About Gong Bar Cabinet

Gong is a bar cabinet designed for residential interiors. Two sliding doors are made of handmade palisander wood marquetry. The doors open to reveal three wooden shelves, dimmable lighting and a mirrored back panel. A tempered glass shelf at the base acts as a structural element that improves stability and adds storage space. The structure and the handles are made of solid brass profiles, oxidized to a medium bronze finish. The cabinet takes its name and its inspiration from the gong, a traditional symbol of wealth and strength in Far East culture.

Within the distinguished lineage of furniture conceived as sculptural statement, Eva Szumilas's Gong Bar Cabinet emerges as a meditation on the dialogue between geometric absolutes and organic warmth, drawing upon centuries of design heritage while articulating a distinctly contemporary sensibility. The work's fundamental concept, a circular cabinet suspended within a rectilinear frame, evokes the ceremonial gong stands of various Asian traditions, transforming a functional piece of domestic furniture into an object carrying ritual resonance and contemplative presence. Szumilas demonstrates remarkable technical sophistication in the execution of the radial veneer pattern, where individual wood segments have been precisely cut and joined to create seamless rays emanating from a central brass medallion, a technique requiring both mathematical precision and material sensitivity. The chromatic relationship between the antiqued brass framework and the deep-toned wood establishes a conversation between the mineralogical and the arboreal, between processed metal and figured timber, that speaks to enduring human practices of material transformation and refinement. One observes in the proportional relationships a careful attention to classical harmonic principles, with the circular form appearing to sit at the golden mean of the frame's height, creating visual equilibrium that feels inevitable rather than imposed. The piece participates in a tradition extending from Art Deco's celebration of geometric form and luxurious materials through mid-century modern's exploration of sculptural furniture, while its ceremonial references connect to broader design movements incorporating Eastern philosophical concepts of balance and centered presence. The lower glass shelf introduces functional practicality without disrupting aesthetic integrity, demonstrating the designer's understanding that the finest functional objects must serve both practical necessity and spiritual nourishment. Viewers might contemplate how this work transforms the quotidian ritual of accessing beverages into a moment of aesthetic engagement, how the act of opening these doors becomes a participation in the object's symbolic resonance.
