About Primary Residence Type Design

Primary Residence is a typeface design that turns minimal architectural forms into letters and numbers, using the three primary colors red, blue and yellow. Each character shows a small part of a building, without a clear entry or exit. Stairs, windows and geometric shapes refer to the Bauhaus movement and to minimalist architecture. The design was also informed by stairs and windows observed in different parts of the world. The sketches were made on paper, based on photographs of real buildings. The aim is to blend the form and the identity of the structure.

Tianzhen Evleen Huang's Primary Residence Type Design represents a remarkable achievement in contemporary typographic illustration that synthesizes architectural visualization with letterform design in a manner that evokes the pedagogical spirit of early twentieth-century design education while establishing an entirely fresh visual vocabulary for the present era. The work demonstrates exceptional conceptual rigor in its systematic transformation of the complete alphanumeric character set into architectural diagrams, where each letter and number serves simultaneously as readable text and as a speculative elevation or section drawing of inhabitable space. The restricted chromatic palette of primary colors against a warm neutral ground establishes immediate visual cohesion while referencing the color theories that informed geometric abstraction movements of the previous century. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precise balance maintained between typographic legibility and architectural complexity, ensuring that neither function overwhelms the other. The integration of domestic architectural elements including staircases, railings, balconies, and fenestration patterns invites contemplation of the spaces we inhabit and how their fundamental structural components might be reconceived through the lens of graphic form. Each character rewards individual examination while contributing to a unified system that suggests both the rationalist aspirations of modernist design and a more playful contemporary sensibility. Viewers are invited to consider which letter might serve as their own dwelling and what such habitation might reveal about the relationship between language and lived space.

Unique Properties
Primary Residence is an alphabet design that represents minimal architectural forms in typography with three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow.
Each letter and number represents a small part of the buildings without any apparent entry or existence. You may look at it with your own imagination to find the way in or out. You could even find connections from one character to the next.
The stairs, windows, and geometric shapes are dedicated to the Bauhaus architectural style and minimalism, with the primary goal of blending the form and identities of the structure together.
Dimensions & Packaging
When the letter designs are applied to products, each one of them is given a unique identifying number.

Production Technology
Started the sketches on paper, based on real architecture photography.
Design Challenge
The challenge of this project is finding ways to incorporate different elements of architectural forms with letters while making them look consistent and abstract.
Project Duration
This project started in March 2020 in New Jersey.
Operation Flow
This archetype style helps the viewer gain a greater appreciation of the abstract building. The stairs, windows, all geometric shapes all dedicated to Bauhaus architecture and Minimalist building to blend with the form and identity of the structure.
Research
Each main element of the letter based on the research of the Bauhaus movement or the world architectures' photography.
Inspiration
The inspiration originally came from the Bauhaus Movement. Additionally, I was inspired by the design of stairs and windows from different parts of the world, like the fire escapes of old buildings in New York City and urban windows in European cities.
