About Icy Cuinneog Reoiteog
Is seit mhias fhreastail uachtar reoite í Icy. Is minic a fhreastalaítear uachtar reoite i mias agus an spúnóg curtha ar leithligh ar phláta, ar éadach nó laistigh den mhias féin. Tugann Icy na heilimintí seo le chéile agus déanann sí den spúnóg cuid den mhias fhreastail. Coinníonn bonn maighnéadach an spúnóg ina háit fad is atá an mhias á hiompar agus á freastal. Glacann na miasa cruth criostal ilfhoirmiúil atá suite i bhfráma, i dtrí chruth éagsúla, chun cuimhne ar phíosaí oighir fuara trédhearcacha a mhúscailt. Is iad na hábhair a úsáidtear ná alúmanam, gloine chriostail, cruach dhosmálta agus maighnéid.

- Unique Properties
- "Icy" is an ice cream serving dish set which can hold spoons. The intent is to bring together all the elements required while serving ice cream such as bowl, plate and spoon. The idea is to change the way spoons are placed while serving and treated as a separate entity. It is either placed on the plate or cloth underneath or inside the bowl. Icy makes spoons a part of the serving bowl with a magnetic base to keep the spoon intact. It makes the serving experience more elegant and less retrofit.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Packaging Dimension: 410mmx 205mm x 100mm
I base: 200mm x 60mm x 130mm, thickness 6mm

- Production Technology
- Materials used are Aluminium, Crystal glass, 18/0 stainless steel and Sm2Co17 magnets. Aluminium has very low Relative Magnetic Permeability of 1 (equal to that of Air). So, it cannot shield the Magnetic field when its thickness is very less. The magnet is required to be embedded in the aluminium base. The pouring temperature while casting of aluminium is around 700 degree Celsius. Therefore, there is a need of a magnet which has high Curie temperature. So, Sm2Co17 magnet is used.
- Design Challenge
- Making right choice of materials was challenging to make the magnetic base work.
- Research
- Prior art Study on materials which do not shield magnetic field was conducted. Aluminium was found to be a suitable material for tableware. Another study on magnets with high Curie temperature was done in order to choose a suitable magnet which will not lose its magnetic property while casting Aluminium at temperature 700 degree Celsius.
- Inspiration
- It all started in a restaurant when dessert came in a typical ice cream bowl and spoons on a separate plate. It provoked to think that why these elements are treated separately when they are meant to be together. This inspired to design Icy, bringing all the elements together and taking the form of highly refractive faceted crystals with a frame, to give a perception of chill, cold transparent ice pieces of different shapes to serve ice cream in the most elegant and minimalistic way.
- Project Duration
- October 2015, Bangalore, India till February 2016.
- Operation Flow
- Place the spoon on the inner side groove of the base. The spoon will be attracted towards the base because of the magnet embedded inside it. This helps in keeping the spoon intact and remain stable while carrying and serving. Then place the crystal inside the groove or cut outs on the top of the base. Adjust to make sure the crystal surface coincides with the cuts on the groove. This provides stability and avoid slipping of the crystal on the cut faces of the groove.
