The Design

About Idea And Plan Stationery Products

Idea and Plan series are designed to ease the daily burden of keeping track of to-do lists, organizations, meetings and ideas. The design process started by studying various bullet journals, organizers and sketch notebooks from different brands’, followed by a Q&A among friends and family to get a better grasp on different ways of listing and sketching. Idea and Plan series needed a different perspective. Through word play, contrasting colors, typography and self explanatory content, the series were designed to add a splash of color and fun to one’s daily responsibilities.

Interviews

Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

My main inspiration was how the process of ideation and planning. And thus, the IDEA and PLAN series. I like obvious titles and pops of colors. These two mixed, make up the series.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

I wanted people to have an item on the desks or in their pockets/handbags, which would lighten up their day and make planning and ideation more enjoyable. I asked a couple of friends about their ideation processes and from there on, I made a list of musts to go into the notebooks. The series other items, notepads and magnets came later. People like the idea of having a set of items. And it's always better to offer people a couple of products to buy, rather than just one.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

I want to advertise it more in order to reach a wider range of clients. Also, it would be a dream come true if IDEA and PLAN series start selling internationally.

Production Technology
Production was realized by Keskin Color, which is both the client and the partner in the project. Keskin Color was responsible for the production and distribution of the products.
The notebooks are each 80 spread with 80 gr paper. All printing is in color.
Design Challenge
The design needed to apply to a large audience and aim to organize their busy schedules and collecting all data in one place. The Idea notebook was tricky because the page layout had to be sufficient for an average person's hand writing and sketch process.
Colors were specifically made to cheer the owner of the products, literally adding a splash of color to everyday responsibilities and brain storming.
Another challenge was to make the products pop among other notebooks, planners and magnets. The typography and color scheme were designed to be loud and clear in order to quickly capture the attention of a possible buyer.
Research
An overall search for a common ground and differentiating points among planners and bullet journals was a must prior to the design process. It was almost like a sociological research since the two concepts were to apply to a large mass.
Some of the other research steps were: many trips to different stationery shops, Q&A with friends and co-workers about note-taking and daily organizers and color tests to find the right ones.
Inspiration
Daily chores and organizational skills.
Office life and the pace of modern world, mixed with humor and practicality.
Effects of colors on human psychology.
Project Duration
The project started in September 2018, in Istanbul. Design was finished at the end of November 2018.
Products were on shelves in April 2019.
Operation Flow
Idea and Plan stationery products are meant for personal use on a daily basis. Plan notebook is a small, pocket size notebook because since it is all about to-do lists and reminders so the owner has to carry it around. Idea notebook is a little larder than Plan, in order to capture the wonderful ideas, sketches, inventions and general brainstorming of its owner. Each notebook has an elastic fabric band in order to protect the content. The band can also be used as a pencil holder. The other products within the set use the same content and color scheme as the notebooks and appropriated to the specific product's size and use.
