Interviews

Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

The main idea behind this project is to reconnect people with the natural environment through interactive editorial design. Inspired by the landscape of Muzha, where the city meets the mountains, we wanted to revive the sense of curiosity and discovery often experienced in childhood. By presenting local plants, animals, and geological features through visual storytelling, the design encourages readers to slow down, observe, and develop a deeper appreciation for their surroundings.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

Our primary focus was to transform complex ecological information into an engaging and accessible reading experience. We aimed to combine editorial design, material experimentation, and interaction so that readers would not simply receive information but actively explore it. Through this process, we hoped to strengthen both understanding of local ecology and emotional connections with nature.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

We hope to further develop this project into a broader educational publication that can be adapted to different regions and environmental topics. We also plan to explore opportunities for exhibitions, educational collaborations, and public engagement activities that encourage more people to learn about local ecosystems through design.

Production Technology
This project uses lenticular printing to create visual changes and enhance depth as the viewing angle shifts. Tracing paper is applied as a translucent layer to simulate drifting mist and reveal content progressively. Combined with custom illustrations and structured layouts, these techniques create an interactive reading experience that encourages active exploration.
Design Challenge
The project faced challenges in collecting and structuring information on plants, animals, and landforms in Muzha. A key difficulty was translating complex knowledge into clear visual narratives while maintaining accuracy. Integrating material techniques such as tracing paper and lenticular printing into a unified design system also required experimentation. These issues were addressed through iterative prototyping, visual refinement, and balancing content, material, and user experience.
Research
This project is a qualitative design research study exploring how book design can communicate local environmental knowledge and emotional experience. Field observation in Muzha, visual documentation, and analysis of natural elements were conducted. Data was collected through photography, sketching, and iterative material testing. Prototypes were evaluated by local residents and design focus groups. Results indicate that layered materials and interactive elements enhance engagement and comprehension. The research demonstrates how design methods can transform complex information into accessible and meaningful experiences.
Inspiration
This project is inspired by the natural landscape of Muzha, where the city meets the mountains. It is motivated by a desire to revive a sense of curiosity toward nature, similar to the wonder experienced in childhood. By focusing on overlooked plants, animals, and landforms, the project aims to transform local knowledge into an engaging experience and encourage a deeper connection with the environment.
Project Duration
The project started in September 2025 and was completed in March 2026 at Ming Chi University of Technology in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The booklets are explored through tilting and page turning. The lenticular cover creates shifting visuals, while layered translucent pages reveal content gradually. As readers move through the book, information unfolds step by step, guiding exploration of plants, animals, and landforms. This interaction enhances engagement and helps users understand complex information more clearly.
