About Hong Kong Pavilion Exposition Garden

Hong Kong Pavilion is an exposition garden created for an international horticultural exposition in Chengdu, China. The site covers about 1,500 square meters. The pavilion structure is made of engineered bamboo, a low-carbon material sourced in Sichuan, and is shaped with traditional Hong Kong bamboo scaffolding techniques. The form recalls the ridges of Lion Rock, while a shallow pool and boat sculptures refer to Victoria Harbour. Themed planting areas, including butterfly, edible and wetland gardens, line the meandering pathways and reflect local habitats.

ArchSD's Hong Kong Pavilion Exposition Garden stands as a remarkable achievement in contemporary exposition design, synthesizing traditional bamboo construction methodologies with innovative structural engineering and theatrical illumination strategies to create an immersive nocturnal landscape experience. The work emerges from a rich lineage of Asian architectural traditions that have long celebrated bamboo as a material of exceptional tensile strength, rapid renewability, and profound cultural resonance, here elevated through contemporary parametric design approaches that transform vernacular building techniques into spectacular spatial poetry. The lattice structure's undulating profile evokes the rhythmic topography of mountainous landscapes, a formal choice that grounds the pavilion within established Asian landscape painting traditions while proposing fresh interpretations through architectural scale and luminous materiality. The integration of punctual illumination at each bamboo joint intersection demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how light can articulate structure, each warm point source simultaneously revealing construction logic while generating atmospheric enchantment. The accompanying sculptural elements, with their folded geometric surfaces and softly radiant translucency, introduce an almost botanical presence that complements the structural bamboo with forms suggesting unfurling blossoms or ceremonial lanterns. The deliberate positioning within and above a reflective water body amplifies the installation's visual impact through doubling while connecting the work to venerable garden design principles where architecture and aquatic surfaces engage in perpetual dialogue. Technical accomplishment is evident in the seamless integration of electrical systems within bamboo members, the waterproofing of illumination elements, and the structural calculations enabling such ambitious cantilevered forms. One might contemplate how this pavilion proposes architecture as temporal celebration, structures designed for meaningful duration rather than permanence, offering visitors transformative spatial experiences that honor material traditions while embracing contemporary spectacular possibilities.

Unique Properties
Echoing with the theme of the International Horticultural Exposition 2024, 'Beautiful Life in the Park City,' the Hong Kong Pavilion design is a symphonic spatial representation of the city's attributes. The hub of space captures the essence of Hong Kong's urban fabric, mountain ridges, wetlands, the harbour front night views, the traditional bamboo scaffolding techniques, and the geographical context that define this region.
Dimensions & Packaging
The entire site area is approximately 1,500m2. The main supporting structure of Pavilion is made of bamboo steel, a new engineered construction material.

Production Technology
The major material used for the Pavilion structure is an engineered bamboo locally sourced in Chengdu, a pioneering low-carbon material, in collaboration with Sichuan Provincial Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. to promote carbon-neutral building practices. The bamboo scaffolding techniques of Hong Kong, which is one of the intangible cultural heritage, is adopted to create a light-weighted form of the mass.
Design Challenge
Traditional bamboo used for scaffolding are less durable and vulnerable to strong wind and erosion. The locally sourced Bamboo Steel enhances construction timelines and supports carbon neutrality goals. It reduces carbon emissions, requires minimal maintenance, and absorbs carbon dioxide and pollutants. Its ease of disassembly, adaptability to various climates, resistance to deformation in humid conditions, and high resilience to impact loads make it an ideal choice for building outdoor structures, ensuring superior seismic resistance and structural integrity.
Project Duration
26/04/2024-28/10/2024, Chengdu, Sichuan, China
Operation Flow
The Pavilion is designed to blend in with its surrounding gardens and meandering pathways that invite visitors to explore and discover the multi-faceted beauty of Hong Kong. Vibrant colours and distinct form of plant species are selected to provide an enriched rambling experience and visual appreciation along the pathways. Diversified themes, including the butterfly garden, edible garden and wetland garden, are introduced to symbolize the biodiversity of Hong Kong habitats.
Research
The engineered Bamboo Steel is an advanced composite material derived from bamboo, originating from Sichuan, China. This innovative material utilizes pure natural bamboo, which is bonded with eco-friendly phenolic resin along the fibre directions through hot or cold pressing techniques. It exhibits steel-like hardness, exceptional strength, low carbon footprint, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, it boasts high resistance to weather conditions, flame retardancy, air purification properties, and an extended lifespan performances.
Inspiration
Inspired by the famous sceneries and cultural elements of Hong Kong, the Pavilion showcases the silhouette of Lion Rock Mountain ridges and bamboo scaffolding techniques. The shallow pool and boat sculptures represent the views of Victoria Harbour. The planting arrangements are coordinated according to the ecological characteristics of local habitats in various districts of Hong Kong. Bird cages with seats and neon light street signage are also added along the pathways to engage the visitors.
