wanted to understand how to incorporate something that was not already seen into a concept like the one developed for GallottieRadice; at the same time, something that could communicate their uniqueness, the uniqueness in working raw materials, the uniqueness not only in the richness of materials, but also the elegance in shapes, so I tried to blend together my desire for the concept of an Asian-inspired product with the actual perspective of GallottieRadice.
Inspiration
This armchair draws its maximum inspiration from the past and in particular from the Eastern world, where the base was composed of a structure in cylinders that were tied with ropes, thus leaving the entire structure visible. I like to think of today's furniture as citations of a past in continuous contact with the contemporary world, like an infinite search archetypes and the craftsmanship of past worlds.
