About Ebi Lab Office Building

EBI Lab is a multifunctional building designed for bicycle display, sales, maintenance and user experiences. The facade is made of mirror polished stainless steel, a material that is corrosion resistant, weather resistant and impact resistant. The reflective surface mirrors the surroundings and connects the building with the city. A spiral staircase extends from the interior to the facade and back inside, linking the functional areas and enlarging the display area. Renewable materials, eco friendly paints and energy efficient lighting reduce the environmental impact.

This purpose-designed facility represents a thoughtful architectural response to the spatial and communicative needs of specialized technical development environments, where the building envelope itself becomes an instrument of organizational transparency and public engagement with innovation processes. The composition demonstrates accomplished handling of proportion and scale, with the two-story massing achieving presence without monumentality through the strategic deployment of horizontal emphasis in the crowning signage band and the carefully calibrated rhythm of vertical glazing divisions below, these elements working in concert to establish visual equilibrium between assertive corporate identity and welcoming institutional openness. The material palette shows admirable restraint and clarity of intention, limiting itself to charcoal-finished opaque surfaces that suggest powder-coated metal or composite cladding and expansive areas of architectural glass, this reductive chromatic strategy allowing tectonic relationships and proportional systems to communicate directly without decorative mediation. The fenestration strategy appears particularly considered, with the ground-level glazed wall system creating a transparent threshold that dissolves the conventional opacity of institutional facades, transforming the building's street presence into a kind of urban vitarium where interior activities become visible components of the public realm, while the upper-level window arrangement maintains functional privacy for workspaces while still permitting environmental connection and natural illumination penetration. Within the transparent ground floor, a sculptural element commands attention, its suspended positioning and formal character suggesting the kinetic vehicles or prototypes central to the organization's innovative mission, this interior display strategy effectively converting the architectural envelope into an exhibition mechanism that celebrates technical achievement and invites public curiosity about the creative processes occurring within. The dimensional signage crowning the composition demonstrates skilled integration of typographic communication into architectural form, the clean sans-serif letterforms projecting forward from the dark horizontal band with sufficient relief to create subtle shadow play and dimensional presence while maintaining the overall geometric discipline and material restraint characterizing the project. The work seems to engage thoughtfully with established modernist principles emphasizing functional transparency, material honesty, and the expression of structural systems, while simultaneously addressing contemporary concerns around workplace visibility, sustainable resource deployment, and the creation of branded architectural environments that communicate organizational identity and values through spatial and formal means rather than applied ornament. The building invites consideration of how specialized technical facilities might engage their surrounding communities not through monumental assertion or protective enclosure but through generous visual access and the celebration of innovation as a shared cultural resource worthy of architectural display and public contemplation.

Production Technology
The facade adopts corrosion resistant, weather resistant, and impact resistant mirror polished stainless steel as its main material. By reflecting the surroundings, it seamlessly blends reality and virtuality, creating a dreamy visual effect and enhancing interaction with the urban environment. Renewable materials and energy saving technologies, like eco friendly paints and energy efficient lighting, reduce environmental impact and underscore sustainable design principles applied to the project.
Design Challenge
The project tackles the challenge of achieving a cohesive layout and efficient flow in a multifunctional space with limited area. Through meticulous design, the integration of stairs and corridors creates seamless connections between functional zones, optimizing space utilization. The spiral staircase not only expands the display area on the facade but also introduces a distinctive architectural feature, offering a unique spatial experience and enhancing the overall flow design.
Project Duration
The project started in May, 2024, and will finish in October, 2025 in Beijing.
Operation Flow
The project emphasizes interactivity, with the spiral staircase as its centerpiece. Extending from the interior to the facade and back inside, it seamlessly connects various functional areas, offering consumers a convenient and comfortable visiting experience. Thoughtfully designed lighting enhances the staircase, adds spatial depth, and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Research
The design team recognizes that bikes are more than just a convenient urban commuting tool. They serve as a bridge between people and nature, as well as the past and the future. By incorporating this culturally significant and symbolic element, EBI Lab transcends its role as a space for bike display and sales, becoming a platform for urban cultural exchange and a strong advocate for green mobility.
Inspiration
Inspired by the dynamic characteristics of bicycles and the core values of the EBI brand, this project reimagines urban travel. The dynamic, fluid form of bikes serves as a rich source of inspiration, while the integration of art and technology elements shapes a distinctive visual language. The result is a unique spatial experience that embodies the harmony of motion, creativity, and innovation.
