About Igo App Design
Igo is a mobile application for a smart shared shuttle service. The service aims to provide affordable and safe travel for low income communities in Los Angeles. Intelligent algorithms match passengers travelling to nearby destinations, which improves vehicle occupancy and addresses first and last mile travel. The application also lists job opportunities along each route. Safety features include voice activated emergency alerts, one click emergency calling and trip sharing for night travel. The interface is simple, so core functions are easy to find.

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The core principle behind IGO is to redesign urban mobility for equity. Inspired by the real pain points of low-income communities in Los Angeles—especially the commuting barriers for night-shift workers—we aimed to create a solution that makes mobility safer, smarter, and more inclusive. The inspiration came from a mix of real-life interviews and a deep belief that mobility is not just transportation—it is access to opportunity.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
Our main focus was inclusive user experience and functional innovation. We wanted to reduce the cognitive burden for tech-novice users, while embedding powerful features like voice-triggered emergency alerts and real-time job discovery. Ultimately, we aimed to empower marginalized communities by giving them safer, smarter and more opportunity-linked commutes.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
We plan to further develop IGO into a fully functional app pilot program in partnership with local communities and transportation authorities. The next phase includes AI optimization for job matching and route prediction. We also hope to integrate IGO into city-wide smart infrastructure systems to drive long-term urban equity.

- Departing from conventional fixed route shuttle models, Igo employs advanced intelligent algorithms to match passengers travelling to nearby destinations, optimizing vehicle occupancy rates. To further enhance social inclusivity and economic mobility, Igo innovatively integrates job recommendations along routes, helping commuters discover employment opportunities. It also features voice controlled emergency alarms, one click 911 dialling, and trip sharing to boost nighttime commuting safety.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge was making Igo accessible to low income groups with limited access to technology. Social barriers like digital literacy and economic constraints made usability a key focus. Through research, Igo was designed with a simple intuitive interface and an optimized onboarding process. External challenges included adapting to existing transit laws and integrating real time data. Overcoming these obstacles ensured a seamless affordable and inclusive mobility solution.
- Research
- Igo research focused on urban transportation equity for low income communities in Los Angeles, aiming to identify commuting challenges and improve mobility solutions. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, researchers conducted 50 surveys and 10 interviews. The findings highlighted long commutes, high costs, and safety concerns. These insights guided the development of optimized routes, real time tracking, and job integration, creating a more accessible, efficient, and opportunity driven transit system.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the integration of sharing economy principles with smart transportation, Igo combines the strengths of Uber carpooling model with public transit systems to create a low cost high coverage smart shuttle service. The theme of Igo is Equal Mobility Sharing the Future focusing on breaking down traditional transportation barriers to offer affordable reliable efficient and convenient shared shuttle services for low income communities thereby improving urban mobility equity.
- Project Duration
- Designed and developed from January to April 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The User Interface design of Igo is clean and intuitive, using green as the primary colour with black and white accents to emphasize sustainability and convey professionalism. Modular layouts and optimized visual flow enable users to easily access core functions like booking, route inquiries, and safety alerts, minimizing the learning curve. Additionally, intelligent interactions such as simple onboarding, smart icons, and route visualization maps ensure a smooth and convenient user experience.
