About China Overseas Yongding Jiuli Residential Display Area
China Overseas Yongding Jiuli is a residential display garden in Beijing, China. The landscape covers 7,237 square meters and follows the terraced landform of the site. A three dimensional garden path links the entry footpath, the sunken courtyard and several themed areas. A rainbow shaped corridor bridge, a high wall with a cascading waterfall and a forest spring form the main views. Layers of woodland spread out around the buildings. The design offers a resort setting inspired by classical Chinese landscape painting.
Milanddesign's China Overseas Yongding Jiuli Residential Display Area exemplifies the contemporary synthesis of Eastern garden philosophy with modernist spatial principles, creating an environment where architecture and landscape engage in profound dialogue. The design appears to draw upon centuries of scholarly garden tradition, wherein every element serves both functional and symbolic purposes, yet interprets these principles through a refined contemporary lens characterized by precise material selection and restrained formal vocabulary. The perforated screen wall demonstrates exceptional craft, its regular geometric pattern creating a permeable threshold that simultaneously defines space while maintaining visual and atmospheric connection between realms. The central water feature, anchored by a carefully selected natural stone of remarkable character, transforms what might be mere decoration into a meditation on permanence and flux, as still water surrounds the ancient rock while cascading sheets introduce gentle movement and sound. The specimen tree, trained over many seasons to achieve its distinctive horizontal form, serves as a living sculpture that bridges the geometric precision of the built elements with the organic irregularities of nature. Material selection reveals sophisticated understanding of tactile and visual harmony, from the warmth of sandstone to the coolness of water, from the patina of bronze to the verdure of bamboo. The spatial sequence suggests careful choreography of experience, with the lattice screen functioning as both welcome and anticipation, preparing visitors for the contemplative garden court beyond. This work invites consideration of how contemporary design practice might honor traditional wisdom while speaking in a distinctly modern voice, and viewers may find themselves contemplating the relationship between shelter and openness, permanence and change, cultivation and wildness.

- Production Technology
- Based on the unique characteristics of the terraced landform, a three-dimensional migratory tour path is designed, which showcases the urban architectural clusters surrounded by lush natural greenery. This urban oasis space is created with "painting within a painting" and "scenery within a scenery," exhibiting distinct layers and connecting multiple themed landscapes.
- Design Challenge
- The most challenging part of the design is how to naturally interconnect the homecoming footpath with the sunken courtyard in the three-dimensional migratory path, and connect different themed landscapes. The flying rainbow corridor bridge and the cascading waterfall over the high wall offer a picturesque view of the shallow mountains.
- Project Duration
- The project was launched in Beijing, China in November 2023, with the design phase lasting from November 2023 to February 2024. It has been completed and unveiled in May 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The secret garden's spatial layout is well-structured with distinct layers, connecting various themed landscapes in a seamless manner. The Flying Rainbow Bridge, towering walls with cascading waterfalls, and the Jade Inkstone Forest Spring offer a picturesque experience of the shallow mountain landscapes.
- Research
- Urban architectural clusters enveloped in lush natural greenery, a three-dimensional migratory experience garden, integrating modern art with oriental cultural sentiment, and featuring mountain, stone, and forest landscapes that create scenic views throughout the four seasons.
- Inspiration
- "With mountains and valleys in one's heart, one can find a forest and spring everywhere" is a portrayal of the Chinese people's pursuit of a natural residence, which has been passed down through generations. The design is based on the blueprint of "Travelers Among Mountains and Streams", inheriting the essence, gathering the cultural context, and entering the artistic conception, offering an urban resort experience that seamlessly integrates with nature.
