Interviews
Grand Interview
Your innovative approach to addressing infantile amnesia through Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System is groundbreaking - could you share the personal experiences or observations that inspired you to tackle this unique challenge in early childhood memory preservation?
The inspiration for Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System came from a personal curiosity about the fleeting nature of early childhood memories, known as infantile amnesia. As someone deeply fascinated by human behavior and emotional connections, I began reflecting on how many formative experiences from early life are lost to memory as we grow older. Observing how parents often try to preserve their child’s milestones through photos or journals, I realized there was a gap in capturing these moments in a way that felt interactive and tangible for both parents and children. This led me to explore how design could help bridge the gap between memory and experience, creating a tool that actively engages with the emotional and sensory aspects of memory preservation. Nemoo became a way to capture the essence of these moments—not just as static records, but as a living, interactive system that encourages revisiting and connecting with those precious early years.
The integration of virtual reality playback in Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System offers an immersive way to reconnect with early memories - how did you envision this technological bridge between past and present enhancing the emotional connection between parents and children?
The integration of virtual reality playback in Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System was envisioned as a powerful tool to transcend the limitations of traditional memory preservation methods. By immersing users in recreated environments and moments, VR offers an unparalleled way to relive experiences that might otherwise fade into abstraction. For parents, this technology allows them to step back into the world of their child's early years, rekindling emotions tied to those fleeting moments. For children, it provides an interactive window into their formative years, helping them connect with a part of their lives they might not consciously remember. The goal was to create a bridge between past and present, where memories are not just observed but felt. This heightened emotional connection fosters deeper bonds within families, encouraging shared storytelling and mutual understanding. The immersive nature of VR ensures that these memories are not just archived but actively relived, making them more meaningful and impactful.
Considering the delicate balance between capturing memories and ensuring comfort, how did your team develop the wearable component of Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System to be both technologically sophisticated and suitable for infant use?
Creating the wearable component of Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System was all about balancing advanced technology with the comfort and safety of infants. To do this, we focused on designing something that was both practical and gentle. We started by studying how babies move and what materials would feel soft and safe on their sensitive skin. With advice from child development experts and pediatricians, we chose hypoallergenic, lightweight fabrics to ensure the wearable wouldn’t cause irritation or discomfort. The technology inside, like sensors and memory storage, was made as small and lightweight as possible to keep the device easy to wear. We made sure everything fit seamlessly into the design so it wouldn’t feel bulky or awkward. To ensure the wearable was both safe and reliable, we tested it rigorously. The final product is simple for parents to use while being comfortable for babies, combining smart features with a thoughtful, baby-friendly design.

SR-2238 Silicon Rubber/Fabric - Design Challenge
- There are 3 main challenges. Firstly, it's to differentiate it from the regular baby monitor, so we tried to think from a baby’s perspective, including more immersive experience through a VR converting function. The second challenge is when we made the functional model. It was hard to cast a tiny model with comparable sophisticated electronic components. The third challenge is the difficulties of finding an appropriate material to cast the model. It has to be a baby-child friendly material should be soft enough to be touched by an infant baby. Also hard enough to be held in baby’s clothes.
- Research
- Childhood Amnesia, also called infantile amnesia, is the inability of adults to retrieve episodic memories, which are memories of specific events, such as times, places, associated emotionally and other contexts like who, what, when, and where, before the age of 3 years old.
- Inspiration
- The name Nemoo is inspired by the movie Finding Dory. Dory suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds. With help from her friend Nemo, Dory finds her lost memory and embarks on an epic adventure to find her parents. Nemoo helps users retrieve their early memories. The package looks like a dairy book. Nemoo uses its package for charging and storing which can be cherished and stored in the bookshelf for a long time.
- Project Duration
- This project started and ended in San Francisco in 4 months.
- Operation Flow
- By simply attaching Nemoo to baby's hats, it can record the child’s memory from the baby’s perspective. When parents discover a memorable moment, the parent can say the trigger word to start recording. Through the Bluetooth connection, the NEMOO mobile app can remotely manage the settings and storage. With the NEMOO app, the child’s footage is transferred to the parent's phone and automatically transformed into a memorable VR story. It also can connect more than two Nemoo devices at the same time.
