Your innovative approach to concealing the zipper in the Bannou Raincoat while maintaining its formal aesthetic represents a significant technical achievement - could you walk us through the evolution of this design challenge and how you ultimately arrived at the current solution?
Thank you for noticing that! Concealing the zipper while maintaining the raincoat's formal aesthetic was indeed one of our biggest design challenges. The Bannou Raincoat's mission was to blend functionality with a polished, professional look, and an exposed zipper tended to break that visual flow, making the coat feel more utilitarian than versatile.1. Defining the ChallengeWe started with the goal of creating a coat that could adapt to both formal and casual settings, offering full rain protection without compromising style. Early prototypes with visible zippers felt out of place in a more formal or polished outfit, disrupting the smooth silhouette we envisioned. We needed a solution that would integrate the zipper functionality seamlessly without diminishing the coat’s sophistication.2. Prototyping and Testing Concealment TechniquesInitially, we experimented with using fabric flaps to cover the zipper, but this added bulk and wasn’t as visually streamlined as we wanted. Magnetic closures and snap buttons as alternatives also came up, but they weren’t waterproof enough and sometimes added more technical complications. The biggest challenge was to ensure that the design remained functional and secure in heavy rain without appearing too “technical.”3. Exploring Invisible and Reverse ZippersNext, we looked into invisible and reverse zippers, often used in dresses and tailored pieces. These offered a lower profile but still left a slight visual impression. We also found they sometimes lacked the robustness needed for rain gear, so this was a temporary step in the design process.4. The Final Solution: Concealed Placket and Integrated Seam DesignFinally, after multiple iterations, we arrived at a concealed placket with a carefully designed seam that hides the zipper when closed. By incorporating the zipper behind a slim panel that lies flush against the coat when zipped, we achieved both waterproof functionality and an uninterrupted front. This approach required precise tailoring to ensure the panel remained flat and didn’t disrupt the coat’s overall silhouette, maintaining its formal, streamlined look. This journey showed us how small details, like zipper placement, can impact the entire aesthetic and usability of a garment. The final design has been well-received, particularly by customers looking for a raincoat that doesn’t look out of place in a boardroom or formal setting. It’s a small but crucial aspect of what makes the Bannou Raincoat so versatile.
The Bannou Raincoat's dual meaning of 'Harenohi' - encompassing both sunny days and special occasions - reflects a deep cultural consideration; how did this Japanese concept influence your material selection and overall design philosophy?
The Japanese concept of Harenohi (晴れの日) was indeed central to our vision for the Bannou Raincoat. This idea beautifully embodies both literal and symbolic meanings—sunny days and special, memorable occasions—which guided not only the garment’s look but also its functionality and fabric choice.1. Material Selection: Balancing Elegance with FunctionalityIn honoring Harenohi, we needed materials that could withstand rain yet retain an air of sophistication suitable for special moments. After experimenting, we chose a lightweight, high-quality technical fabric that is waterproof yet has a soft, matte finish. This fabric mimics the look and feel of traditional Japanese silk or fine wool, materials typically worn on ceremonial days, while providing the practical features essential for rainy days. The result was a fabric that feels special to wear, whether it’s protecting you in a storm or worn out on a sunny day.2. Design Philosophy: Aesthetic DualityReflecting the duality of Harenohi, we designed the Bannou Raincoat to be both functional and elegant. Details such as the concealed zipper and smooth seams were deliberate choices to maintain a streamlined, polished look that would work in both formal and everyday contexts. The coat’s silhouette was also inspired by the simplicity and restraint often seen in traditional Japanese garments, ensuring it would look at home during a professional meeting, a special event, or a casual outing.3. Versatility as a Core PrincipleThe philosophy of Harenohi influenced our approach to versatility. In Japan, clothing that serves a wide variety of occasions is highly valued, and we wanted the Bannou Raincoat to embody that. By choosing a timeless, adaptable design with classic lines, we created a piece that transitions effortlessly between settings and seasons. In this way, the coat truly honors the concept of Harenohi, allowing wearers to feel prepared and comfortable, whatever the day or occasion may bring. In essence, Harenohi was more than an inspiration; it was a guiding principle that informed each detail of the Bannou Raincoat. It’s a garment that merges protection with elegance, just as Harenohi merges everyday functionality with the beauty of special occasions.
