Design Challenge
The most challenging aspect of the Salamat Residential Apartment project was addressing the constraints posed by the irregular shape of the plot, limited access to natural light, and restrictive municipal regulations. The plot's geometry was difficult, creating issues with spatial organization and façade design. The building had limited frontage, which further constrained the design, requiring a solution to provide both functional living spaces and an aesthetically coherent exterior.
The most critical challenge was the lack of light from two sides due to neighboring properties and city regulations that restricted direct views. This made it difficult to ensure that each apartment received adequate natural light, which is a key factor in creating livable spaces. The design needed to avoid traditional solutions like light wells, which are often used to bring in light in dense urban environments. Instead, the solution was to strategically place windows, terraces, and an angled break in the side wall to redirect light deeper into the building. The introduction of a two-meter-high secondary wall also helped improve daylight access for the internal spaces.
Another challenge came from the regulatory constraints imposed by the neighboring property, which had a significant impact on the design of the façade. The neighboring building limited view access and imposed restrictions on window placement. This required careful planning to maintain privacy while still allowing enough light into the apartments. The façade was also subject to strict municipal guidelines, which required the integration of specific materials, like brick, into the design.Incorporating these constraints while maintaining a high level of design quality and spatial comfort was the most difficult task. Balancing the need for natural light, privacy, and compliance with regulations required innovative thinking, as well as a deep understanding of the spatial dynamics at play. Despite these challenges, the final design successfully created functional, light-filled living spaces and a cohesive façade, overcoming the complexities of the site and local regulations.
Research
The Salamat Residential Apartment is a fascinating example of how architecture can navigate complex constraints while maintaining spatial quality and aesthetic coherence. Given the challenges irregular plot shape, limited natural light, restrictive municipal regulations, and neighboring constraints the project adopts a strategic approach that balances functionality, privacy, and urban integration.
Key Architectural Strategies:
1. Optimizing Natural Light
- Instead of relying on traditional patios or light wells, the design strategically places windows and terraces to maximize daylight.
- A break in the side wall redirects light deeper into the interior.
- A double-height atrium in the duplex allows sunlight to reach both levels.
- Perforated brick screens filter light while maintaining privacy.
2. Façade and Spatial Composition
- The modular outer shell unifies the fragmented mass, addressing the irregular plot shape.
- The façade integrates geometric brick lattice screens, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
- The use of custom-designed bolted brick modules adds depth and rhythm while referencing local architectural traditions.
3. Functional Zoning and Urban Response
- Bedrooms are placed at the front, while living areas are positioned toward the rear for privacy and daylight access.
- Parking is efficiently divided across two levels to serve both standard and duplex units.
- The façade is conceived as an urban critique, offering a refined alternative to conventional regulatory constraints.
Architectural Significance:
The project exemplifies "order within disorder," skillfully resolving the contrast between rigid interior organization and the irregularity of the site. The innovative use of brick as both a structural and aesthetic element not only enhances the architectural identity but also challenges restrictive zoning laws that often result in fragmented urban landscapes.
The Salamat Residential Apartment stands as a thoughtful, site-responsive design that reinterprets conventional residential architecture through a critical, context-aware approach.
The Salamat Residential Apartment is an exemplary case of architecture navigating complex constraints while maintaining spatial quality and aesthetic coherence. The project was developed on an irregularly shaped plot, which posed significant challenges such as limited natural light, strict municipal regulations, and restrictions imposed by neighboring properties. Despite these limitations, the project succeeded in balancing functionality, privacy, and urban integration.
Background Research and Design Context
The project aligns with research in the field of residential architecture, focusing on addressing urban constraints and optimizing space. Key themes explored in related studies include:
- Urban Constraints and Space Efficiency: How zoning laws and density regulations affect design, particularly on small, irregular plots.
- Natural Light Optimization: Techniques for maximizing daylight in spaces with limited access to sunlight, especially in dense urban areas.
- Municipal Regulations and Facade Design: The impact of restrictive zoning codes on the design of facades and the overall urban aesthetic.
- Use of Traditional and Modern Materials: Studies examining the integration of traditional materials, like brick, in modern architectural designs.
This research provided a foundation for tackling the challenges posed by the project site, offering strategies for overcoming these physical and regulatory limitations.
Design Methods and Tools
The design employed a combination of qualitative spatial analysis and quantitative performance simulations. Key methods and tools included:
- Site Analysis and Light Simulation: The team used Rhino + Grasshopper for light penetration modeling and optimizing window placement.
- Parametric Facade Design: A parametric modeling approach was used for the facade, allowing for the optimization of window and brick lattice screen placements to create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
- Material Testing and Structural Analysis: Prototypes of the bolted brick modules were tested for durability and light diffusion to ensure functionality and aesthetic value.
Insights and Key Findings:
Several valuable insights emerged from the design process:
1. Maximizing Natural Light: Instead of traditional light wells, the design strategically positions windows, terraces, and a side wall break to redirect light deeper into the building.
2. Facade as an Urban Critique: The building’s exterior serves as a subtle critique of urban design regulations. The use of custom-designed bolted brick modules challenges conventional facade designs, enhancing urban aesthetics.
3. Innovative Use of Brick: The incorporation of perforated brick screens not only provides privacy but also creates a dynamic visual experience while referencing local architectural traditions.
Impacts and Contributions:
The Salamat Residential Apartment makes significant contributions to architecture and urban design:
- Optimizing Space in Restricted Sites: The project demonstrates how to maximize space efficiency in constrained environments while ensuring comfort and functionality.
- Challenging Urban Regulations: The design critiques restrictive zoning laws by proposing innovative facade treatments that enhance urban aesthetics and livability.
- Material Innovation: The use of brick as both a structural and aesthetic element enhances the building’s identity while offering a new interpretation of traditional materials in contemporary contexts.
Conclusion :
The Salamat Residential Apartment is a powerful example of how innovative architectural solutions can respond to the challenges posed by urban constraints and regulations. By integrating strategies for light optimization, privacy, and functional zoning, the project achieves a dynamic and thoughtful design. Its use of brick, both as a structural and aesthetic element, provides a meaningful response to the local context while challenging conventional urban design norms.
The project exemplifies how architecture can reinterpret and critique urban limitations, offering a vision for a more integrated and cohesive cityscape.