The moisture permeability (8,000g/m2/24hr) and water pressure resistance (20,000mm) of the Bannou Raincoat are impressive technical specifications - what inspired you to pursue these specific performance metrics while maintaining a luxurious texture suitable for formal wear?
Achieving these performance metrics while preserving a luxurious feel was a delicate balance, driven by our vision for a raincoat that would perform as robustly as high-end outdoor gear but retain a sophisticated aesthetic. The Bannou Raincoat needed to be both fully functional in inclement weather and refined enough for formal or semi-formal settings. Here’s how we arrived at those specific performance benchmarks:1. Understanding Real-World Needs for Urban ProfessionalsWe envisioned the Bannou Raincoat as an everyday essential for professionals who transition between outdoor and indoor environments, often encountering unpredictable weather. These users require a high degree of water resistance to stay dry and comfortable in downpours, yet they also need breathability to prevent overheating. The benchmark of 20,000mm for water pressure resistance, which protects in even heavy rain, became our target. The permeability rating of 8,000g/m²/24hr was chosen to prevent the interior from feeling clammy, even after long wear on a rainy day.2. Choosing Materials that Balance Technology with TextureMany waterproof fabrics offer high performance but can feel stiff, plasticky, or heavy. For the Bannou Raincoat, we sourced advanced, lightweight laminates that maintain softness and a refined hand feel. This selection process involved multiple prototypes and testing sessions to find a material that met our technical criteria while resembling the smooth, almost silken feel of luxury textiles. The final fabric has a matte finish and a soft drape, reminiscent of high-end suiting materials, making it suitable for more formal settings.3. Designing for Versatility and EleganceMaintaining a refined texture was crucial to our philosophy of Harenohi, where the raincoat should feel as suitable for special occasions as it does for practical use. With these metrics, we could ensure the wearer stayed comfortable in both rainy and fair weather, allowing the coat to function as an all-day piece rather than just rainwear. This balance of performance and luxury allows the Bannou Raincoat to transition seamlessly between boardrooms, city streets, and even outdoor events. In essence, by choosing these performance standards, we were able to develop a coat that offered the protection of technical rainwear while maintaining the elegance and tactility expected of a formal garment. The result is a versatile piece that stands up to both weather and wardrobe needs, reinforcing the core vision of the Bannou Raincoat.

- Unique Properties
- The name of the coat "Bannou" means versatility in Japanese. The concept of "a raincoat to be worn on a 'Harenohi'" has 2 meanings. The first is "a raincoat to be worn on "sunny days (harenohi)", which can be used as a normal coat without getting stuffy on sunny days. The second is "a raincoat to be worn on "special occasions (Harenohi)". It is made of high-grade materials and has a formal silhouette so that it can be worn on special occasions.

- Production Technology
- Our goal was to create this coat that could be worn over a suit as a normal coat (not recognizable as a raincoat). Therefore, we chose a fabric with high moisture permeability (8,000g/m2/24hr) and water pressure resistance (20,000mm), while focusing on the texture of the material. The zipper is a concealed type, and the hood is removable for formal use. To prevent the zipper from being seen, the front portion and the joint with the hood are ingeniously designed.
- Design Challenge
- The structure of the detachable hood is designed to hide the zipper at the joint of the hood. The thickness of the overlapping fabrics made sewing difficult, and the structure was changed many times before reaching the present structure.
By making the hood detachable, it can be worn on formal occasions, and by completely concealing the zipper at the joint, it can be worn with the collar up.
The zipper would look casual if it were visible. We have made it so that the zipper is not visible even when worn unbuttoned. - Research
- We have confirmed there are several raincoats on the market with a similar concept, but they have visible zippers (or were never intended to be hidden in the first place), the hood is not removable, and the texture of the material is very nylon-like, which we feel does not completely hide the fact that it is a raincoat we feel they do not completely hide the fact that it is a raincoat. This item differs from these in that the material texture, silhouette, and details (such as the zipper being concealed) are carefully selected to make it look like an ordinary coat from the outside.
- Inspiration
- The two conditions for wearing a raincoat are 1) It is raining and 2) You have a raincoat at that time, but since 2) You have a raincoat at that time cannot be satisfied, we thought there would be few opportunities to wear a raincoat. Therefore, we thought if we could wear it on usually without getting steamed up, it would be convenient when it comes time to wear a raincoat. An outdoor jacket would satisfy the requirement, but there are not many stylish and formal types on the market.
